After spend the last two months destroying The Rock's popularity, Vince McMahon vowed Monday night in a post-Raw press conference to now begin rebuilding him.
"It's a policy of ours to try to knock anyone's ego down a few notches and humble them, then rebuild them so we can take credit for their resurgence," McMahon told a throng of reporters in the media area after Raw at Philips Arena in Atlanta last night.
"I assured our stockholders that we would be able to blindside and trick Rock into completely destroying his bond with fans and move his massive popularity to a level more in line with John Cena," said McMahon. "We assured them that this was good for business because while Rock wrestling for us again is a tremendous boost, using Rock to build up our full-time star John Cena, who is committed to this company 365 days a year, was more important."
McMahon added: "Frankly, we were prepared for a smarter Dwayne Johnson. We thought it would be tougher. We thought he'd put up more of a fight. Pull out the veto pen. But really, we could throw anything out there and just accepted it. I think he might have actually trusted us implicitly, thinking why would we hurt him when it hurt us. He's clearly been away from the pro wrestling industry for a while."
John Cena entered the press conference room and smiled as he sat down. He motioned as if wiping sweat from his brow, then said, "It feels good to be more popular than The Rock. We had schemed that it would take until WrestleMania 28 itself to pull this off, but we pulled it off tonight. I'd just like to welcome all of Rock's fans into Cena Nation. We're here for you ever week, The Rock is not. Did I make that clear?"
The Rock was not available to speak to reporters. Apparently doctors were waving smelling salt under his nose and he was last overhead saying, "What happened out there? I don't remember anything."
When asked about Rock's condition, McMahon said that Rock is shell-shocked. He has watched his popularity plummet in recent weeks and he's just not quite sure how to fully absorb what he's been through. "We were on our A-game the last six weeks. The resources behind the scenes that went into undercutting The Rock and making him look like a shallow, mean-spirited, judgmental, self-centered, one-trick pony was astounding. I'd like to thank Triple H, of course John Cena, Brian Gewirtz, and even Pat Patterson, without whom this wouldn't have been possible. Rock trusted Pat implicitly, and not since we got Earl Hebner to violate Bret Hart's trust in him have we backstabbed someone and possibly ruined a friendship for the greater good of showing everyone who really is boss."
Cena leaned over and high-five McMahon.
A reporter asked how McMahon can rebuild Rock into a draw in time for him to be deemed a worthy WrestleMania opponent for Cena next year.
"It won't be easy," said McMahon. "Like I said, this all happened much quicker than we anticipated. We believe if we turn all of our efforts into building Rock up instead of tearing him down, we can do it."
A reporter asked Cena what manipulation he is most proud of that Rock obliviously took part in.
"Oh, without a doubt it was tonight when Rock let me pause before shaking HIS hand and when Rock let me issue the challenge for a match," Cena said. "Of course, it was originally proposed to be the other way around, with me begging him to shake my hand, and him issuing the challenge for a match. At the last second, we proposed we flip that around. We really didn't think he'd say yes, but here's where Pat really helped. Rock went along with our explanation, even though it was full of holes. Rock just didn't seem on his game. He thought he had his guard up, but we practice head games every week and Rock came in rusty and overconfident. That will do you in every time."
