Live Raw on USA Network

Raw opened with Corporate Kane on a conference line in The Authority office. Stephanie McMahon and Triple H were on the phone. They noted they're going to be late for Raw after dealing with a terrible day, drawing a big smile from Kane as he was informed he's in-charge tonight. Steph was yelling at someone off-line as Hunter tried to give Kane instructions for the night. They hung up, then Kane brought in a backstage worker. He told her that he's booking himself in a lumberjack match against WWE World Hvt. champion Seth Rollins tonight.

Live in the arena, WWE played Dean Ambrose's music to try to energize the show right at the start. Ambrose marched down to the ring as the announcers talked about Seth-Kane issues already in-play tonight.

In the ring, Ambrose said he has some good news. The rumor is The Authority is running late tonight. He yelled at Hunter for being late, then noted the inmates are running the asylum. Ambrose welcomed everyone to "Monday Night Raw!" then said he's looking for a fight tonight. Suddenly, Randy Orton's music played.

Orton marched down tot he ring to address Ambrose. Orton noted he's from St. Louis, but he loves Chicago. (Playoffs match-up happening right now in Chicago.) Orton said he's in a great mood tonight because he's driving home after Raw to sleep in his own bed. And, he also heard that they're facing Luke Harper and Braun Strowman at Hell in a Cell in two weeks. Orton wanted to talk about how to win this fight, but Dean cut him off. He said the line to take down the Wyatts starts with him.

Orton paused and said Dean is a talented guy, but years ago when he was dreaming about becoming a WWE star, he was already hearing voices in his head. Orton said everyone knows they don't play nice with others, but if there is one person he can see eye-to-eye with, then Dean is the guy. Orton told Dean that if they want to end the Wyatts, then Dean needs to follow his lead.

Dean and Orton went back and forth on not trusting each other. And not getting along. And having trust issues. Suddenly, the voice of New Day's Big E. interrupted. Big E., Xavier Woods, and Kofi Kingston came out dancing and jumping around. Xavier bragged about destroying folks last week. Kofi said they're talking too much about what is not important and not talking enough about the New Day. The trio then ran down the list of guys they took out last week.

Dean and Orton sold boredom in the ring, so New Day tried to get Ambrose's attention by saying The Shield never did what they did. And, Orton never did what they did in The Authority, The Legacy, or Evolution. Dang, Randy, how many groups have you been in?, they asked.

Suddenly, Corporate Kane appeared on the Videotron. Kane was in super-corporate mode talking about there appearing to be confusion in the ring. He said the innmates are not running the asylum tonight - he is. At least until Hunter and Steph get to Raw. He requested a referee out there to see if New Day can prove they're the best group in WWE right now.

[ Reax: Another long, drawn-out opening talking segment. Ambrose and Orton don't trust each other, New Day went through a few pages of material that eventually lost the audience, and the presiding authority figure booked a tag match to have the issues to play out in the ring. So predictable and trite and what makes Raw and Smackdown feel so dry. ]

[Q2]

1 -- WWE tag champions NEW DAY (BIG E. & KOFI KINGSTON w/Xavier Woods) vs. DEAN AMBROSE & RANDY ORTON -- non-title match

The faces cleared New Day from the ring in the opening minute, sending Raw to a break.

[Commercial Break at 8:17]

Back from break, the story was Orton and Dean working together to wear down New Day. But, they started to argue a little bit, only to work together to clear New Day from the ring again. They cut to another break.

[Commercial Break at 8:23]

Back from break, New Day was in control... and Xavier was on the trombone. Big E. did too much dancing, though, and airballed a splash that sent him flying to the outside. The opening allowed Orton to crawl across the ring and tag in Ambrose. Ambrose teed off on Big E. with a corner attack and running bulldog before splashing Kofi on the outside. Dean then low-bridged a charging Big E. Dean followed with a suicide dive to Big E. and Kofi on the floor, firing up the crowd.

[Q3] Back in the ring, Dean hit a top-rope elbow on Big E. for a two count. But, Big E. cut off Dean with a belly-to-belly suplex. Dean managed to make it to his corner, bringing in Orton with rapid-fire offense. Orton planted Kofi with a signature second-rope DDT, then he called for an RKO. But, Kofi pushed Orton away and Orton crashed into Ambrose, who was trying to take out Big E. This allowed Kofi to roll up Orton from behind for a surprise three count and the win.

Post-match, Ambrose returned to the ring to collect himself with Orton as New Day danced and sang on the stage.

WINNERS: New Day at 17:52.

Authority's Office: Kane was standing by waiting for the conference phone to ring.

Still to come: Roman Reigns vs. Braun Strowman.

Up Next: Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker Hell in a Cell preview.

[Commercial Break at 8:35]

Video Package: Brock Lesnar broke The Streak, Undertaker "controversially" won the re-match, and now they meet in Hell in a Cell to settle the current feud.

In-ring: Team Bellas was introduced to the ring for the next match. Michael Cole said that Nikki Bella is in singles action next against ... fellow heel, Naomi.

[Commercial Break at 8:43] [...Q4]

[Q4...] Back from break, Naomi was standing by in the ring preparing to face Nikki. But, the focus shifted to Sasha Banks. Instead of a match starting, the Divas had to sit and wait for a while as WWE cut to a video package on the Bayley vs. Sasha Iron Man match from last week's NXT: Takeover special. They came back to ringside and Sasha was smiling after the video review. Why would she be smiling after she just watched tape on a match she lost? This little thing captured so much of what's wrong with WWE's approach to their product.

2 -- NIKKI BELLA (w/Brie Bella and Alicia Fox) vs. NAOMI (w/Sasha Banks and Tamina)

Nikki dominated early on, then walked into a flying dropkick from Naomi. Nikki recovered on the floor, then Brie Bella suddenly decided to stand up on the announce table and yell into the mic. This brought over Sasha to drop her to the floor. But, the distraction allowed Nikki to roll up Naomi from behind for a surprise win before Team B.A.D. could do anything about it.

WINNER: Nikki at 4:58. This was designed to give Nikki a win before facing Charlotte for the Divas Title at Hell in a Cell. There just wasn't much of a connection to the PPV match.

Still to Come: Seth Rollins vs. Kane in a lumberjack match. A "Payday" logo appeared on the screen.

Up Next: John Cena's U.S. Title Open Challenge.

[Commercial Break at 8:55]

Back from break, Cole tried to get Byron Saxton on the show.

Earlier Today: Saxton walked around asking fans who they think the most unconventional WWE star is. Dean Ambrose and Paige were the favorites.

Backstage: Saxton was away from the announce table to talk to Paige, who sarcastically thanked the audience for appreciating her. Paige got fresh with Saxton, then pulled out a Payday bar from Saxton's coat pocket and walked away.

[Q5 -- Second Hour] Saxton was back at the announce table to react to his paid sponsorship interview. John Cena's music then played to bring out Cena to loud boos in Chicago. Cena stormed the ring, then looked around the arena. Subdued reaction that Cena milked to try to make it seem like it was a huge reaction. Cena said some locations will claim to be the World's Most Famous Arena, but there is only one Allstate Arena.

So, what makes this place special? He had his very first WWE match here. Then, been part of historic matches here. But, what makes this building special are the people who fill the arena. He gave them a ra-ra speech about getting excellence and opportunity tonight. Cena added that regardless of public opinion, John Cena is the man to beat. He opened the floor for the Open Challenge.

After a pause, Dolph Ziggler's music played. New Day did not ambush him on the way to the ring. Ziggler emerged on-stage ready to wrestle and pounded his chest ready for the challenge. As Ziggler made his way to the ring, Cole teased Ziggler having relationship issues, which they will break down later in the show.

3 -- U.S. champion JOHN CENA vs. DOLPH ZIGGLER -- United States Title match

As the match started, Cole and JBL wondered how much Cena will be affected by traveling overseas to wrestle in Saudi Arabia over the weekend. JBL equated it to wrestling in Japan, then returning home. Cena and Ziggler went back and forth, then the crowd suddenly turned to the back of the arena shouting "Yes!" Cena picked up on it and grabbed a mic after knocking Ziggler out of the ring. Cena said they make history in this building and apparently there's been a marriage accepted. "Well done, good sir!" Cena shouted to the fan, who smooched his girlfriend-turned-fiancee.

The match continued with the crowd doing the New Day Rocks beat to "She ... Said Yes," prompting Cena to pause and salute the fan again. Cena and Ziggler went back to wrestling heading to a mid-match break.

[Commercial Break at 9:10]

Back from break, Ziggler was trying to put Cena to sleep. Ziggler transitioned to ten consecutive elbow drops. Cena came right back with the STF, though, as the announcers mentioned Kurt Angle's name on the air in reference to Cena's first WWE TV match in this building. Ziggler then reversed the STF into a sleeperhold, but Cena powered to his feet to break the hold.

[Q6] Cena nailed the AA, which sent Ziggler rolling out of the ring to the outside. Instead of getting out of Chicago with a count-out win, Cena decided to pick up Ziggler and roll him back into the ring, which resulted in a two count. Cena then hoisted Ziggler onto the top turnbuckle and went for a Super AA, but Ziggler fought out and nailed a Super DDT for a two count.

Reset at 11:00. Cena went for an AA standing on his feet, but Ziggler counted in mid-air with a Fameasser. Cover, but only a two count for Ziggler. JBL said he thinks Dolph is winning tonight, which of course meant he's not. Ziggler came to his feet swinging wildly, opening himself up for Cena to drop him to the mat with the STF. Ziggler escaped via rope break, though.

They reset again. Cena caught Ziggler for an AA, but Ziggler suddenly eye-raked Cena to escape. Ziggler smashed Cena with a superkick, but Cena kicked out just before three. JBL equated it to this week's sports controversy of Chase Utley sliding in hard to Second Base doing whatever it takes to win in a Playoffs environment. Suddenly, Ziggler surprised Cena with the Zig-Zag after landing a headbutt. But, Cena kicked out just before three again.

Ziggler sold not knowing what to do next. He stood up and walked right into the AA from a desperate Cena. Cena covered and scored a three count for the win. Today's Math Equation = one fireman's carry AA drop > Superkick, Super DDT, and Zig-Zag.

Post-match, Ziggler recovered in the corner selling disbelief. Cena stood up and stood over Ziggler to close the match segment, as WWE abruptly cut away before letting the dust completely settle.

WINNER: Cena at 17:40 to retain the U.S. Title. Another very good TV match in the U.S. Title Series. Heel Ziggler resurfacing was interesting - the character needs to be refreshed, as Ziggler feels stale after going through the Lana/Summer Rae/Rusev business and regularly losing matches.

Backstage: Kane was watching the show and waiting for The Authority's phone call. Triple H conveniently buzzed in right after the match ended. Hunter asked how the show is going while Steph yelled at someone in the background. Hunter said he'll call Kane back in a second. Kane smiled and went back to his coffee. The idea being that Hunter & Steph are still unaware of Kane booking himself against Seth Rollins tonight.

[Commercial Break at 9:27]

[Q7] In-ring: The Dudleys were shown marching down to the ring back from break. The Ascension was already in the ring ready to pick a fight.

4 -- THE DUDLEYS (BUBBA RAY & DEVON) vs. THE ASCENSION (KONNOR & VIKTOR)

Devon took an initial beating, then Bubba hot-tagged and talked trash in-between smashing Konnor. Bubba caught Konnor in the corner, then tagged in Devon for a Doomsday Device in Chicago. Konnor also took the 3D and a pin was secured for the decisive win.

WINNER: Dudleys at 2:43. Fine squash in the comedown match getting the Dudleys ready for New Day at Hell in a Cell.

Still to come: Seth Rollins vs. Kane in the Payday match.

[Commercial Break at 9:35]

Back from break, all of the Europeans were assembled in the ring. This week, WWE added Cesaro to the mix of Neville, Sheamus, and Barrett.

5 -- NEVILLE & CESARO vs. MITB holder SHEAMUS & BAD NEWS BARRETT

Early on, the focus was on Cesaro and Neville working well together as a tag team. The heels gained control, though, and wore down Cesaro. Neville eventually tagged in, but chaos broke out. In the chaos, Barrett smashed Neville with a Bullhammer from the outside. Cesaro chased Barrett around ringside, but Sheamus pinned Neville for a three count.

WINNERS: Sheamus & Barrett 3:48. Something was just a little off; like they were going too fast trying to pack this match into four minutes.

Video Package: Braun Strowman, who faces Roman Reigns later tonight.

Up Next: It's Reigns vs. Strowman.

[Q8] [Commercial Break at 9:45]

In-ring: Roman Reigns marched through the crowd down to the ring. Before facing Strowman, Reigns wanted to talk. Reigns recapped his feud with the Wyatts going back to when Bray Wyatt knocked him out of the WWE Title picture at Money in the Bank. Reigns said it turned into family vs. family, and he and Dean Ambrose beat The Wyatts at Summerslam. Then, the war got bigger. And some weeks he got it handed to him.

But, what really irritates him is this "anyone but you" mantra from Wyatt. Reigns paused for a "boring" chant. No, Chicago, he said this is real-life, because as a man, Bray is trying to stop everything he has going for him. Reigns talked about doing this for his family, which the crowd didn't bite on. He tried to help the audience imagine what they would do if someone tried to get after their family. Not much of a reaction. Reigns vowed to rip Bray apart at Hell in a Cell.

Suddenly, Bray Wyatt's music interrupted. From the stage, Bray responded to Reigns's speech, warning him about his tough talk heading into Hell in a Cell. Reigns responded that Bray is going to wish he was facing anyone else but him at Hell in a Cell. Bray shook that off, then whispered instructions to Braun Strowman. Braun started walking down to the ring heading to break.

[ Reax: Roman Reigns just does not have it on the mic for the position he's been placed in. His speeches sound disconnected from real emotion or thoughts, and the crowd can see through it. It comes across like he's reciting lines written by someone else that he hasn't translated into his own voice. ]

[Commercial Break at 9:56]

This Thursday on Smackdown: New Day vs. Dudleys & Dean Ambrose in a six-man tag match.

[Q9 -- Third Hour]

6 -- ROMAN REIGNS vs. BRAUN STROWMAN (w/Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper)

The two big men came face-to-face and squared off before Braun knocked down Reigns. Braun followed with a bodyslam taking down Reigns. Braun slowly walked around the ring before taunting him. Reigns sold having stomach cramps, then Braun put Reigns in a neck vice. Reigns tried to come back with a bodyslam, but Strowman blocked and pounded Reigns back down to the mat. JBL said that might be Reigns's last offensive attempt of the night. Which, of course, meant it would not be.

Reigns finally trapped Strowman in the ropes and found an opening to nail his running two-foot dropkick from the outside. Reigns tried a second time, but Strowman smashed him with a clothesline. Strowman and Reigns then fought on the outside. Reigns smashed Strowman into the announce table, then he ran across the ring to smash Harper with a Superman Punch. He followed with another Superman Punch sending Strowman flying over the announce table. Reigns returned to the ring and scored a count-out win.

Post-match, Bray Wyatt re-organized the troops as Reigns recovered in the ring. Bray charged the ring, Harper and Strowman ran in behind Bray, and Reigns slid out of the ring. Reigns cockily walked away from ringside not wanting to fight the trio. Bray invited Reigns back into the ring, but Reigns remained on the outside. So, Bray knelt down near the ropes opening the door for Reigns. Instead, Reigns reached through the ropes with a punch to Wyatt, surprising Bray. Reigns left the ringside area as the Wyatts recovered in the ring.

WINNER: Reigns via count-out at 7:50. Is Reigns turning heel? That was a weird babyface presentation if not. Everything was justifiable - Reigns got a count-out win instead of continuing to fight Strowman on the outside, he avoided a three-on-one situation by leaving the ring, and he punched Bray when Bray invited him to do something, but on the other hand, it looked like Reigns getting a cheap win (compare to Cena in the same spot earlier tonight), Reigns running away from a fight, and Reigns sucker-punching Bray instead of returning to the ring to fight. Combine that with the pre-match promo and Reigns's character is just in a weird spot right now.

Authority's Office: Triple H conveniently buzzed in right after Reigns's match. He has pretty good timing for not being able to see the show. Hunter said they're heading Kane's way. The phone connection broke up. WWE can't get The Authority working phones? Hunter asked what Kane's main event is tonight. Kane broke it down for Hunter, who did not hear him because of the connection. Hunter eventually hung up.

[Commercial Break at 10:12]

[Q10] Back from break, Rusev was in the ring. Cole went back to last week when Summer Rae proposed to Rusev, who said he would say yes when he gets gold. Back on Raw, Cole said this is strange because TMZ reported that Rusev is engaged to Lana. But, Summer Rae was still ringside. The announcers tried to play this off as Rusev trying to have two women because he's from another country.

Ryback, the recent IC champion who challenges for the title at HIAC, was already in the ring with an enhancement talent entrance. This is a big singles match presented as a comedown match.

7 -- RYBACK vs. RUSEV (w/Summer Rae)

The announcers continued to try to figure out the Rusev/Lana/Summer issue, wondering if Summer wasn't on TMZ over the weekend and doesn't know that Rusev is engaged to Lana. Meanwhile, lip service to Ryback challenging for the IC Title in two weeks. Ryback woke up the announcers with a Meathook Clothesline to Rusev. He wanted Shell-Shock, but Rusev escaped and tried to use the ropes to get a three count, but the ref saw it.

Rusev airballed a corner attack, then he walked right into Shell-Shock from Ryback. Ryback scored a three count for the win.

WINNER: Ryback at 3:05. Wow, Rusev has really fallen. But, WWE would argue he's become "more interesting" with the soap opera non-sense.

Post-match, Summer Rae approached Rusev to talk about their pending engagement. Summer said she could have done this in the back, but she wants the whole world to know what kind of a man Rusev really is. Summer flashed the TMZ story of Rusev and Lana engaged. Summer ran down Rusev, calling him a whipped, little boy. Summer thanked Rusev so much because she will never waste another minute of her time on him. Summer slapped Rusev, then left the ring. Rusev slowly turned around and started yelling jibberish as she high-tailed it to the back.

[ Reax: This felt like a rushed ending to the story, especially since Rusev and Summer both came across heelish. Now what for Rusev? He gets his edge back re-associating with Lana, who turned face before she got injured? ]

[Commercial Break at 10:24]

In-ring: Lucha Dragons were introduced to the ring for the next match. Out came IC champion Kevin Owens facing the other member of Lucha Dragons after discarding Sin Cara last week.

[Q11]

8 -- IC champion KEVIN OWENS vs. KALISTO (w/Sin Cara) -- non-title match

Owens over-powered Kalisto early on, then blocked Kalisto's attempted high-flying comeback. Owens shook off a few kicks from Kalisto, then nailed a powerbomb for the pin and the win. Afterward, Owens retrieved the title and held it up in the announcers's faces. Owens left the ring as WWE replayed the decisive powerbomb.

WINNER: Owens at 3:48. Overall, it's been a rapid-fire series of matches for the past hour or so. Just not a lot of effort into establishing the importance to the matches.

Still to come: Rollins vs. Kane lumberjack match.

[Commercial Break at 10:34]

Back from break, Brie Bella and Alicia Fox were back out in the ring. Charlotte and Becky Lynch were also out there in the ring. And, Nikki Bella was pacing ringside and Paige was on commentary acting cocky. WWE quickly tried to hype Charlotte vs. Nikki at Hell in a Cell before the bell sounded on a tag match.

9 -- Divas champion CHARLOTTE & BECKY LYNCH vs. BRIE BELLA & ALICIA FOX (w/Nikki Bella)

Paige downplayed Charlotte and Becky forming a new team with Natalya, saying Natalya is just trying to steal her girls. The two teams traded control until Charlotte knocked down Brie and tried the Figure Eight, but Brie blocked and neatly scored a roll-up. Suddenly, Natalya showed up and picked a fight with Paige at ringside. Chaos broke out, Nikki cheap-shotted Charlotte from the ring apron, and Charlotte stumbled into a pin from Brie.

WINNERS: Brie & Fox at 3:05. Same old WWE booking where the champ is made to look vulnerable by losing on TV. That's why Becky is there to take the loss, not make a fresh, new act look like a loser.

Backstage: Triple H was on the phone with Kane. Hunter said it's not looking good for them to make it to Raw. Hunter asked Kane who Seth is facing tonight. Kane said it's him. Steph flipped out, then Hunter told Kane to be a professional and send anyone else but him to the ring to face Seth. Kane said he understands and hung up. Kane smiled and walked off for transformation time.

[Q12] [Commercial Break at 10:45]

Backstage: WWE World Hvt. champion Seth Rollins was standing by with Big Show. Rollins tried to get him on his side in the main event when it seems like nothing is going right for him. Show laughed and said he has a great sense of humor. Kane then walked in. "What do you want?!" Kane shouted. Kane gave him good news that he will not be Seth's opponent tonight. But, he will find a suitable replacement.

Announcers: Cole, JBL, and Saxton were shown on-camera reacting to the news from Kane. Cole and Co. then hyped Hell in a Cell in two weeks, specifically Brock vs. Taker. This led to a video package on the feud - the same one that aired earlier in the show.

Back live, Big Show led out a series of lumberjacks down to the ring. Lots of heels, including New Day walking right on top of Show. Plus, The Dudleys, Rusev smiling or grimacing, Jack Swagger, and more folks.

[Commercial Break at 10:55]

Coming back from break, WWE quickly plugged The Undertaker, Brock Lesnar, Ric Flair, and Shawn Michaels appearing on next week's Raw. That was very light hype for a ton of big names appearing on the same show.

WWE immediately went back to the arena for Seth Rollins's ring introduction. Meanwhile, Cole plugged Rollins appearing on ESPN SportsCenter on Tuesday night. Rollins will be interviewed by The Coach.

After a pause, Kane's pyro shot off. Out came Big Red Machine Kane as Rollins's opponent.

[Q13 -- over-run]

10 -- WWE World Hvt. champion SETH ROLLINS vs. BIG RED KANE -- non-title Lumberjack match

Rollins tried to run away, but he was tossed back into the ring to take punishment from Kane. Seth eventually bailed from the ring and tried to run out of the crowd, but the lumberjacks tracked down Seth and threw him back into the ring. Kane teased a chokeslam, but Seth kicked Kane and clotheslined him out of the ring to the floor.

On the floor, Big Red Kane teed off on New Day, then went face-to-face with Big Show. Kane uppercut him, too, then took out The Ascension. But, Big Show KO Punched Kane. Show decided to leave ringside as Seth sold being shocked by his good luck. New Day then picked up Kane and rolled him back into the ring. Seth quickly covered Kane, but only got a two count.

The match continued with Xavier Woods extolling Seth's virtues as The Future of WWE. Seth then climbed to the top rope and nailed a Frogsplash. But, Kane kicked out again. First Show's finisher and now Eddie's. Suddenly, New Day decided to yank Kane out of the ring and attack him, causing chaos to break out among the lumberjacks. The lumberjacks then took the fight into the ring, beating down Kane with kicks and strikes.

New Day settled things down, then Big E. removed his ring jacket and went for a big splash, but Kane sat up and attacked New Day. More chaos in the ring. The chaos spilled out of the ring, then Kane chokeslammed Stardust and Xavier Woods. It was down to Seth and Kane. Seth tried the Pedigree, but Kane avoided and hit a Tombstone. Kane covered Seth for the pin and the win.

WINNER: Kane at 8:21. Well, they continue to try to make Kane seem like a viable threat to Seth's WWE Title at the PPV. Just not sure people are buying it unless they're brand-new WWE TV viewers. On the other side, more reinforcement of Seth as a weak champion unable to get the job done with help from New Day, Big Show, The Ascension, and every other heel on the roster beating down Kane. Why would anyone take the champ seriously? There has to be a level of credibility for the champ and then play up the heel characteristics that makes people want to see him get his comeuppance, but if WWE constantly takes away any credibility, the audience loses interest. It's been the same thing for six months.

Post-match, fans started filing out of the building as Kane shot off pyro in the ring. The announcers talked about Kane being the new WWE Champion if the same thing happens in two weeks. Raw ended with Kane standing tall ten minutes past the top of the hour.
