C.M. Punk is already accepting bookings starting in August for various indy promotions. He is going to be wrestling under the name Punk M.C., citing the precedent by WWE to rename Bryan Danielson "Daniel Bryan."
"I considered 'See 'Emp Unk' also, inspired by the great indy success of U-Gene and Kev Inash, but I decided rather than attempt to skirt copyright hurdles with the tried and true 'Phonetic Workaround,' I'd to go with the approach my trusted friend Brian took, known on the Indy scene as the 'Sneaky Switcheroo,'" Punk tells The Potato in this inclusive interview. "I also considered just going by the name 'Punk,' inspired by Christopher Daniels going by just 'Daniels,' but that hasn't worked out well for him."
Punk said he also considered 1-2-3 Punk, Kamikaze Punk, Lightning Punk, X-Punk as a shout-out to his friend Sean Waltman, but he felt the joke was even too inside for his followers.
"I even looked into copyrighting 'C.M. Punk Cage,' since Christian became Christian Cage to skirt around WWE owning 'Christian,' but my lawyer said I had to prove I had used that name on the Indy scene before working for WWE. I didn't.
"I also considered going by Mystico, but that was taken, apparently. And I gave serious consideration to C.M. Grung, C.M. Heavy Metal, C.M. Country, C.M. Soft Jazz, C.M. Synth Pop, and came very close to settling on C.M. Brit Pop. Again, I felt the joke was a little subtle to help me draw for promoters on the indy scene, but my lawyers said that'd be okay."
Unfortunately, Punk must bleach his hair and spike it, similar to Shannon Moore, because WWE owns every other look he had - the long hair, the super short hair, the bald look, the parted on the side "Mad Men" look, and even the slicked back awkward-growing-it-out-stage look, since he appeared on WWE TV with all of those hairstyles.
"Believe it or not, P.M. Cunt was taken, as that was my first choice. I felt just switching two letters around would be enough to satisfy WWE lawyers while still being familiar to my fans, but I wanted to build a website around my name, and that name was taken. So Punk M.C. it is!"
