The night after WWE's Royal Rumble PPV, Kofi Kingston was unable to sleep. There was something bugging him. “I just couldn't get that image out of my head,” he told The Potato in an exclusive interview. “He was standing right there, up near the WrestleMania sign!”
Reviewing the Royal Rumble footage, Kofi does at one point seem to be entranced by something up near the WrestleMania sign: a sign that shines boldly wherever WWE take their live shows. Kofi stares up to the roof meaningfully, and then points in the sign's general direction.
“I was pointing right at him! It was Sting! Sting was up in those rafters, near the Mania sign!”
But Kofi was mystified that nobody else saw the cloaked figure of Sting, a wrestler famous for lurking up in the rafters of wrestling's greatest venues. “I pointed right at him, but nobody noticed – they all thought I was pointing at something else, perhaps.”
Kofi isn't the only man to have seen this vision of The Man Called Sting. Alberto Del Rio remembers the night he won the Rumble clearly: “I had just done the spot where I threw Santino over the top rope, and I began to celebrate as the Rumble winner,” Del Rio recalled in a recent conversation. “Suddenly, I saw Sting, right up towards the ceiling, near the WrestleMania sign! Naturally I pointed to try and attract everyone's attention, but nobody seemed to get the message.”
Over the past few weeks, many WWE superstars have appeared entranced as they look up, often pointing, towards the roof, at the Stinger. HHH and Undertaker both saw him at the same time. “I remember we were doing the part where HHH comes down to challenge me – the crowd were going wild during our staredown,” Undertaker said. “Suddenly, he looks away from me, up towards the rafters, near the WrestleMania sign. Naturally, I looked too... and I saw exactly what he saw: Sting was right there, looking down on us.”
“I've heard a lot of guys in the back talking about it,”said HHH, “How they all desperately try to point Sting out whenever they see him up there – but nobody seems to notice. It's like the management think we're pointing at something else, or something. Cena's seen him, Orton's seen him, but nobody looks in the right place when we try to point him out. It's really frustrating.”
It's currently a mystery as to why Sting, an employee of TNA, is appearing in the rafters at WWE shows. WWE executives made clear on the phone that there was no storyline involving Sting in progress, nor would there be. This implies that his appearances are entirely unscripted. What is known is that he mainly decides to show himself when a WWE superstar is making a challenge for a WrestleMania match, or when a superstar is talking about going to WrestleMania.
Vince McMahon commented: “Yes, I've heard that a lot of the talent have been distracted by the roof, lately: staring at it; pointing at it. But this kind of thing seems to happen every year around this season. Damned if I know why.”
