WK QUICK BLOG: WWE should consider taking Smackdown live on Tuesdays

Should WWE and SyFy move Smackdown to Tuesdays and go live every week? PWTorch readers, by a huge margin, support the move. In fact, 76 percent of poll respondents said they'd watch Smackdown more often if it were live on Tuesdays. All but 8 percent said being live was a plus, and the majority said the day of week was a plus for them (Tuesday instead of Friday).
I like this idea. Yes, it would mean back-to-back nights of WWE wrestling instead of spreading them out during the week. But that doesn't seem to hurt the NFL, which has Sunday afternoon football, Sunday night football, and Monday night football. Then fans reflect and recharge for the next weekend games (with the new NFL Network Thursday games and late-season Saturday games being added to the mix).
One of the benefits would be instant synergy as Raw could promote "tomorrow night on Smackdown..."
Friday night is a weaker night for television viewership, so there's less pressure on WWE to delivery big numbers. But I think Tuesday would draw better ratings. Our poll isn't scientific, but it's hard to ignore those numbers - again, 76 percent say they'd watch more on Tuesdays.
If Smackdown were live and right after Raw, it wouldn't change WWE's schedule for the wrestlers or the writing team. It would put a different kind of pressure on the production crew as they'd have the immediacy of producing a live show rather than the luxury of filming Raw footage and piecing it together later.
The price of going live would be more as live satellite time costs money. Saving on post-production costs, though, could make up some of that.
In any case, I think the no. 1 thing it would do is give Smackdown a bigger audience on Tuesdays instead of Friday, and just as important, Vince McMahon would take it more seriously. Wrestlers often talk about the rush of knowing they're live, and I think that would increase the quality of the program in an intangible way. It would also eliminate the viewers who read spoilers and decide not to watch because it doesn't sound good to them.
What would not work is combining the rosters and going back to back on Mondays. Then it's essentially a four-hour show with the top tier wrestlers eating up all the TV time and getting overexposed, while the mid-card and future main event wrestlers are crowded out almost entirely. So a Monday-Tuesday schedule works only if you have to watch both nights to see all of WWE's top stars, which is what Vince McMahon told me was his primary motivation for the brand split when he commented to PWTorch Newsletter about the move back when he made the decision.
Here are the full results of our poll...
Yes, because it'd be live - 32%
Yes, because it'd be on Tuesday - 8%
Yes, because of both live and Tuesday - 36%
No, because Friday is a better day - 4%
I'll watch it the same no matter what day - 20%
