In just the first 60 minutes of Impact Wrestling on Spike TV last night, we heard these insults yelled at the top of various people's lungs:
-Low-life
-Con man
-Loser
-Scum of the earth
-Dirtbag
-Cancer
-Really Bad Virus
-Son of a Bitch (multiple times)
-Smart ass
-Fat Son of a Bitch
-Bitches
-Whore
-You suck
-Plus Steiner got bleeped
-And Eric Bischoff made a reference to his "taking a leak." Terrific.
(I suspect I missed one or two others.)
I'm not sure it's the most vile, angry, miserable hour of pro wrestling TV I've seen from TNA, but it's up there.
It's just way too heavy-handed. As much as people tune into wrestling to see some fighting and, yes, some promos, this first hour was just like fifth graders when the parents leave the room trying to impress each other with borderline swear words and filthy talk.
There are times the show seems like it's written by a sad, lonely, angry person in the afternoon in the seediest, darkest corner of the nastiest strip joint off of a highway outside of town. This hour felt like that. It's just undisciplined.
It's as if Vince Russo is still so upset at Time-Warner's "Standards & Practices" department keeping him from "saving WCW" that he wants to catch up by fitting as much filthy, nasty, angry content into each hour of Impact as he can. Russo told me five years ago when we recorded our "Ultimate Insiders DVD" interview in Los Angeles that he was handcuffed by S&P and it really killed off his chance to be successful with WCW. This type of hour shows that "Standards & Practices" were the level-headed adults in the situation back then.
There are more effective ways to draw a large 25-49 male viewership than this. This is a show that you can only watch alone in a room with the door closed if you have anyone else in the house.
And I just noted the verbal insults. I left off the close-ups of Bischoff's miserable angry face, the extreme close-up of the Knockouts crotches and boobs, and the general "Volume 11" level of top-of-their-lungs yelling by Bischoff, Sting, Scott Steiner, and Bully Ray during their promos.
If they're trying to be a contrast to WWE's PG rating, they're taking it too far. Way too far.
This show needs its writers to get some therapy and spare us their issues.
