As I said in my Raw Blog yesterday, the draft on Raw was without any major surprises once the John Cena swerve played out. Predictable isn't bad, though. The reason those predictions were made (Randy Orton to Smackdown, Sin Cara and Rey Mysterio swapping brands) was they seemed to be the most realistic and sound moves.
This year the Supplemental Draft may be more influential than ever since there weren't actually that many moves made in yesterday's two hour main draft show.
(1) Daniel Bryan to Smackdown is a good move. Smackdown is formatted for longer matches and it gives wrestlers a better chance to find out where they fit into the landscape. Let's see how the rest of today's draft shakes out before getting too deep into potential opponents for Bryan.
(2) Jack Swagger moving to Raw is also no surprise since he's linked with Michael Cole, although Cole is on both brands these days. It could open up Swagger for a feud with Cena this year if they build Swagger, although it seems Del Rio would be first in line. They could also turn Swagger babyface and feud him with The Miz, for instance.
(3) The Great Khali (w/Ranjin Singh) goes to Smackdown. No big deal here either way. He's become a comedy figure and novelty act used occasionally. Let's hope this doesn't mean he's going to feud with Randy Orton or Christian.
(4) Jimmy Uso to Smackdown. Firmly established tag teams should be moved as pairs. I can't imagine either Jimmy or Jey being in line for a significant singles push. Maybe they'll be reunited on Smackdown before the day is over.
(5) Kelly Kelly to Raw. I'm not this matters much. This prevents her from becoming Daniel Bryan's new love interest now that - for now - Gail Kim and Bryan have been split to separate brands. Maybe if Kharma (Awesome Kong) settles on Raw, Kelly was moved there to be her first victim.
(6) JTG to Raw. I assume he's just going to play the role of a jobber to the stars on the brand. Or maybe he'll team with Jey Uso as The Jays.
(7) Alicia Fox to Smackdown.
(8) William Regal to Smackdown. Where was he before? Does this mean there's hope that he'll end up replacing Booker T on color commentary?
(9) Yoshi Tatsu to Smackdown. No big deal, although perhaps he'll be featured more and get a chance to have longer matches on Smackdown. Putting him in a tag team might be ideal, but that would require WWE caring about tag teams enough to think of doing it.
(10) Drew McIntyre to Raw. This is one of the bigger moves of the Supplemental Draft, behind only Jack Swagger's move. He could get lost in the shuffle, as Booker T told the Smackdown audience on Friday, or it could make him more of a focus for Vince McMahon since, in essence, he'll be a new toy for him to play with.
(11) Natalya to Smackdown. We'll see how the Divas all shake out once the draft is done before looking at potential match-ups for her that will be new.
(12) Curt Hawkins to Raw. Not sure this means much, but maybe someone on Raw's creative team has ideas for him.
(Side Note: The Miz made Twitter comments just now about how WWE wrestlers find out about this the same way everyone does - through WWE.com. He wrote: "Anyone else following the continued #WWEDraft on wwe.com some interesting picks thus far. Its amazing how out of the loop the superstars r.... I remember when I got drafted from Smackdown to ECW I found out through wwe.com..." I commented on this during my VIP Keller Hotline last night, as I think it's disrespectful for the talent to not notify them ahead of WWE.com readers. I elaborated why and what the evolution and motivation of the policy might be.)
(13) Chris Masters to Raw. I was just transcribing my Torch Talk with former WWE Creative Team member John Piermarini for this week's newsletter as this pick came up on WWE.com, and the question I am transcribing is why doesn't Masters get more of a push since he seems to be Vince McMahon's type of wrestler in many respects. Anyway, newsletter subscribers can read Piermarini's full answer in this week's Digital Edition PWTorch Newsletter later today or tomorrow. As for Masters, I think he's been slotted a certain way for so long, it would be hard to change fan perception of him. It would take a really motivated Vince McMahon to transform him, so this just means Masters will be a utility guy doing jobs on Raw instead of Smackdown. I'm not sure I even remembered which brand he was on before today.
(14) Jey Uso to Smackdown. My dreams of a JTG & Jey Uso tag team is snuffed out already. But rejoice, the Usos are reunited.
(They really should draft someone back to their original brand in this supplemental draft to make it seem more credible that what happened to John Cena can happen to anybody.)
(15) Kofi Kingston to Raw. This is pretty big, too, up there with Drew and Swagger. Again, we have to wait until the end to assess where he falls on the new depth chart for Raw. He seems to be in line for a feud with The Miz for the WWE Title, perhaps. Feuding him with Swagger and Drew would just feel like a Smackdown match. I think he's ready for a major singles push.
(16) Ted DiBiase to Smackdown. This was needed. He was totally lost on Raw. If Smackdown is short on young talent with upward mobility, he will get breathing space to develop his potential on Smackdown where, as Booker T said, the roster isn't nearly as stacked as Raw's. I still think DiBiase will headline WWE PPVs some day, but he does tend to come across as boring to Vince McMahon. DiBiase is a bit old school main eventer, the guy who stands in the middle of the chaos and wild characters and is the stable force (the "control group" so to speak) - along the lines of Bret Hart.
(17) Tyson Kidd to Smackdown. This also feels like a JTG type of move where he's just there to fill out some undercard house show matches and do some jobs on TV when needed. He should be more than that, but this is Vince McMahon 2011 WWE and Kidd just doesn't seem to fit in a money slot.
(18) Tamina to Smackdown.
(19) Tyler Reks to Raw. Another guy who could get lost in the mix, or Vince McMahon could notice him and have a slot for him in mind and they could elevate him. There's such a cookie-cutter mold to so much WWE talent in terms of how they look, so anytime a Brodus Clay or Tyler Reks type gets a push, it actually helps the rest stand out too.
(20) Alex Riley to Smackdown. Uh oh! Is Miz getting punished for Tweeting about how "out of the loop" Superstars are earlier? Did WWE, on the fly, decide to split him from Riley? Or is this another "Psych!" moment where he'll be drafted right back to Raw? It seems too early to break up the Miz-Riley duo. But if they're ready to push Riley as a singles heel, maybe this is a way to fast-track him, with the plan being to have Miz and Riley cross paths later.
(21) Beth Phoenix to Raw. If Kharma (Awesome Kong) ends up on Raw, there might be a Mega-Diva-Dream-Match that they could build to for next year's WrestleMania. I think I just put more thought into the Divas Division than WWE will in terms of long-term planning, though.
(22) Sheamus to Smackdown. This is also good as Sheamus seemed lost in the crowd on Raw. Maybe Michael Hayes will have more for him than Brian Gewirtz. This positions him as a possible heel opponent for Randy Orton or Christian.
