-So is WWE going to bother addressing why Jim Ross hosted last week's Raw and why being sprayed with BBQ sauce seemed to cost him that job? The stupid "Hey Jim Ross is back! No he's not! Ha ha ha!" stunt last week served one purpose - to give McMahon and Dunn the jollies of teasing fans of Ross's announcing with a short-lived return. What a waste of time it was if they don't go anywhere with it.
-John Cena begins his attempt to reestablish the value of the WWE Title, a belt he ignored in the weeks leading up to WrestleMania and a belt he blew off getting screwed out of last week on Raw with just a shoulder shrug.
-The idea that Randy Orton, as a babyface, would consider what happened to John Cena at WrestleMania grounds for Cena to step aside in the title picture is ridiculous. Any babyface character should see the injustice dealt to Cena by Rock and be man enough to give him a straight-up rematch and challenge the winner of that.
-Josh Mathews praised the ruling by the Anonymous G.M. to have a five-man gauntlet match. How is it great? What did Truth do to enter the title picture? Or Morrison, for that matter? Had Hornswoggle and Todd Grisham walked out there and said they've never had a title shot, would it be a seven-man gauntlet match.
-That Awesome King intro vignette (she's not officially named yet, but that was her) was pretty compelling. She was off-camera, held a doll, and knocked the head off the doll, then laughed.
-WWE Fact: Last Monday, WWE programming was watched by over 12 million people - more than any other show on ESPN, TNT, Fox News, CW, and NBC... So they're not counting everyone multiple times, since there were four hours and three different show? I also love how they keep taking digs at The CW, the former home of Smackdown, as if that's some bragging right to beat their ratings.
-This match between Sin Cara and Primo is a perfect example of where WWE comes up short in getting everything possible out of matches on TV because they don't incorporate any kind of sports-tone to their presentation. There's a story with Primo that could have been told before this match, with him making his case that he believes he's been overlooked and a new guy is getting all of this attention, but he knows of his history and he believes he can upset him and take his place on the fast-track. If he came across as full of himself or insecure or bitter, it would have given viewers at home and in the arena a reason to get behind Cara and invest in his win. Just throwing this out there, and then having Sin Cara go a marathon by Raw standards with a long competitive match with a guy everyone else sees as a jobber, basically, doesn't do anything for Cara. Sure, he has some flashy moves, but he also failed to beat Primo quickly and the match had a house show pace to it. There was no reason to just throw that out there with no context.
-Oh, good. They've now announced, 34 minutes into the show, that Jim Ross is going to be on the show, in Jerry Lawler's corner for his match against Jack Swagger, who will have Cole in his corner. Mathews said if Lawler can beat Swagger, Lawler gets a rematch against Cole. I still think they needed to address Ross's absence last week after he never returned after the BBQ incident. I was thinking that was a one-off joke last week that would have no purpose to it, and given their history with Ross, it was possible. Now it looks like there are still chapters yet to unfold.
-Ross shaking the Cole Mine cage like that trying to get at Cole was hilarious. Also hilarious: When Ross told the ref "aw, shut up!" when the ref told him to back off the ring apron when he was offering advice to Lawler. Also funny: Ross telling Lawler to watch for the anklelock, as if Lawler didn't know that.
-Lawler's not a very good friend considering he could decide the stipulations for his match against Cole and he didn't put the Raw Announcing Job at stake.
-Edge walked out and did his full entrance routine. He said many people think WWE doesn't hurt. He said it does. He said eight years ago he broke his neck. He said he had spinal fusion surgery and it's really in-depth surgery. He said he knew he was wrestling on borrowed time from that time on. He said the last little while he's been in a lot of pain and losing feeling in his arms. He said he had strength tests done, and he passed. He said he made it through WrestleMania, but WWE wanted him to get more tests and the MRIs showed that he has to retire. He said thankfully he won't end up in a wheelchair now because of those tests. Edge began to lose it a little, trying to hold back the tears. The crowd rose and applauded and gave him a standing ovation. Edge began to really tear up. "This is a little tougher than I thought it was going to be." He said he wanted to leave on his terms and felt he was letting everyone in WWE down, but his friend Christian told him he always performed on his terms. He said if you told the kid who grew up watching Hulk Hogan that he'd hold more titles than anyone in WWE history and that he'd retire as World Champion and his last match would be a successful title defense at WrestleMania, that'd be considered a huge success. He talked about his history, growing up in front of the fans. He talked about the live sex celebration he had, "thankfully with Lita, and not Vickie Guerrero." He said he hopes he has earned the respect of everyone in the locker room and that of the fans. He said he tried to gives the fans everything he had every single night and in turn the fans gave it right back to him. "I'm gonna miss all of this." He said he's going to go eat a whole lotta ice cream tonight. He nodded to Jim Ross at ringside and acknowledged that he hired him. He said he'd do it all over again. He closed: "So thank you, thank you very much." He received another standing ovation.
-Edge is one of those guys who has confided that he was looking forward to retiring in time to still enjoy life after wrestling both physically and mentally. I hope the damage found on the MRI doesn't affect his life as long as he's not taking bumps. There was always concern with a surgery such as the type he had that there was a limit on how much longer he could wrestle. Chris Benoit and Sean "X-Pac" Waltman had similar surgeries as Edge, I believe. Kurt Angle opted for a different surgery.
-Nice speech from Edge. Touching, genuine, and a glimpse into who he is in real life. I don't think I've heard anything bad about him over the years from people behind the scenes, which is really saying something considering how easy it is to create enemies in the business.
-It's pretty scary to think about what might have happened in a few weeks at Extreme Rules in that ladder match if he had a vulnerability in his neck and he landed hard or awkwardly in that match.
-Good for Miz for saying that the main event of WrestleMania is the WWE Championship, so the main event goes through him, so all of these people saying John Cena vs. The Rock is the main event are being presumptuous. He said he does what he says, he's not a talker. Lawler called him out for saying he's not a talker.
-The Miz: "The Earth will spin, the sun will rise, and The Miz will always be awesome. I don't think I'm great. People say I'm the best, I'm the greatest. I don't think that, God does. I've been blessed with the genetic ability to better than everybody else."
-I love that Jim Ross gets back to the broadcast table finally for a Raw main event and he can barely get a word in edgewise because of Miz talking nonstop.
-From Cena vs. Rock to Cena vs. Truth in seven days. Ratings will be interesting. If WWE planned ahead they could have done something - anything - the last few months (weeks, even) to make people think Truth was on a roll headed into this week to give some believability to the near falls by Truth at the end of the show.
