We present today's latest question and answer from Part 9. Tune in tomorrow for the next series of Q&A's in Part 9 from the Eric Bischoff Torch Talk.
Wade Keller: Okay, a Devil's Advocate point of view. I don't think it's an A or B argument. I think there are nuances to it. But UFC markets fights off of two personalities that you're emotionally involved in, one you want to see win, another you want to see lose. They go for that whenever they can. And it tends to do better pay-per-view buys when there's a villain like Brock Lesnar and a hero like Randy Couture. In that respect there are some similarities (between MMA and pro wrestling) even though fans go into wrestling knowing that it's scripted, predetermined, orchestrated…
Eric Bischoff: Wade, I don't mean to interrupt you, but that's true in every sport. The best football games are the ones where there's a heated rivalry between one and the other. The history of boxing was built on the guy you wanted to see win and the guy you wanted to see get beat. That's not new to the UFC.
Keller: You're right. I would add to this counter-argument that when you throw the ring to it, when you strip them down without uniforms and team histories, and it is a person in a one-on-one fight to get somebody to knocked out, tapped out, or in wrestling pinned, and add in promos, I think it's probably underselling the similarities to say it's just like any other sport. That would be my point of view. The heart of my question is do you think that because of UFC's success and a whole generation that's grown up seeing the real version of men fighting in the ring that that should make [pro wrestling] promoters today gravitate more toward realism, more toward the complete opposite of UFC, or my guess is this is your answer, it makes no difference because wrestling is it's own entity and it's going to fail or succeed based on its own merits?
Bischoff: You ask really good questions, but you ask really, really long question, and there's usually multiple questions in there. (laughs) Let me back this up so I remember the first one. It really isn't a question. I guess I agree with your point. If there's something - and this is one of the things that's wrong with wrestling, well, not wrong with wrestling, but it's one of the reasons wrestling isn't where it probably could be for either company right now. And that's that somehow along the way, somebody has convinced themselves - and it's more than one person - that, Oh, let's let the audience decide. That's just a cheap, lazy way of hiding the fact that you don't know how to make them care.
