Report by James Caldwell, PWTorch assistant editor
Main Event opened with a rarity - pyro. Tom Phillips introduced the show before going to the ring, where Renee Young was standing by with a disheveled Paul Heyman. Renee noted that Heyman's client, Cesaro, will be facing Sheamus tonight. Heyman cut her off and ran down Sheamus before noting a Paul Heyman Guy, Brock Lesnar, beat The Undertaker at WrestleMania. Heyman repeated himself to boos.
Suddenly, Sheamus's music interrupted. Out came the U.S. champion with a word for Heyman. Renee gifted the mic to Sheamus, who asked Heyman how he's doing. Sheamus turned serious that if Heyman does not get out of the ring, he will get his face kicked in. Heyman said Sheamus cannot do that in front of a lady. He said this is behavior unbecoming of a champion. Sheamus said he's right, then asked Renee to leave the ring. Heyman's trump card left the ring, leaving Heyman to plead mercy.
Sheamus started counting to five for Heyman to leave the ring, then Heyman decided to man-up and offer his chin to Sheamus. Sheamus hit four and Heyman decided it was time to bail from the ring. Suddenly, Cesaro jumped Sheamus from behind. Cesaro dropped Sheamus with the Neutralizer, then posed to boos. Heyman collected his breath on the ring apron, then Cesaro gripped Sheamus for the Big Swing, but Heyman told him to cut it off and walk away, which drew boos.
On the outside, Heyman said the only reason why he did not have Cesaro swing Sheamus into oblivion was to save something for later. Heyman, with his hand on Cesaro's belly, said Cesaro will prove to be the Main Event against Sheamus tonight. Sheamus shot back an angry look from inside the ring.
Up Next: Dolph Ziggler vs. Damien Sandow.
[Break]
Last Month on Raw: Hugh Jackman and Dolph Ziggler teamed up to give Damien Sandow more problems than he can handle.
In-ring: Damien Sandow took the mic in the arena. Sandow repeated himself from Raw that people don't want to hear what he has to say, then Dolph Ziggler's music interrupted mid-sentence. "Handcuffs!" Sandow indicated verbally and with his hands as Ziggler came out for the opening match.
1 -- DAMIEN SANDOW vs. DOLPH ZIGGLER
Phillips and Byron Saxton talked about Sandow "trying to get noticed" and other entertainment-related items. In the wrestling environment, you get noticed by winning matches. It's simple. But, WWE has moved away from that fundamental concept. Sandow took control early on, including utilizing an inverted Sharpshooter, but Ziggler broke free. Sandow complained to the ref about matters, tried to follow up, and walked right into Zig-Zag. Ziggler with the pin and the win.
WINNER: Ziggler at 4:16.
Raw Review: The Shield and Evolution continued their war last night. They meet again at Payback in three weeks.
[Break]
2 -- ALICIA FOX vs. EMMA
Emma was out first, then Fox entered the ring as the announcers discussed Fox having a meltdown - or a moment, as Fox described it - last night on Raw. Everyone was set to compete, but Fox took a mic and said he's surprised Emma showed up. She threw the mic at Emma, then beat her up. The ref tried to restore order, then finally got a clean break to call for the opening bell.
Fox continued assaulting Emma after the bell, drawing the referee's ire. The ref backed away Fox, who then walked into a quick pin from Emma, similar to Paige's victory last night on Raw. Afterward, Fox threw another fit. She taunted ring announcer Tony Chimel, ringside P.A., and the announcers. Things got out of control when Fox knocked around their papers and knocked them to the ground. Fox taunted the crowd to boos to wrap up another "moment."
WINNER: Emma at 3:10. The key question is whether there will be follow-up on Fox's new spotlight, or if this will be typical WWE mid-card where WWE is interested in something new for one week, then moves away next week.
Backstage: Sheamus was shown stomping down the hallway. Renee Young stopped him to ask if he's physically able to compete against Cesaro tonight. Sheamus said he's more than ready, and it won't be a match tonight, but a fight.
[Break]
Raw Rebound: Kane KO'ed Daniel Bryan, who announced he needs neck surgery.
Announcers: Back to Phillips and Saxton, who regained their bearings after Fox's attack. They talked solemnly about Bryan needing surgery on Thursday, then Phillips announced The Authority will address the state of the WWE World Title this Monday on Raw, which will buy WWE enough time to evaluate the results of Bryan's surgery.
In-ring: Sheamus was introduced for the main event.
[Break]
3 -- U.S. champion SHEAMUS vs. CESARO (w/Paul Heyman) -- non-title match
Brawling early on as Sheamus tried to turn this into a fight. European Uppercuts followed from both men. Sheamus drove Cesaro to the corner and tried to rough him up as Heyman sold concern ringside. Cesaro then hit the floor and chatted with Heyman as the crowd picked up a brief dueling chant of "Let's Go Sheamus / Ces-ar-o."
Sheamus got tired of waiting for Cesaro, then a game of cat & mouse unfolded. Sheamus tried to wait patiently, but walked into an uppercut from Cesaro. Cesaro followed with a neck-snap across the middle rope. Sheamus cut off a corner attack, then delivered a slingshot battering ram for a two count. Sheamus sold liking the feel of this match before suplexing Cesaro across the ring for another nearfall.
Sheamus climbed to the top turnbuckle at 5:30, but Cesaro crotched him before he could execute a flying move. Cesaro followed with an uppercut before launching Sheamus off the top to the mat for a two count. Cesaro consulted with Heyman about his next move heading to break.
[Break]
More brawling and fighting and scrapping back from break. Cesaro got the best of the exchange, then continued the attack. But, Sheamus came back with a double sledgehammer. Both men recovered to their feet, then Sheamus wanted Ten Forearms to the Chest, but Cesaro elbowed away. Sheamus adjusted to White Noise, but Cesaro slipped out, ducked a Brogue Kick, and nailed a German Suplex with bridge pin for a two count. Cesaro wanted the Neutralizer, but Sheamus countered into White Noise for a nearfall. Great exchange.
Both men to their feet at 11:30. Sheamus wanted the Brogue Kick, but Cesaro ducked and rolled to the ring apron. Cesaro neck-snapped Sheamus again, then uncharacteristically climbed to the top turnbuckle. Sheamus cut him off, knocking Cesaro to the floor. Sheamus then flew down at Cesaro with a big splash as Heyman shook his head ringside.
The fight continued ringisde with Sheamus landing an uppercut, but Cesaro back-dropped him over the guardrail into the timekeeper's area. The young fans ringside shouted at Sheamus to get back in the ring to avoid a count-out, but Cesaro bashed him into the guardrail. Sheamus then reversed a whip and took both of them over the guardrail into the front row. The fight continued in the crowd as ref Chioda hit a ten count.
Post-match: Sheamus threw Cesaro into the ring steps. But, Heyman provided a chair for Cesaro to use on Sheamus. Refs spilled out to try to restore order, then the fight moved into the ring. Suddenly, Sheamus sprung on Cesaro with a Brogue Kick, popping the crowd. Cesaro recovered to the floor with Heyman, then Sheamus's music played. Sheamus stood tall in the ring as Cesaro tried to shake off the effects of the kick. Sheamus then left the ring as Main Event signed off.
WINNER: Double count-out at 13:22. Really good match, as described by Bruce Mitchell live in the building. This would make for a good re-match at Payback, this time for the U.S. Title.
