Taped the Week of Mar. 28
Report by James Caldwell, PWTorch assistant editor
This week's next-to-last episode of WWE Superstars on WGN opened with Smackdown's Jack Korpela saying it's finally here - no, not Superstars, WrestleMania Week. Curt Hawkins, complete with sunglasses, was out first to start the show. Cue up Matt Striker's basic description of Hawkins's journey to WWE, then Trent Barreta stormed the ring for a match-up flashing back to 2010 Superstars.
1 -- CURT HAWKINS vs. TRENT BARRETA
Back-and-forth action to start the match. Hawkins tried to wear down Trent and take away his high-flying offensive attack, then Trent caught Hawkins with an enziguiri that sent Hawkins flying through the ropes to the floor. Trent followed with a high-impact flip dive that caught the announcers off guard in the middle of their WrestleMania conversation. Back in the ring, Trent scored a two count, then Hawkins resumed control of the match. And the announcers resumed their WrestleMania conversation. Out of nowhere, Trent caught Hawkins in the corner for a Tornado DDT, which Korpela called the Dudebuster DDT. Sounds like something off the Dairy Queen menu. Barreta with the cover for the win.
WINNER: Barreta at 5:21. Basic five-minute Superstars match. A professional, serviceable match that didn't get in the way of the announcers having a conversation about WrestleMania. (*1/4)
Still to come: Six-Divas tag match in the main event.
[Commercial Break. A new Vaseline commercial featuring Michael Strahan is using the Usos's theme music. Not sure what that says about the product or the Usos.]
Announcers: Raw's Superstars duo of Scott Stanford and Josh Mathews were shown on-camera talking about WrestleMania. It's always a treat to watch Mathews's facial expressions as he watches Stanford talk. It's like he's waiting for Stanford to say something off-base.
WM27 video plug: The Undertaker vs. Triple H set to the Old Western country theme. Then, a career retrospective on both men's careers leading to their WrestleMania showdown. Who will be The One?
[Commercial Break. "Tough Enough" plug focusing on the contestants debuting on Monday's season premiere. Jeremiah Riggs is going to be a star.]
WM27 video plug: Snooki's involvement in the six-person tag match at WrestleMania. They included footage of the Snooki & Trish vs. Lay-Cool bar-room brawl on Monday's Raw.
[Commercial Break. "The Chaperone" plug part 1,295.]
WrestleMania performance: Keri Hilson opens things up with "America the Beautiful."
WM27 video plug: Edge vs. Alberto Del Rio. Some love for the Smackdown brand's top match with the World Title on the line and Christian involved in the proceedings. A replay of the Royal Rumble ending was edited to show Orton eliminated, then Del Rio celebrating, which omitted Santino as the final man eliminated by Del Rio. Years from now, people will wonder what WWE was thinking with that decision.
The Miz hype video: Stanford introduced a video package on The Miz appearing on Conan last week. They included the clip of Miz giving Conan his new nickname and catchphrase. Up next, it's a replay of Rock, Cena, and Miz in the same ring at the same time Monday on Raw.
[Commercial Break. Hall of Fame ceremony plug.]
Raw Rebound: The Rock calling out John Cena in the final segment on Monday's Raw. They included various historical WWE footage of Rock putting slaps on lips and boots to asses. The video transitioned into Cena answering Rock's call, then Miz interrupting to set up the pre-WrestleMania physicality.
[Commercial Break]
In-ring: The Bella Twins's music hit to bring out the Bellas, joined by Melina, for the six-Divas tag match. Cue up the announcers on-camera, where Mathews shot Stanford one of his looks after Stanford said something silly. Eve's music hit to bring out the Divas champion along with Natalya and Gail Kim for the babyface trio.
2 -- Divas champion EVE & NATALYA & GAIL KIM vs. BELLA TWINS & MELINA
As the match kicked off, the announcers plugged the sole Divas-related match at Mania featuring Team Snooki vs. Team Lay-Cool. Mathews asked Stanford if he'll be GTL'ing. Stanford self-deprecated that he doesn't go to the gym (strike one with McMahon), doesn't tan, and he doesn't do laundry (strike two with everyone). The heels isolated Gail Kim in this one. Eve eventually hot-tagged into the match and the action broke down. The Bellas did the Switcheroo during the melee while Melina and Natalya scrapped on the outside. Back in the ring, the fresher Bella dropped Eve with an X-Pac facebuster for the pin and the win. The heels stood tall to close this week's Superstars.
WINNERS: Team Bellas at 6:23. Interesting result. As for the match, it continued the women's division feuds from Raw and kept the Bellas on the chase for Eve's Divas Title, which could come into play post-Mania. (*1/4)
