PPV Pre-Show on WWE Network
The show started with the screen displaying "In Memory of Dusty Rhodes," who died on Thursday.
From the arena, Renee Young introduced the pre-show. Renee was joined by Booker T, Byron Saxton, and Corey Graves for some preliminary PPV thoughts.
Renee then got serious talking about Dusty. She said they will celebrate Dusty throughout the night. Booker shared a story, Saxton talked about working with Dusty in the NXT office sporting his Texas Longhorns cap, and Graves talked about Dusty seeing himself as a director making movies. Graves got choked up talking about missing Dusty.
Renee went through some tweets on Dusty, starting with Vince McMahon. Also, Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, and The Rock. Booker said Dusty will be missed most of all.
The pre-show panel switched gears to discussing top PPV matches, including John Cena vs. Kevin Owens II.
Off to Tom Phillips at the social media lounge. Phillips hyped an interview with NXT champion Kevin Owens later in the pre-show.
Backstage, WWE ran a pre-taped interview with IC champion Ryback where the sound was about 10 seconds ahead of the video. Ryback called Big Show a big bully who doesn't know who he is. Ryback vowed to eat up Big Show tonight.
Locker Room: Dean Ambrose pulled up a chair next to Roman Reigns. Ambrose, with possession of the WWE Title belt owned by Seth Rollins, asked Reigns what happens when he cashes in MITB. Ambrose, confident that he will win the title from Rollins and Reigns will win the MITB match tonight, asked if Reigns will ambush him or give him a heads up. Reigns said Ambrose already knows the answer, then he fist-bumped Ambrose.
Video Package: Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose WWE Title ladder match on the main PPV tonight.
Authority Interview: Stephanie McMahon checked in from The Authority's office to discuss some business at hand. Stephanie said they are going to respect Seth Rollins's wishes to not have The Authority ringside in the WWE Title match tonight. She said they are in Seth's corner providing moral support, but they guarantee no involvement from The Authority tonight. Booker questioned that, prompting Stephanie to say no one cares what Booker thinks, but they would like to assure the audience that they will stick by their guarantee. Corey Graves followed up with a question about what happens to Seth if he loses the title tonight - is he out of The Authority? Steph said Seth knows exactly what the risks are.
Down to ringside for Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, and JBL to discuss matters.
In-ring: R-Truth, then King Barrett were introduced for the opening match. Barrett was dressed in a goofy-looking royal outfit. Like a combination of an English and Roman ruler.
A -- KING BARRETT vs. R-TRUTH
Truth took control early on, then knocked Barrett to the floor for an early mid-match break to hype WWE content.
[Network Break]
Back from break, the announcers had one of their silly arguments to distract themselves from the match happening in the ring. Lawler was in rare form with the joke book. Barrett scored a super-close two count after smashing Truth in the nose, but he was unable to follow up with the Bullhammer. Truth then grabbed Barrett from behind for a crucifix pin to score the win.
Post-match, Truth approached the announcers to give them assignments in his kingdom now that he's beaten The King (of the Ring). Truth told Jerry Lawler that he can be his stunt-double. Truth then took Barrett's crown and started to leave, but he decided to the crown back to Barrett and high-tail it away from ringside.
WINNER: Truth at 5:49. And the King of the Ring continues to be a curse.
Announcers: Cole, Lawler, and JBL turned serious to discuss Dusty Rhodes. Cole said Dusty was proud of working with the young talent at the Performance Center in NXT. He then fed to a long-form video package on Dusty's career. That was a video package.
Back to the studio panel, where Renee Young cried (off-camera) through her transition to the social media lounge.
Social Media Lounge: NXT champion Kevin Owens walked in to talk with Tom Phillips. Owens shot down the idea of having fear going into his re-match against John Cena tonight. After all, he beat him once already. Owens said he's not being disrespectful to anyone, just speaking the truth. How about a Fight Owens Fight rally towel? Owens mockingly said there's no way he's becoming John Cena. He said just because he wants to beat Cena doesn't mean he wants to be him. Owens pie-faced Phillips on the way out.
Back to the studio panel, where Renee gathered herself to transition to MITB match discussion. Corey Graves narrated a video package on the MITB ladder match, which Renee said will start the PPV.
