Report by James Caldwell, PWTorch assistant editor
Scheduled for the Pre-Show: Goldust & Stardust vs. New Day.
Live One-Hour PPV Pre-Show
The panel is Renee Young with Booker T, Alex Riley, and Paul Heyman. The group bantered back and forth about the carnage theme for this month's PPV. Tom Phillips then chatted things up from the Social Media Lounge.
Backstage: WWE tag champs The Miz and Damien Sandow (well, just Miz) talked to Naomi about his Hollywood offer still on the table, but only if they're still champs by the end of the night. Miz mentioned his wife (Maryse) in the conversation. Naomi wasn't sold on Miz's pitch, but Miz promised her that if he wins tonight, then she wins tonight.
Back to the studio, where the announcers did a Tale of the Tape for the ring stairs. Paul Heyman just sat quietly unmoved by this. Things broke down when Riley decided to send a text to Dolph Ziggler as Renee tried to break down the undercard. Major stretch on this being a one-hour pre-show tonight.
At the social media lounge, Tom Phillips brought in Dolph Ziggler to field some Twitter questions. Topics included Sting showing up at Survivor Series to help the good guys beat The Authority, chasing the WWE World Hvt. Title, and winning back the IC Title tonight.
In-ring: New Day was introduced for the pre-show match after Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, and JBL introduced themselves at the commentary position. The Rhodes Bros. were out next, with "Stardust" Cody Rhodes dressed in lime green paint tonight.
A -- NEW DAY (KOFI KINGSTON & BIG E. w/Xavier Woods) vs. RHODES BROS. (GOLDUST & "STARDUST" CODY RHODES)
Once the bell sounded, Xavier dropped out of the ring to the floor to indicate it's Kofi and Big E. representing the trio tonight. The announcers treated this like a comedown match in the middle of Raw talking about everything except the match early on. Meanwhile, the Rhodes Bros. isolated Kofi in their corner as Xavier tried to cheerlead from the outside.
Kofi finally made the hot tag to Big E., who ran over Cody with power offense. Big E. followed with a running splash, then tried Big Ending, but Goldust ran in. Big E. kind of waved at Goldust, who fell off the ring apron to the floor. Cody tried to pin Big E. from behind, but Kofi broke it up. Kofi then yanked Goldust to the outside and Big E. and Kofi combined to spike Cody into the mat - The Midnight Hour - for the pin and the win. JBL said he thinks this team is hiding something and fake being so happy, but they're a good tag team.
WINNERS: New Day at 11:40. The announcing was dreadful here. They sounded like they wanted to be anywhere except ringside calling an inconsequential wrestling match, and part of it seemed by design based on how they were produced.
Back to the studio, where Renee directed Booker, Heyman, and Riley in some additional discussion on the PPV matches.
Newsworthy at the end of the panel discussion was Renee Young relaying an update that Brock Lesnar is scheduled to defend the WWE World Title at the Royal Rumble PPV. The opponent will be either John Cena (current #1 contender) or a new #1 contender if Seth Rollins beats Cena in the main event tonight.
