KELLER'S TNA BOUND FOR GLORY REPORT
OCTOBER 10, 2010
DAYTONA BEACH, FLA.
LIVE ON PAY-PER-VIEW
-A video package aired featuring a lot of dramatic footage leading up to this PPV, TNA's self-proclaimed biggest of the year.
-Mike Tenay and Taz introduced the show as cameras panned the crowd in the Daytona Beach venue.
1 -- MOTOR CITY MACHINE GUNS (Chris Sabin & Alex Shelley) vs. GENERATION ME (Max & Jeremy Buck) -- TNA Tag Team Title Match
Match began at 8:07. Rapid-fire action early, as you'd anticipate from these two teams. GenMe got early advantage. The Guns came back at 3:00 and hit some speedy double-team spots including a dive through the ropes onto both Buck brothers. Taz said Sabin had some tests done on his neck late last week. GenMe double-DDT'd Shelley at 4:00. Jeremy gloated and showboated afterward. Taz asked Tenay how he's not a fan of Generation Me. Tenay said he appreciates their athletic ability, but not their attitudes.
A groggy Shelley jumped off the top rope and double-stomped Jeremy's gut and then hot-tagged Sabin at 7:00. Sabin whipped Shelley into Max hung upside down in the corner, then Sabin basement dropkicked him, then dove onto Jeremy at ringside with a graceful slingshot. Sabin them slingshot clotheslined Max for a near fall. Taz begged fans to try to find action like that elsewhere. Tenay said there is nowhere else that has a tag team division with these incredible action-packed matches. The Guns went into more double team moves and near falls.
At 9:00 Max hit a top rope snap neckbreaker on Sabin as Jeremy took out Shelley with a dive at ringside. GenMe then executed a 450 splash as Sabin was bridged over the second rope. Shelley broke up that near fall. The crowd chanted "This is Awesome!" Shelley rolled Sabin to his corner, then moved to the ring apron to make a tag. Shelley checked with the ref if that was legal. Taz asked if that really mattered at this point. (Yes, rules matter, and their consistent competent enforcement matters, or else you can't tell as effective of a story in the ring without that structure.)
GenMe quickly used double-teaming to take Shelley down and double-splash him for a near fall. The crowd chanted "Motor City! Motor City!" Jeremy hit a 450 on Shelley, but Sabin entered and caught Max on the top rope and gave him released German suplex. The Guns then double-teamed Jeremy with their finisher off the top rope for the win.
WINNERS: The Motor City Machine Guns in 13:00 to retain the TNA Tag Team Titles.
STAR RATING: ***3/4 -- Very good match for this style of wrestling. Whatever criticism some people (both inside and outside of the industry) for this style of wrestling, it's one very valid approach to take to separate TNA from WWE and, in the bigger picture, give pro wrestling something valid to tout as compared to MMA, which is capturing the younger generation of men.
-Christy Hemme interviewed Madison Rayne and Tara backstage. Rayne called Christy a "phony bitch" and a "skank.," pretty much out of nowhere. TNA should cut back on trash words like that as it's just heavy-handed desperate-sounding, and overall unpleasant when out of nowhere the Knockouts throw those words around. It just makes everyone associated with the product seem trashy or the writers seem like they have unresolved issues with women. It's also the equivalent of putting three exclamation marks at the end of every sentence you write to try to make them seem more important. Just let the content of the message tell the story without relying so heavily on "skank" and "bitch" type words so often. Rayne said the difference between Tara and everyone else is that Tara appreciates what she did for her and is indebted to her for life. Tara was okay with the first part of the sentence, but not the second. In classic Vince Russo/TNA fashion, before you can take two breaths after a partnership or alliance is created, they're already hinting at dissension. The first hint at dissension should be in six months at the earliest, not a week or two after they form a partnership. It's so ADD of the booking team. Rayne also said Mickie James can't just walk into TNA and take over the Knockouts. She said there's only one queen bee in TNA "and it's me." Tara pointed at herself and seemed surprised Rayne pointed at herself.
-A video package aired with Miss Tessmacher talking about the ruling regarding the Beautiful People.
2 -- MADISON RAYNE vs. TARA vs. ANGELINA LOVE vs. VELVET SKY -- Knockouts Title Four-Way.
Mickie James came out to her country entrance song to be the special referee. Tenay explained the backstory of how Rayne once beat Tara to send her out of TNA, but then managed to orchestrate her return. Rayne and Tara pecked each other on the lips which stopped Tenay and Taz in their tracks with the cartoon-like "humina-humina-humina" moment. As the BPs made their crotch-rubbing ring entrance, Taz declared, "Let the pigeons loose." Does anyone know what that means, and why does Taz assume everyone knows? Taz complimented Mickie's outfit. Match began at 8:30. Madison tagged Love into the ring at the start to avoid facing Sky at first. Sky and Love high-fived at the start before locking up with a friendly exchange.
Sky gave Tara a head scissors and scored a two count at 3:00. By 5:00 all four were in the ring. Sky gave Rayne a jumping DDT. Tara hit Sky from behind and set up a Widow's Peak, but Sky escaped and shoved Tara into Rayne on the ring apron. Tara rolled through on a pin attempt and yanked on Sky's tights to capture the TNA Knockouts Title. Rayne looked on from ringside and seemed displeased. Tara also didn't celebrate as she feared Rayne's reaction. Rayne shoved Mickie, so Mickie got up and punched Rayne. Tara grabbed her hair in distress and then shot Mickie a dirty look. Mickie returned to the back, smiling and laughing along the way.
[The video glitches are across all systems, by the way. We've gotten emails from Comcast and DirectTV customers experiencing brief interruptions in the signal.]
-Hemme interviewed Eric Young backstage. Young was covered in tattoos that looked more like a toddler with a marker played a joke on him while he napped. Christy asked about his relationship with Orlando Jordan. Young said he cracked the code. Christy overreacted to a little play on words Young used. He said most of Jordan's family disowned him because of his lifestyle. "Who cares if he's bi... polar." Ha ha ha ha. Jordan walked up to Young wearing a white lace long shirt, white lace bell bottom pants, and a white lace head scarf. Jordan offered Hemme a sucker. Hemme turned him down.
3 -- INK INC. (Jesse Neal & Shannon Moore) vs. ERIC YOUNG & ORLANDO JORDAN
Jordan gave Young his sucker. Young accepted it into his mouth which caused Tenay to gag. Tenay says Jordan was "showing off his tats." Tenay shouldn't say words that only people under age 35 should say. Match began at 8:41.
Early in the match Ink Inc. crotch Young on the top rope, then planted Jordan behind him, then shook the top rope so it looked like they were dry humping each other. Taz said Jordan had "whacked out zany shenanigans." He said he gets into the head of his opponent with mind games. Moore got confused at 6:00 and tagged Young. Young messed with his head. Jordan asked what he was doing. Young punched Jordan. He acted like he got a hot-tag and rallied with a flurry of offensive moves. The crowd didn't know what to make of it. Ink Inc. then double-teamed Jordan for the win. Tenay laughed at Young's antics, then asked, "What the hell did we just watch?" Taz said Jordan needs a new partner. Young raised the arms of Moore and Neal, but also hugged Jordan.
WINNERS: Ink Inc. in 7:00.
STAR RATING: * -- Another example of TNA breaking up a team as soon as they form the team. It's comical in a bad way how often that pattern has played out over the years. I don't get what happened with Young, nor do I think I or anyone really cares.
-Hemme interviewed Jeff Hardy who talked about winning his title with the Swanton Bomb, baby. He also morphed into Goldust with a little biting growl at the camera at the end.
4 -- JAY LETHAL vs. DOUGLAS WILLIAMS -- X Division Championship of the World Match
It's annoying they're now calling the X Title the "X Division Championship of the World." What other X Titles are there where that wordy added phrase "of the world" is necessary to differentiate it from other X Titles? How does adding "world" to another title do more to help that title than diminish the value of the actual World Heavyweight Title? Match began at 8:52.
Lethal slingshot dove onto Williams at ringside at 2:00. Back in the ring Lethal went for a slingshot dropkick, but Williams side stepped him and then too over offense. Lethal countered a front facelock with a Northern Lights Suplex attempt. Williams blocked it and took over offense. After a series of suplexes and near falls, Williams grew frustrated with Earl Hebner's slow count (it was slow) and complained. He then executed a top rope huracanrana, but Lethal had time to recover and rolled through for the leverage three count. Taz said Williams prides himself a "thinking man's wrestler," but he let his frustration get the best of him after those near falls and went with a different styles and it backfired.
WINNER: Lethal in 8:00.
STAR RATING: ** --
-Afterward, as Lethal celebrated in the crowd and teared up, Robbie E of "Shore" attacked him from behind. Cookie cheered him on from ringside as he threw Lethal into the ring and continued the beating. Robbie told Lethal he's a disgrace to New Jersey (which explains the placement of the "Cribs"-like segment of Lethal at home in New Jersey on Thursday, which seemed a little out of place otherwise. Robbie said he's taking the X Title back to New Jersey with him and add some class to it. Cookie said, "Jersey's in the house, bitches!" The thumping theme song then played as they danced over Lethal's KO'd body.
-A video package aired on the Abyss-Rob Van Dam feud.
5 -- ABYSS vs. ROB VAN DAM -- Monster's Ball Match
Before the match Abyss said 10-10-10 has arrived and so will "They" tonight. RVD's entrance then took place. Match began at 9:08. The crowd loudly chanted "RVD! RVD!" at the start. RVD attacked Abyss in a manner consistent with someone seeking revenge for someone almost murdering him and leaving him in a bloody heap and costing him his World Title. Taz said Abyss is done in TNA after this match. No shots of Dixie Carter, Hulk Hogan, or Eric Bischoff yet on this show. It's actually been refreshing to see the wrestlers who can still "go" carry the first hour or so of this event.
At 3:00 RVD made a comeback. RVD countered Abyss and hit a bulldog onto the barbed wire wrapped board. RVD went for Rolling Thunder, but Abyss rolled out of the way and RVD landed on the barbed wire. At 7:00 RVD flipped over the top rope onto Abyss on a table bridge at ringside. Back in the ring RVD hit a jump spin sidekick into a chair Abyss was holding up. Abyss went down. RVD set up a cross-ring dropkick off the top rope, but Abyss stood up as RVD acted stupid and postured to the crowd and pointed at his shoulders. Who wants to cheer for someone so easily distracted and unwise with strategy? Abyss threw a chair at RVD and knocked him off the top rope.
RVD came back and climbed to the top rope at 11:00. He signaled for the Five-Star Frosplash, but again he postured and played to the crowd with the thumbs to the shoulder thing so when he dove, Abyss moved. RVD just looks like a total idiot now. Abyss went to ringside and grabbed Janice, the nail board at RVD's head. He swung it at RVD and RVD, predictably, ducked and then threw a chair at Abyss. He followed up by starting to climb to the top rope, but instead he saw Janice and picked it up. "Why the hell not?" asked Tenay. Taz said, "Turnabout is fair play." He swung it at Abyss's gut. Abyss shook in pain. RVD kicked him in the head and hit a Five Star for the win.
WINNER: RVD in 13:00.
STAR RATING: **1/2 -- The match was what the match should have been given the backstory and the participants. They managed to have a violent match without going overboard and managing to make the moves matter more than usual and not just come one after another with no selling at all.
-RVD celebrated. The camera zoomed in on Abyss who was bleeding from his lip or mouth. Abyss waved the camera toward him and said, "10-10-10. Get ready. Get ready! Because here we come."
-A video package aired on the whole storyline of internal politics in TNA with Kevin Nash, Sting, et al.
6 -- KEVIN NASH & STING & THE POPE vs. SAMOA JOE & JEFF JARRETT
Tenay said he's tired of all of this talk about conspiracy theories because there's no proof. Taz said he understands the viewers being confused. He said they can't answer questions people may have as it's all loaded with subterfuge. Match began at 9:30. Joe opened against Pope. Taz said he's joined Jarrett in this battle in honor and respect for Hulk Hogan. Sting tagged in and hit Joe with a Stinger Splash at 2:00. He went for another, but Joe caught him and slammed him with a chokeslam. Sting bailed out to ringside. Joe went after him and threw him into the security railing.
Nash tagged in at 4:00 and went into his signature corner offense against Joe. He then tagged in Pope who continued the beating with stomps on Joe in the corner. Pope did a swing elbow in the corner and then celebrated. He tagged Sting back in, but Joe caught Pope and Sting with clotheslined with each arm at once. Nash entered and had a slo-mo exchange with a reverse swing by Nash into a splash in the corner that didn't look good. Joe followed with a high roundkick to Nash's head. Jarrett called for Joe to tag him in.
Joe went for the tag, but Jarrett leaped to the floor to avoid the tag. Joe was fuming. Jarrett clenched his mouth and walked backward. Joe stared at Jarrett as Nash, Sting, and Pope stood behind him. They said "I told you!" Joe went after all three. They triple-teamed him. Tenay wondered why Jeff did that. "More unanswered questions, I guess," Taz said. Nash remained in the ring as Sting and Pope returned to the ring apron. He gave Joe his Jackknife powerbomb for the win.
WINNERS: Nash & Sting & Pope in 7:00.
STAR RATING: * -- More of an angle than a match with some decent spots and other spots not good.
-Christy interviewed Mr. Anderson. He apologied to Kurt Angle and his kids and dog and neighbors for ending his career tonight. He said Angle put himself in that position. He said things were going "swimmingly" until he punched him in the nuts. He said the left and right one both hurt equally.
-Team 3D walked to the ring to their music. Taz said he still doesn't know what's going on with them. Brother Ray asked the fans if "you crazy mother truckers are having a good time tonight or what?" He talked about he and Devon making a commitment to one another in 1996 to become the best tag team ever. He said they've busted their asses for (nearly) 15 years to earn the respect of fans like those in the crowd. He listed their tag team championships. He announced that they've reached a point where tey feel there's nothing left to accomplish as a team, so as of this moment "Team 3D is officially retired." He said they have one last request. He said if they're going out, they want to go out with one more match. So they're not really retired as of that moment. That was the shortest retirement ever.
Ray said they wanted to challenge the Machine Guns so they could be the team that officially retired Team 3D, but if they beat the Guns, then they retire as the 24 time tag team champions (and also the team least successful of all teams at actually retaining the titles after the win them). Ray then thanked the fans for their support. Devon added: "Oh my brother, testify!" Ray shook Taz's hand. Taz said he wishes he would have told him as they had dinner together last night. Taz said he's sad to hear that, but he wonders if the Guns will accept the callenge. Taz said the Guns have nothing to gain. Tenay disagreed strongly, saying the Guns can't prove they're the best by going through life avoiding challenges. Things got pretty uncomfortable as Tenay and Taz seemed legitimately peeved at one another.
-A video package aired hyping the Lethal Lockdown match.
-Hemme interviewed Fortune backstage. She looked at Flair like no human could admire another human being more. It was like Hillary Clinton looking at Bill Clinton during the mid-'90s. A.J. Styles talked a little, then Flair let out a bunch of "whoos!"
7 -- EV2 (Tommy Dreamer & Sabu & Raven & Rhino & Stevie Richards w/Mick Foley) vs. FORTUNE (Kazarian & A.J. Styles & James Storm & Robert Roode & Matt Morgan w/Ric Flair) -- Lethal Lockdown
The match began at 9:54 with Kaz vs. Richards for the first five minutes. Some solid back and forth action, although they easily could have just made it two minutes at the start instead of five. Styles entered next to give the man-advantage to the heels. Dreamer entered to even the odds at 7:00. They did a four-way spot off the top rope which prompted chants of "TNA! TNA!" Dreamer bled from the forehead. Styles held his head against the cage as Roode from ringside punched him. Flair punched Dreamer through the camera hole. Roode entered next followed by Sabu and then Storm. Beer Money gave Sabu a double suplex, then gave Dreamer a double suplex.
Raven came in at 15:00. Taz said Raven is beginning to look like one of the Moondogs. Morgan entered next. It resembled a battle royal at this point. They showed Rhino awaiting eagerly his legal entrance to make it a five-on-five match. He finally entered and hit an early Gore on Storm, then played to the crowd. At that point the roof lowered over the top of the cage with weapons hanging from the roof. Flair and Foley began brawling at ringside as the roof lowered and the wrestlers positioned themselves to grab the most advantageous weapon. Richards threw Kaz through the cage door, ruining any sense that the cage was there to keep people inside and keep others outside.
Kaz climbed to the top of the cage. Stevie Richards met him up there. Kaz set up a Stevie for a throw of the roof, but Stevie escaped. Sabu dove through the open cage door and landed on Morgan. The crowd chanted, "This is awesome!" Taz said he senses something bad is going to happen. Tenay said no one will ever be the same after this match. Kaz climbed the ladder and set up a dive onto Stevie on a table on the roof. Brian Kendrick popped out from a box on the roof where he was hiding and stopped Kaz from hitting that move. Kendrick backdropped a bloodied Kaz onto and through the table on the roof. Back in the cage, Styles climbed to the top rope, but Dreamer hit him in the leg with a chair. Dreamer gave Styles the Dreamer Driver off the top rope onto a chair for the win. "Oh my God, what a car wreck this was!" said Taz.
WINNERS: EV2 in 24:00.
STAR RATING: ***1/4 -- Tough to grade as it was pure spectacle, with some stretches of random battle royal style brawling which gets a little mind-numbing after a while, but overall the pace was good enough and they delivered some big spots that didn't seem ridiculously legitimately dangerous.
-Hemme interviewed Angle backstage, who said he is focused on his match. He said whenever he's had to step up in his life, he's stepped up. He said he has to win the TNA Title tonight. He said wrestling is his livelihood and it's what he loves to do. He said he will walk out of the ring tonight champion. "And Hulk, this one's for you," he concluded.
-They cut back to the cage where Stevie was just getting up and crawling off the roof of the cage. They went to a music video previewing the three-way match. Taz and Tenay then did a Tale of the Tape segment.
8 -- MR. ANDERSON vs. KURT ANGLE vs. JEFF HARDY -- TNA World Heavyweight Title Tournament Final
Jeff Hardy's ring intro took place first. Mr. Anderson then introduced himself on the mic on the stage. Then Angle came out last. The match began at 10:33. Tenay said management made this match a no time limit, no disqualifications match. He threw that out there like it was an aside, although it's probably a key aspect of the upcoming finish. By 5:00 Angle had Hardy isolated in the ring with Anderson ailing at ringside from a Hardy dive.
At 6:00 Hardy missed with a flip dive onto Anderson. They showed Dixie Carter at ringside with her typical look of concern and consternation. Angle hit Anderson with a series of German suplexes. He followed up with Hardy. Angle put Hardy in the anklelock. Anderson broke it up. Angle took Anderson down and applied an anklelock on both men at once. They managed to power out and flip him over. Hardy and Anderson were slow to get up as they clutched their ankles. Angle climbed to the top rope, but Anderson met him up there and gave him his flip powerslam. When he made the cover, Hardy hit Anderson with a Swanton and scored a two count.
Hardy threw Anderson out of the ring. Angle countered a Twist of Fate attempt with an Angle Slam for a near fall. They cut to a live winding shot of the Ocean Center crowd. Angle caught Anderson on the top rope and suplexed him to the mat. Hardy tried to steal the pin with a cover of Anderson. Hardy gave Angle a Whisper in the Wind and then gave a Twist of Fate to Anderson. He signaled for the Twist of Fate, then hit Anderson with it for a near fall, broken up by Angle who put Hardy in an anklelock at 12:00. Hardy powered out and sent Angle into an Anderson Mic Check for a near fall.
Hardy broke up an Anderson roll up and went for a pin. Anderson powered out. Angle got up with both Hardy and Anderson down. He landed a moonsault off the top rope. Tenay said that should do it. It didn't. Hardy kicked out at 14:00. Anderson and Angle countered each other in rapid sequence. Angle went for a clothesline, but Anderson ducked and the ref went down. Anderson gave Angle a Mic Check. Both were slow to get up. Eric Bischoff walked to ringside with a chair in hand. Tenay did his "Whuhhtah?"
Bischoff stood over both men, but then Hulk Hogan's music played. Bischoff's jaw dropped. Taz said he's not here. Hogan showed up. Tenay said he is here as Hogan walked to the ring on crutches. Bobby Heenan chimed in and said, "But whose side is Hogan on anyway?" Bischoff began pleading from a distance for Hogan's forgiveness. Bischoff slid the chair out of the ring and wiped his hands as if to say that he didn't plan to do anything anyway. Hogan shoved his crutch at Bischoff's chest. Bischoff grabbed the crutch. Hardy rolled back into the ring and stepped between them. Bischoff and Hogan each held up a crutch. Hogan handed Hardy his crutch. Bischoff challenged Hardy to a duel. Angle struggled to his feet. Hardy turned and bashed Angle with the crutch. Bischoff handed Hardy his crutch and told him to finish him with a smile. Hogan and Bischoff smiled and hugged as Hardy hit Anderson across his back with a crutch. Hardy gave Anderson the Twist of the Fate. Bischoff dragged the ref over and the ref counted to three.
WINNER: Hardy in 19:00 to capture the TNA World Hvt. Title.
STAR RATING: *** -- Not a match of the year contender, but the action was often good and sometimes less than crisp leading up to the inevitable Big Angle finish which overshadowed everything in the match.
-Afterward, Jeff Jarrett and Abyss walked out and hugged Hardy and celebrated with Bischoff and Hogan. RVD ran out and asked Hardy what he was doing. Hardy hit RVD with the TNA Title belt. Tenay said we'll always remember 10-10-10 as the night Jeff Hardy made a deal with the Devil.
