Wake the pets and call the neighbors. It's time for our DGUSA internet pay-per-view preview column!
DISCLAIMER: Projections are made by myself and for myself with absolutely no assistance from Gabe Sapolsky or Sal "Rhymes With Amway" Hamaoui. Projections are not predictions, because this is the column where everything's made up, and the points don't count. No one knows the contents of these projections, but I, in my divine and mystical way, will ascertain the finishes to these matches despite not being caught up on my WWN/DGUSA/Evolve DVDs. Some of our departing contestants will receive a supply of Load Hugger cargo nets. Load Hugger keeps cargo in its place. Remember, this is only an exhibition. This is not a competition. Please, please, no wagering. This lineup is based on the best available information as of this writing.
WWNLive has put on a lot of shows over the past twelve months. This is the first live event that qualifies for "supershow" treatment because, well, look at the lineup. I mean, for crying out loud.
Before we get to our picks, let's do today's Wrestling History Lesson. Before Dragon Gate USA and Ring of Honor, the "number three promotion" in North America was the Philadelphia-based Extreme Championship Wrestling. The original ECW ran from 1993 through 2001. Among the many wrestlers who passed through ECW were Steve Austin, Mick Foley and the late Eddie Guerrero. A young Gabe Sapolsky worked for the company, as did ROH founder Rob Feinstein and legendary manager Jim Cornette.
But we're not here to talk about that. On April 15, 1995, Extreme Championship Wrestling presented one of its best cards ever, "ECW Hostile City Showdown 1995" at the ECW Arena in South Philadelphia. On this show, the late Eddie Guerrero defended the ECW Television Title against a member of the original Triple Threat, Dean Malenko. Good times. Joey Styles had the call.
Ten years ago, Total Nonstop Action wrestling was delivering some fun monthly pay-per-views, and fresh episodes of Impact on the regional Fox Sports Network. On the March 25, 2005 episode of TNA Impact, from Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, your main event saw NWA World Tag Team Champions Chris Harris and James Storm in action against Phi Delta Slam. Mike Tenay and Don West had the call.
As your free gift for viewing this column, let's take you back to September 14, 2014, and the "Evolve 35" event in Brooklyn, New York. Here's EVOLVE champion Drew Galloway in a non-title match against Roderick Strong. No, really. Lenny Leonard and Rob Naylor have the call.
Enough of that. Now on with the projections!
Caleb Konley & Brian Cage will beat...somebody in a bonus tag team match.
Mia Yim & The Kimber Bombs vs. Nikki Storm & The Canadian Ninjas.: Listen, it doesn't get much more Shimmer-riffic than this. Cherry Bomb & Mia Yim are about to take TNA by storm, and the Ninjas are always fun to watch. Projection? Fairfax County's favorite femme fatale finished off Perez with the Sky Yim to win a crowd-pleasing opener.
Biff Busick vs. Drew Gulak vs. T.J. Perkins vs. Tommy End (Four Way Fray): Yes, there are some good wrestlers who aren't on television. Only one of these four is due for a breakout victory. Projection? Tommy End surprises Gulak with a head kick to score the upset victory.
A.R. Fox vs. P.J. Black: Really? You're going to break in P.J. Black, fresh off of leaving WWE, with all of the hype and energy behind this new gimmick, and have him lose three nights in a row? (Actually, yes, I can see this happening.) Projection? Fox grabs the victory with the Lo Mein Pain. P.J. Black goes on to Japan, or TNA, or somewhere else.
Chris Hero vs. Timothy Thatcher: Rumor has it Thatcher is wrestling on every single WWN show this weekend, including dressing up as a luchador for the King of Indies tournament, then working the Shimmer show in drag. Projection? The K.O. Hero gets to rock the veteran with a few strikes, but the British Messiah gets the final word by making Hero tap to the Thatcher Stretch. This feud needs to continue for another eighteen months or so.
Generation Next (Austin Aries & Roderick Strong) vs. On Their Way Out (Ricochet & Uhaa Nation): You've heard of "once in a lifetime" matchups? I think this qualifies. Projection? Of the four wrestlers in this match, the priority has to be protecting Roderick Strong. The former ROH tag champs catch Mr. Nation with a brianbuster into Death by Roderick for a successful tag team reunion.
Johnny Gargano vs. Drew Galloway (Dragon Gate USA Title vs. EVOLVE Title): Since there's really only one major promotion left in the WWN Live universe, it's probably time to unify these two championships. And since only one of these wrestlers is exclusive to WWN, well... Projection? Ethan Page distracts Galloway, and Gargano catches Drew with the Hurtz Donut for the win. Gargano becomes the new WWN Unified Champion, then gets the crap beaten out of him by Conley, Cage and Page, who are the new and improved Premier Athletic Brand.
Aftermath: We go to Evolve 41 next month in Ybor City, with Konley & Nese defending the DGUSA Title against Rich Swann & TJ Perkins, plus another meeting between Roderick Strong and Davey Richards.
