Cameron M. of Ceres, Calif., student (8.5): Best Match: Cena/Orton vs. Batista/Swagger. Worst Match: Can you really say anything other than Divas? Obviously, this Raw had one major goal to honor one of the greatest wrestlers who has ever lived. And I believe they did an unbelievable job. Shawn Michaels's speech was a true heartfelt goodbye that was the perfect ending to arguably one of the greatest careers ever. Obviously we will see him again, and it would be lunacy for him not to be in the Hall of Fame next year. On to the other aspects of the show, I sadly have the worst feeling that Cody Rhodes will quickly become the next "Sim Snuka" or Manu, but I do believe Ted DiBiase is going to be a top guy sooner rather than later. On a side note, it was good to see the Hart Dynasty and Christian finally get some positive TV time. Hopefully Christian will be drafted to Smackdown where there will at least be more of an opening for him. My final two thoughts: firstly, the Divas. Remember the days when Lita would moonsault off the top rope and land on Trish Stratus and the crowd would just erupt? Now we get to see Vickie Guerrero getting a bigger push than half the roster.
Edward L. of Bangor, Maine: I really don't know that you could have asked for a better sendoff than that. It lacked the pomp and circumstance of Ric Flair's, but for several understandable reasons. It also pushed the door closed on a return, but Michaels didn't slam it and lock it. He thanked Bret, the fans, etc., and not in a remotely corny nor forced way at all. It's still a bit amazing to me that these two really have buried the hatchet after all these years, but it's fantastic that they did. He also thanked his Lord and savior, but did so in a brief and succinct way so as to not offend those who don't share his views. It really is pretty saddening. This is someone who's been on my television for most of my life, and is someone who in some way I have grown up with. I don't view this as any different than when my favorite "real" athletes decide to call it a day - in fact, if he holds true to his word, (and I'm now starting to believe that he just might) I actually view this in a more positive light than other athletes who call it a day due to injury, lack of interest, or who become wishy-washy days later (ahem Brett Favre ahem). This is a man who seems to be leaving on his own terms, and for all the right reasons. Even if he changes his mind sooner than later, well, that's probably okay too. "Closure" is a word that'll be thrown around a lot here in regards to Hart's return coinciding with Shawn's exit, but I think we all wanted some closure. Well played, WWE...and well played, Shawn. You will be missed.
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (n/a): Everything was incidental compared to Shawn saying good-bye. About the only start to Extreme Rules was the first salvo for Hunter-Sheamus and Cena-Batista. The tentative stare down between Cena and Orton was needed to keep on par with continuity of Randy's turn. Yes, folks, it's a turn, and this one looks like it will stick. Everything else the rest of the night was incidental--even the Harts-ShoMiz segment. As for Shawn Michaels retiring, the last time I cried this much of over anything that would be considered a loss in my lifetime was the night my mother died. I wasn't directly with her when I found out and never really got to say my goodbyes before she was buried due to the condition she was in when she passed away. I've never met Shawn Michaels in person, and only seen him live at an event just twice. But at least I can say thank you for 25 great years through the good, the bad, and ugly. Michaels looked at peace with leaving and I'm cool with that. And if you're not down with that, I've got six words for you: "Enjoy your life. You deserve it."
