-- 3/28 WWE WrestleMania 26 Reax
Julian Mazur, Retail manager: That was the best WWE could manage for the greatest PPV of the year? I'd say I'm disappointed, but I've come to expect that from WWE of late. The whole performance felt like Raw. Ignoring the HBK-Taker match, the best match went to Batista-Cena (not best result). There weren't any mistakes I noticed and even though I expected a long, drawn out botch-a-mania, the match flowed well, didn't drag out, and was actually interesting to watch. I got a laugh out of all the Cena hate, particularly the six guys with 'We Hate Cena' shirts. John posing with them at the end put a nice human touch onto it, kind of like John saying 'I know most people over 12-years-old can't stand me, but I'm doing a job.' I think worst match easily goes to Hart vs. McMahon. Y2J vs. Edge and Punk vs. Rey were massive letdowns. All technical, gifted, fast wrestlers and their matches seemed like they were scripted badly so it didn't outshine other matches. They had their moments, but definitely not at a WrestleMania level. Triple H vs. Sheamus was a match that should have been on Raw as well as Orton vs. Legacy. Hopefully both those angles are over now and WWE will move on. Taker vs. HBK was good. I don't think it was a fitting send-off for one of the best in the business, but obviously Shawn agreed to it, so who am I to judge? Both guys tried really hard to put on a good match and I think they succeeded. It wasn't great, but it was good.
Matt G. of SLC, Utah (7.5): Best Match: Michaels vs. Undertaker. Worst Match: Divas Tag match. After reading all the interviews leading up to Mania, I wasn't shocked by the outcome of Michaels-Taker, but that doesn't mean I feel great as a wrestling fan with the outcome. Of course, this is pro wrestling and Michaels may not be "retired," but what if he is? Wrestling fans throughout the world should be in mourning with the loss of truly one of the greatest performers of all time. Michaels was the heart and soul of the WWE for the past 20 years and he is someone I've followed since I was a kid. I have mixed feelings about WWE's future without one of its veteran anchors. The art of in-ring storytelling is quickly becoming lost in the new WWE. I hope this isn't goodbye for good.
Kenny B. of Kokomo, Ind. (8.0): Best Match: HBK-Undertaker. Worst Match: Divas match. This was my first PPV purchase, simply because I have been a fan of Shawn Michaels my entire life. If this truly was HBK's last match, it deserved to be the main event on the stage that is synonymous with Shawn Michaels. My friends and I were yelling at the TV when Undertaker teased the suicide dive, remembering last year's scare. I was shocked that Shawn hit the moonsault, even if it was a little off. Even if the match couldn't compete with last year's in a technical sense, it was still a success in keeping me (and my friends who NEVER watch wrestling) on the edge of my seat. As far as the other matches, I felt like I was watching just any other PPV. I will give credit to Cena-Batista, which surprised me since I went into that with very low expectations. I still can't stand Michael Cole's announcing. Without JR there to add to the excitement, and the short time allotted to many of the other matches, everything else just fell flat.
Mike Carrier of Anchorage, Alaska (8.0): Best Match: Career vs. The Streak. Worst Match - Anytime the women wrestle. The opening tag team match was ok, but R-Truth & Morrison do NOT make a great tag team. The spot with Morrison hitting the enziguiri on Big Show from the turnbuckle was cool, however. Morrison needs to stay a singles wrestler, though. Orton vs. Legacy was just okay, but I didn't get the sense it ever got out of first gear. MITB was cool and I liked the innovative spot with Kofi using the broken ladders to walk across the ring. Funny. Swagger winning was surprising, but deserved. Triple H vs. Sheamus was incredible. Sheamus deserved to be at WrestleMania this year and he put on his best performance yet. Punk vs. Mysterio had the feel good match of the night and I thoroughly enjoyed that. Hart vs. McMahon was disturbing. The last minute storyline switch at the beginning with the Hart Family swerve didn't add anything. The fans weren't into it either. Too bad, it could've been much better. Cena vs. Batista was one of the better matches on the PPV, with the crowd reactions making the match that much better. Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker was by far the best match of the night. It was too bad to see Shawn retire, but the ending was great with Undertaker offering his respect, and Shawn soaking in the fans's cheers and respect. Let's hope they give Shawn a great send off on Raw tonight.
Lee Beatty of St. Louis, Mo.: Best Match: Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels. Worst Match: Sad Divas. Honorable Mention: WWE's website practically giving away the result of the "Big Match" by announcing that Michaels was "at peace" and "comfortable" with retirement. As far as WrestleManias go, this was up there with some of the best. For any longtime WWE fan, they should know that not every match is going to be five stars, but the wrestlers and WWE in general do their best to make the night special. I am pleased that "all the right people" won tonight. I was hoping to see more out of the Divas, but with "only" four hours to operate, you get what you got. Maryse vs. Beth Phoenix would be interesting as a "next step" in women's wrestling, but I honestly am less than pleased with Maryse in the ring. Going against the grain, I actually like Ms. "Excuse Me!" Vickie Guerrero. I was happy to see her get a moment. I have much respect for those that endure weeks of humiliation without complaint. ... R-Truth and John Morrison, The Brothers Bromance, are a potentially great team, but they aren't ready just yet. Orton and Legacy should be free of each other now, so we'll see where they head. I suspect the odd man out may be Cody "How Come I Don't Have A Movie?" Rhodes. Thankfully, Rey Mysterio won, as we've seen the unwilling employee/slave angle too many times. Chris Jericho had his hand raised, but we all know that Edge will wear gold very soon. Money In The Bank? I thought it was Shelton Benjamin's year, but I actually like Jack Swagger, so this could get really interesting in a hurry. Sheamus did not disgrace himself in losing, and we know he'll be back for a championship match soon. Hart vs. McMahon was "predictable," although it was a decent match. The Hart Dynasty was a surprise. I hope their "punishment" will be a run after the Undisputed tag titles against MizShow. Undertaker vs. Michaels? That was another great match, one that should be seen several times to truly appreciate what the "old guys" bought to the table. Every wrestler that wants to perform on the big stage and have a Memorex moment should what these gents two WrestleMania matches. And finally, why does everyone rag on Michael Cole? Maybe he's not Jim Ross, but who else qualifies? He and Lawler did a commendable job last night, not perfect, but they held their own. In closing, I just ask that Michaels stays retired and (please!) not end up on the "retread" pile in TNA.
