-- 3/28 WWE WrestleMania 26 Reax
Liza Montgomery (live perspective at WrestleMania): I have no idea how this all came out on TV, but I was at WrestleMania and here's what I thought of the matches and crowd reactions. ShoMiz vs. Morrison and R-Truth (6.0). Triple Threat match (9.0): Face Orton is fun to cheer for and thank goodness Legacy is gone. Crowd was hot for Orton. Money in the Bank Ladder match. (7.0): Fun match and most everyone was into it except when Swagger won. Triple H vs. Sheamus (6.0): Meh. Not much of a crowd reaction. C.M. Punk vs. Rey (8.0): Heel Punk is great and Rey is always fun to watch. The kids all love him. Bret vs. Vince No Holds Barred (2.0): they had to dig deep for this one. Aside from an awesome performance by Vince, who proved he would do almost anything for the company and for his wrestlers, the match itself was mediocre. Glad this whole thing is over and hopefully we don't have to hear about the Montreal Screwjob ever again. It's way in the past. The crowd loved the violence more than the match itself. Vince got a well-deserved warm reception and Bret, of course, got a nice pop too. Jericho vs. Edge (8.0): These guys are always fun to watch. Divas Match (2.0): just dumb. The Divas deserve better booking. Batista vs. Cena (8.0): I actually wanted Cena to win and the crowd seemed half-and-half cheering each guy during the match. Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels (8.0): The Streak thing is starting to get old. It will be interesting to see how the handle breaking it. Anyway, the crowd was white hot for this one and it was what everyone was talking about when we left.
Sergio H. of Phoenix, Ariz. (8.0): Best Match: Michaels-Taker. Worst: Divas. Seeing it live was worth the dough, but the ring mic was hissing all night and it was tough to hear the counts and bumps even as close as the floor. The Legacy triple threat was very well done and Orton's mannerisms get a great reaction from the crowd. Lowering the graphics into the ring looked spectacular as well. MITB was excellent, but I wonder if Christian regrets leaving TNA where they actually let him run with the ball. Christian seemed like the most exciting choice to win, but maybe the writers feel that Swagger has paid some dues. Triple H would not have been hurt by a loss here and would have catapulted Sheamus, but at least now he has some experience under his belt. Did Hunter go tanning with Darren Young? He was an unhealthy shade of red. Jericho beating Edge is great to legitimize his heel character and the crowd was buzzing to see if Swagger would cash in his briefcase after Edge speared Jericho. ... Even though everyone knew Super-Cena would win the WWE Title match, it was a fun match. Skilled or not, Cena can carry around a 300-pound man with no problem. The best part was that Big Dave still looked like a BA when he calmly and gently tapped out. Am I the only one who didn't like the Taker-HBK ending? The "go on and do it already" finish didn't sit right and I would have rather seen a reversal or better-contested pin. I know it was a reference to Ric Flair's last WM, but it just seemed like Michaels gave up. Not as good as last year, but pretty darn close.
Henry Jenkins of Seattle, Wash. (8.0): Best Match: HBK-Undertaker II. Worst Match: Divas tag. I had a great night at the stadium on Sunday night. I thought it was better than in Houston last year, but not as good as in Orlando the year before. I was shocked but pleased that Jack Swagger won Money in the Bank. Well deserved! It was very emotional seeing Bret Hart again and I was happy that he got to give something to The Hart Dynasty and Dean. If you read his book, he'd begged Vince for years to sign Dean. C.M. Punk was a star in the six minutes he had. Undertaker-HBK II did not quite live up to the original. For me, it was merely spectacular. Not the single all time best. ... There were flaws with the show. The crowd was not as hot as the show deserved. Partly I think they were saving their voices for the main events, so much so that the rest of the card suffered. But I also found it hard to cheer because that mood is contagious. Also, as emotional as I felt about the Bret Hart match, the actual action was too one-note. Several of the matches - the tag titles in particular - got robbed on time. Meanwhile, Triple H-Sheamus and Cena-Batista seemed to have too many rest holds. Overall, a really fun show, but not perfect.
Michelangelo Lobato of Los Alamos, N.M., Community Health Council Program Coordinator/future law student (7.5): Best Match: Michaels vs. Taker. Worst Match: Divas tag. The HBK-Taker match was a very good match, but I don’t think it lived up to their first epic WrestleMania encounter. I was also disappointed that HBK did not win the match, as a rubber match would have not only been historic, but a moneymaker for WWE. They could have put both their careers on the line next year. HBK has spent his entire career making others look good, and I thought this was the time to make Michaels look good. In my opinion, Taker has not made others look strong during his whole WWE career (and people complain about Hogan!). Cena vs. Batista really was the second best match of the night. For being two individuals not known for their wrestling skills, they put on a classic match. Rey-Punk and Jericho-Edge were both high-energy, well-wrestled matches. I can’t really say much for the rest of the card. I thought Hunter-Sheamus was lackluster, MITB was the worst MITB that they've had, and the rest of the card was very forgettable.
