WrestleMania Reax #4: "Cena vs. Batista exceeded my expectations and they put on a very good match"

Bobby J. of Sacramento, Calif., musician (9.5): Best Match: HBK vs. Taker. Worst: Santino/Slim Jim ad. This was damn near perfect. HBK-Taker was just awesome, even eclipsing last year's match. The worst "match" was the Divas ten-person match, but Vickie G. gets the most heat out of anyone on the roster, and seeing the frog splash and 'Eddie Strut' was great. Say what you will about Hart-Vince, but as a friend said, they still moved faster than Hogan-Flair. If you wear a 'We Hate Cena' t-shirt to a Cena match, then you're a Cena mark. Cena mugging with the anti-fans after the match made me like him even more. No backstage segments save the Slim Jim ad, no celebrities, and a solid card with solid matches made for one of the best WrestleMania events I remember. I liked every single match on the card and felt this was money well spent.

Bryan Lynch of Denver, Colo. (5.0): Best Match: Undertaker-HBK. Worst: Divas tag. Ugh. I've spent $90 over the last week on two PPVs, and I'd like to at least have half of it back. This show was a letdown on many levels. The Unified tag title match was over before it even got started. The Legacy triple threat just wasn't very good. Orton was way over with the crowd, so that helped somewhat, but Rhodes and DiBiase just have zero heat. This match followed the exact same punch-kick-resthold-repeat formula that plagued the Hunter-Sheamus match. The ladder match was okay, but after watching Destination X just last week, I think TNA just does these kinds of matches better. It's funny how people complain about X Division matches looking choreographed, but go gaga over this match every year when most of the spots require two or three guys holding the ladder for two others to pull anything off. I'm not big on Swagger winning, but at least it wasn't Drew McIntyre or Dolph Ziggler. Hunter-Sheamus was a typical slow, boring WWE-style match with one or two moves and the rest filled with punches, kicks, and restholds. Punk and Rey had a very good match. If given more time, it could have been really special. I ordered this primarily to see Bret's return, and while I was okay with the beatdown on Vince, having the whole Hart family there was unnecessary and took away from the match. Jericho and Edge wasn't bad, but it was just flat. Edge just isn't cut out to be a babyface, and he's right back to where he was prior to 2005. He needs to be a heel. Cena vs. Batista exceeded my expectations, and the two put on a very good match. It really is time for the 18-35 male crowd to get over themselves. I know they think they're cool by booing Cena, but he has improved tremendously and deserves the spot he has. Taker-HBK was, of course, very good, but it didn't live up to expectations. I just couldn't get into what was supposed to be an emotional ending to the show because nobody can possibly think HBK's retirement will last. Overall, very disappointing show. Cena-Batista and Taker-HBK were both very good, but not enough to save the show for me. I certainly didn't feel like I got my $55 worth.

Jamie Edginton of Lowell, Mass. (9.0): Best Match: Undertaker vs. Michaels II. Worst Match: Divas. The 9.0 is for the epic Undertaker-Michaels match. Everything was fine except the Divas match, which to me was disrespectful to Eddie Guerrero's memory. I am one of the only people I know that likes the Women's division, but seriously, what was that? The MITB finish was unexpected. I would have said that Matt Hardy had a better chance, but good for Swagger. He will be the first MITB possessor not to win the title, though. Rey-Punk and the tag title match were fine, but needed more time. Hunter-Sheamus was good. I'm not a Sheamus fan, but he did well for his first time out there. I think we all built up Edge-Jericho in our minds as being the next Savage-Steamboat. The match was good, not great. Cena winning was expected, and as an anti-Cena fan, I gained respect for him by posing with the anti-fans. He loves the business, you can tell. And Michaels-Taker II, what can you say? I was buying into every false-finish and was really hoping against hope that Michaels would win. As a 25-year wrestling fan and having been witness to Shawn Michaels entire career, it was an emotional night. I truly believe that Shawn will be one of the few to keep his word and never wrestle again. I lost respect for Ric Flair and I don't think we'll see it happen twice.

Kemble Reyburn of Chippewa Falls, Wis. (2.5): Best Match: Cena vs. Batista. Worst Match: Money in the Bank. I watch WWE twice a year: for the Rumble and for Mania. I feel the product has become sloppy and too predictable, so it's just not worth more of my time. MITB has gotten to the level where it's hardly enjoyable anymore because there is no build-up. Two guys beat each other up, one guy climbs up, another guy comes up from his extended break outside of the ring to push him off the ladder, then another guy comes in, rinse repeat. Kofi using the ladders as stilts was probably the dumbest thing of the night when there was another ladder in the corner that he could have used. Punk vs. Mysterio was fine. I give the card a full point for that match simply because it worked and was the first time there was a finishing sequence that actually flowed well and didn't involve someone waiting like an idiot for someone to do a move. But who could forget how just unbelievably terrible the Bret vs. Vince match was? Worst "double screwjob" ever. That segment was not "excellently executed." It looked like the crowd popped for the Sharpshooter because they knew the match would finally end. It's amazing how the crowd was practically lifeless until the Edge / Jericho match. Batista vs. Cena was good because the crowd was into it and there were some decent reversals. Props to both guys for actually doing some moves that were legitimate shows of strength. Cena posing with the crowd with the "We hate Cena" shirts was epic and made me like him a little bit more. Michaels vs. Undertaker was fine, but it bothered me they moved it to after the championship matches. I guess they learned from least year, eh? I thought it really made Michaels look weak begging Undertaker to finish him off, trying to drum up drama like with Ric Flair. If Michaels really is going to retire, at least we can all remember that his last "move" ever was a slap.
