WWE Superstars Reax #1: "The Randy Orton Superstar video sold the PPV more effectively than anything else I've seen" Oct 2, 2009 - 12:47:03 AM
Justin James of Columbia, S.C., IT professional/author (6.0): Best Match: Kingston-Miz. Worst Match: None. This episode of Superstars was really lacking on the booking side of things. All of the matches were well done and appreciated. But the booking was awful. Tyson Kidd desperately needed a singles victory to keep The Hart Dynasty credible and Cryme Tyme is over enough with the fans to afford taking a loss. Rex-Sheamus was a decent match, but what story did it tell - that Sheamus could dominate Tyler Reks? Tyler Reks hasn't won a singles match in a very, very long time. Meanwhile, his character is completely undefined. So what do we get? A decent match of Reks selling for Sheamus, who is already well over as a heel. There needs to be a talking segment every few weeks with Reks to build up his character. I don't want to see WWE give up on Tyler Reks just because they fed him a poorly developed character concept. The fact is he's a 270 lb. man doing springboard moves. That's what I call "talent." WWE should be using him properly. Maybe team him up with Goldust or Shelton Benjamin and get them into a quest for the tag titles? The Kingston-Miz match was well done with the right ending. Kingston hasn't won a match in a while, it feels like. I'm predicting that Miz walks home with the gold on Sunday, thanks to seeing Swagger stand tall tonight and get a win on Monday and Kingston winning tonight. What this match had in the ring was killed outside of the ring. Lawler and Cole spent more time gushing over DX than calling the match. How are we supposed to think that the match is important if the announcing team doesn't bother to announce it? Like ECW this week, Superstars suffered from having far too much PPV hype. Let the matches and stories sell the PPV, not the video packages please. I must say, the Randy Orton Superstar focus video was well done. It sold the PPV more effectively than anything else I've seen. Indeed, those videos on Superstars do more for WWE that most of their other videos! I'd like to see them incorporated into Raw, Smackdown, and ECW in lieu of the normal videos.
-- 9/29 ECW TV Reax
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (9.0): Best: Christian/Yoshi/Dreamer/Goldust vs. Regal/Jackson/Kozlov/Ryder. Worst: is the AW Show a parody? I am disappointed that for some reason ECW was left off the PPV card. But again, like with Morrison-Ziggler at Breaking Point, it would have been thrown together without a solid build toward it. But fear not, true believers, because some nice build was to be found in this episode. It has been mentioned enough times in recent weeks about Regal's past GM experience that it made sense he was named interim GM. I also liked the stip follow-up that Regal couldn't book to directly affect the ECW title. He went for an apparent loophole that he could book against the champion, though, so that made sense. If the Abraham Washington Show felt out of place before, it really felt so this time. Why were Morrison and Ziggler on ECW TV? For that matter where was Helms/Hurricane? The Helms-Burchill feud seems to be moving further off to the side lately. Judging by the way Ryder conducted himself on the show, there looks to be a three-way on the horizon. Ryder got slighted at the end despite a hard-fought loss against Christian. There's some territorial thing happening between Regal and Ryder over who has the right to take on Christian for the title. As long as a segment covering the ECW Title storyline isn't left out in the cold at the PPV, it was wise to let it breathe and wait for Bragging Rights. Could a vote be in order there, even if it's not totally Cyber Sunday anymore?
