ECW TV Reax #1: "Would it be possible for a high-flying rivalry between Air Bourne and the Hurricane?" Apr 29, 2009 - 10:10:07 AM
A.A. Norman of Tulsa, Okla. (10.0): I enjoyed this show from start to finish. Yes, even Vladimir Kozlov had some character development last night. Here in Oklahoma last week, a member of the band Flaming Lips was publicly scrutinized for wearing a communist symbol shirt to the state Capitol, so what better way for a heel to make people not like him than to wear a military outfit in front of a communist symbol? I was happy for the New York fans and Tommy Dreamer that he got an ECW Title match, even if it ended in DQ. The Tyson Kidd vs. Finlay bout was also good for both wrestlers. As for Evan Bourne and Gregory Helms, would it be possible for a high-flying rivalry between Air Bourne and the Hurricane?
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (8.0): Best: Kidd vs. Finlay. Worst: Kozlov promo. In a world of highspots, quick matches, and multiple package replays, ECW went with a simple game plan. Aside from the Backlash general highlight reel, everything else was ECW-related. The opening promo did a nice job of a lot of things: getting a glimpse of Christian's, Dreamer's, and Swagger's mentalities in the aftermath of the PPV; plugging the main event for the show; setting up the Judgment Day match; getting the TV crowd up to speed on the Tommy Dreamer storyline (which had fallen by the wayside). Hornswoggle has been drafted to Raw and his entrance music should have gone with him. Finlay's entrance music would do him fine enough. The Kidd-Finlay match did a lot to put Tyson back on track after he was seemingly falling through the cracks. I would like to know why they're feuding, aside from the match on Superstars last week. And I did like the turnabout with Finlay getting the shillelagh shot. Someone was bound to do it sometime, though I do wonder why it took so long. Bourne can deliver a decent promo, but he shouldn't need to rely on cue cards; nothing that more promo time and practice can't try to fix. The Bourne-Burchill promo nicely set up their Superstars match. Gregory Helms must still be on the shelf, but he can handle the goods as an interviewer. This will give Bourne and others on ECW some promo time. Dreamer-Christian, while it was okay, just never got out of first gear. It was a clear give-away of Swagger's incoming disruption. The non-finish may lead to Dreamer being booked on the PPV in a three-way to play out what happened tonight. About the only thing missing from the show was actually naming the new additions to ECW, as Raw did the night before.
