Art "Bucky" Blarr of Buffalo, N.Y. (9.0): Best Match: Jericho vs Punk. Worst Match: Kingston vs Manu. I never like to give above an 8.5 rating, but this was one of the best Raws of the year and I was entertained from start to finish. The only real weak point of the show was watching JBL in the ring. Since he broke into the WWE with his long hair, it seems he's had one dream and that is to be the new Stan Hansen, but after 12 years of trying, he still can't lace up Hansen's boots. Randy Orton cut one hell of a promo, which kept my interest. I thought Mickie & Melina were great as a tag team. I loved Jillian singing with a British accent for Layla. I felt the intensity of Jericho vs. Punk right from the start of the match and knew it was going to be something special, which it was. I had a feeling Trish was going to be Cena's partner, but it was still great seeing her in action and I hope she gives it one more run because I would love to see her and Beth feud.
Sam Weiss, of San Diego, Calif. (8.5): Best match: Regal vs. Punk, and the various divas on the show. Worst match: none could be called bad, but there were some messy parts to the Kingston match. First and foremost, the divas tonight stole the show. In the main event...Stratus vs. Phoenix ...wow, what a pair. The earlier diva tag match was good too; it is always a joy to see either Melina or Mickie, and to see them together was great. The hard-to-believe moments of late on Raw have come from the new HBK storyline - who really believes Michaels is in financial trouble? Here is one way to sell it: have Shawn explain that he was swindled out of half of his savings by Bernard Madoff, and that the other half of his savings was invested into WWE stock he bought a couple of years ago when the price was about $19/share, and that he had to sell the stock this past November when the WWE stock price crashed below $10/share, thus losing half his value in WWE stock! Finally, it is beginning to look like we will have (yet another) Cena vs. JBL match at the Royal Rumble - not something I look forward to.
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (5.0): Best: Orton promo; Jericho vs. Punk (despite crowd); Hunter-HBK promo. Worst: Melina/Mickie vs. Jillian/Layla; Kofi vs. Manu. The Bizarro World was alive and well tonight for both WWE and Canada. Orton did a fantastic job drawing heat through his promo, but the Canadian crowd made him a huge babyface for it. High Kudos to Punk for dealing with the extremely pro-Jericho crowd and coming through with a good match. My only quibble is that Punk has yet to get something in return for putting Jericho over three times now. Trish Stratus looked to be in great shape, and still very smooth in the ring. She needs a good hairstylist, though, then she would be juts fine. The way things worked in the end, if Trish's good vibe can't rub off on John Cena, Cena could be a lost cause even if he turns heel any time soon. The Michaels-JBL feud was completely screwed up tonight, Canadian crowd notwithstanding. Even for the heelish thing Shawn would do in the JBL-Rey match, he's still not a heel. Putting in the Hunter-HBK promo needed to be done to clear up what is in Shawn's head, but it clouded the feud later in the show. For it to be a true heel turn, JBL needed to do a "quid pro quo" for Shawn in his match with Kane, possibly leading to Shawn laying down for JBL in the four-way match. In the JBL-Rey match, the match should have been called for Shawn blocking the 619 and NOT for the slap. This begs a continuity question: why did Vickie's blocking of the 619 back at the 2008 Royal Rumble not constitute the same result? The crowd response was fittingly bizarre: they booed Shawn pulling JBL out of the path of the 619, but cheered the slap. I love the Canadian passion, but they ruined my enjoyment.
