TNA Impact Reax #2: "Foley's opening pep talk with the TNA Originals last night came off really uninspired."

Sam Saunders Chicago, Ill. (8.0): Best match: Sting vs. Jay Lethal. Worst match: Kong/Khan vs. Wilde/Roxxi. Foley's opening pep talk with the TNA Originals last night came off really uninspired, to the point of being a bit embarrassing. Also, I wouldn't get too excited about Eric Young's win over Sheik Abdul Bashir for the X-Division title as I very, seriously doubt that decision will stand given the circumstances with the ref. That would be a bit too ridiculous even for the often topsy turvy world of TNA booking. I enjoyed Angle's commentary during the Scott Steiner vs. Rhino bout and got a good laugh from seeing him jump up mid-sentence for the inevitable interference. It should be noted that Angle declared himself founder and leader of the Main Event Mafia during the commentary. ... Sting versus Jay Lethal was a solid little match with Lethal showing he has what it takes to become a future main eventer. The rather stiff beat down Christian Cage suffered at the hands of the MEM came off well and effectively closed the chapter on Cage's TNA tenure, as he is of course rumored to be heading to WWE. Sting was not present during the encounter leading me to wonder once again just how long his association with the MEM is going to last. The fact that Sting has aligned himself with a heel faction but is not taking part in the more extreme heel antics of the group lends depth to the angle, as does the tension between the Motor City Machine Guns and the other TNA originals.

Brian Harmon of Saint Paul, Minn. (3.0): I made my typical bi-monthly attempt to watch TNA last night, and as always, they failed to keep my attention. But they appear to have turned an odd corner since the last time I tried to watch. It now seems almost impossible to care in the slightest about anyone on their roster. There are no real babyfaces on this show. There aren't really any heels, either. Tenay kept talking about the Main Event Mafia going four-for-four at the last PPV in the same way someone might talk about John McEnroe or Pete Sampras if they happened to steal a set from Roger Federer in a recent match. A better analogy might be to suggest that the Main Event Mafia is akin to assembling a Ryder Cup team with Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Ben Crenshaw and Johnny Miller. Every one is a great star, but would anyone actually expect them to be able to compete with the best in the world today? Note to TNA: Nobody cares about who respects who in the locker room. We care about who can convincingly win matches against the best competition the world has to offer. The MEM has no credibility in that respect. It's fine to have these guys on the card, but they're too old to be on top of it. While I like the notion of Samoa Joe and A.J. Styles fighting to restore respectability to the promotion, they have been portrayed as buffoons and whiners for so long that they don't have much credibility. TNA has largely squandered the incredible talents of both of these men. It would probably be best for each of them to move on.
