TNA PPV Reax 5 Yrs. Ago: "I am glad that Styles got the pinfall over Lex. He looks like he has aged 10 years since 2000." Nov 13, 2008 - 3:34:46 PM
The following is the original batch of TNA feedback from the TNA Wednesday night weekly PPV event five years ago this week which featured the return of Lex Luger to the national scene. Read more about Luger's return in the latest "Five Years Ago" back issue of the Pro Wrestling Torch Newsletter just republished in its entirety in PDF format and online text format exclusively for PWTorch VIP members...
Joe Castellanos of Virginia Beach, Va. (7.5): Best Match: Christopher Daniels vs. Low Ki. Worst Segment: Erik Watts interview. I order NWA-TNA PPVs sporadically - depending on who is going to be on my work schedule and budget. I ordered the one year anniversary show, the Penny PPV, and a few others since they started. I admit that I was curious about the event when I saw that Lex Luger was gonna be on the card, but the Low Ki vs. Fallen Angel match was the reason I decided to order the event. They put on a decent match, but the crowd seemed underwhelmed by the match. The crowd seemed into Raven and A. J. Styles. I am glad that Styles got the pinfall over Lex. He looks like he has aged 10 years since 2000. I imagine his life has been terrible since the passing of Elizabeth. This PPV seemed tighter than other TNA PPVs I have ordered. The action rarely stopped and each segment blended into the next. Also, the new entrances for the wrestlers look really good, specifically Sting's and Raven's good stuff. Also, it seems like the promotion has dropped (for the most part) the comedy attempts of other PPVs. This was a serious old school wrestling PPV from start to finish. I hope casual fans tuned in to see Lex and stay because of the other talent and the improved production. I like the Blackhole slam, but Abyss looks like a cross between Mankind and Kane, not to mention his "unpredictable nature." I really want NWA-TNA to succeed. The WWE is okay, but I like other options also.
Matt Pelkey of Columbus, Ohio (4. 5): Best match: Lo-Ki vs. Christopher Daniels. Worst match: Tag Gauntlet. It's been over a year since I've ordered NWA-TNA and all I have to say is, eh. Nothing special. Even the best match wasn't all that great. I've seen those two in ten matches against each other better than that one. The tag gauntlet bored me. Two people who pleasantly surprised me were Sandman and Sting. Sandman will never be A. J. Styles, but I figured he'd be embarrassing himself in the ring by this point in his career. Not so. He held his own just fine. I was very happy to see Sting can still bring it in the ring as well. The big knock on him has always been his lack of passion, but he looks like he's having fun. Man, did Luger ever suck. He bumped maybe once and it was on the receiving end of Sting's offense, not A.J. 's. Smart booking there. Everything else just was kinda there. I'll give TNA one more chance, but I can't justify dropping ten bucks for something that isn't as good as the average Smackdown.
Brian "Demolition Man" Little of Ham Lake, Minn. (9.5): Yes you see my score correctly - a NINE POINT FIVE. I really enjoyed every single match on tonight's show from the opening Gauntlet Match for the no. 1 contendership for the NWA Tag Titles to the two X Division matches to, yes, even the main event. The best match of the evening however belongs to Christopher Daniels vs. Low Ki. Amazing match, it's on my LONG list for Match Of The Year contender. Oh, and the main event. The buildup of Jarrett and his goons taunting A. J. with "you're not at our level" only made me more hyped to see A.J. and Sting win the match. Even with Lex Luger involved (and as slow as he is), tonight's TNA is very memorable. As I've been saying, TNA continues to be the best thing since sliced bread!
Hank Schaller of Lapeer, Mich. - Torch subscriber (5.0): My curiosity got the best of me and I bought the NWA-TNA pay-per-view mostly just to see how the promotion would handle the past problems of Lex Luger and how the Total Package would perform in the ring. Like I wrote in the VIP Forum, Luger, never a great worker, is even worse now and even Boris Karloff as Frankenstein would have a more convincing in ring style. If any good came out of this match, it was that they allowed A.J. Styles to pin Luger. The Gauntlet match between the tag teams was okay, right up to the screwjob finish. I also enjoyed the match between Christopher Daniels and Low Ki, but not as much as I thought I would. Please, Jeff Jarrett get rid of the red shirt security gimmick, it just isn't working.
