WWE ECW Reax #1: "Wow, I can't remember the last time I was happy and entertained by ECW." Jul 23, 2008 - 2:30:23 PM
A.A. Norman of Tulsa, Okla. (9.0) Best: The main event (duh); Honorable mention: Evan Bourne's Shooting Star Press; Worst: Adamle continues to mess up. It would be a 10, just in honor of another good Bourne match and the outstanding main event if it weren't for Adamle. I still enjoy Colin Delaney as a jobber, so it's refreshing to have him be a jobber to hate instead of a jobber to love. Everyone had outstanding promos (although Ricky Ortiz needs a little work) - even Tony Atlas. The main event was arguably the best television match we've seen so far this year (although Ric Flair sending McMahon through a table was fun). If only, if only there was no Mike "Even from Heaven" Adamle. Ugh.
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (9.0) Best: Four-Way Worst: Not much bad tonight. ECW made themselves pretty proud tonight. Tony Atlas's diction and grammar notwithstanding, tonight's show was well focused, got its likely only match for SummerSlam set strongly, and really didn't fall on its face even once. Colin Delaney gave about the only explanation there was to give for his turn - getting tired of being beaten. He did play off of Raw's Rhodes/DiBiase "out with the old, in with the new" as well, only to be snookered by two others who would have been classified as old had they been faces. Tommy Dreamer's squash of Delaney fit its purpose of giving Dreamer some heat back as well as teach Delaney a lesson about appreciation. Followup on Delaney will be interesting to see. The Chavo-Evan feud took another good step. Bam Neely just seems so out of place with this. Ricky Ortiz is in an unusual place, and one that's cool to see: he's got the cockiness of a heel, but the demeanor of a face. If WWE is setting this up to actually let the crowd decide which side of the fence he's on and develop his character from there, then that's actually a rather new and a neat idea. Mike Knox just doesn't impress me, but at least the video tried to make him look like a big deal. The promos leading to the four-way made the match feel like a big deal to each of them and get a quick look at each person and how they see themselves, their opponents, and the opportunity ahead. The match itself was very good, and I loved the multiple and different nearfall sequences. Matt winning was fairly expected, but the match did look like anyone could have gotten the duke at any time. I just dread the title match itself as no matter who won has to deal with Mark Henry, enough said.
Alex O'keefe of Orlando, Florida (9.5): Best match: Fatal-Four Way for an ECW Championship shot at Summerslam. Worst match: Colin Delany vs. Tommy Dreamer, Introduction of the New ECW Championship. ECW actually had a really good episode. I was entertained the entire way through. I actually liked it more than Raw. Every segment worked, every one was entertaining. I liked the segment between Morrison and Miz; they had great chemistry and I loved the dynamic between them. They each put the other other over while hinting betrayal. The tension between Miz and Morrison was great in the main event. I cannot wait till they feud. I'm hoping for an Extreme Rules Match at a PPV. Evan Bourne continues to amaze and is quickly challenging Rey Mysterio's title as the greatest high-flyer in WWE. Adamle was... well... he sucked, but hey if he sucks so much that I actually laugh out loud then I guess I can deal with him for the time being.Wow, I can't remember the last time I was happy and entertained by ECW. But, there was one thing I didn't like. The unveiling of the new ECW Championship. At first I thought it was a ECW Crusierweight Championship, I almost peed my pants when I saw the new title, but I was very upset when I found out it was a new ECW World Title. It looks like crap. The new title really looks like it belongs in a indy fed. Old ECW officially died in it's birthplace tonight with the announcement of this generic looking championship. But I have to say, one con must be a record for a WWE show. ECW stepped up its game this week at its hometown, and for that I must applaud them.
