WWE ECW Reax #1: "Poor Chris Harris was left to his own devices to try and make his debut match worth something." Jul 9, 2008 - 10:48:15 AM
Dan Strauss of Goodhue, Minn. (5.0): Best: Much more wrestling than Raw. Worst: No real direction of the brand. I really think the only reason Hornswaggle is still on a comedy gimmick and not a legitimate wrestler is the young kids and other fans that love his stunts. For that reason, a Hornswoggle squirt gun spray is now equivalent to a steel chairshot. Finlay vs. Miz was a good quality wrestling match. Finlay does a good job of selling and putting over other talent, and he's a pretty good wrestler himself. The crowd was silent the whole Nunzio vs. Bourne match, except for the shooting star press. The match wasn't bad and was very quick-paced. Fans talk all the time that they want to see more wrestling and better matches, well that's what they delivered tonight and the crowd couldn't have cared less. The main event was weird. I'm not totally critical of what happened, it just seemed so sloppy with no explanation. I knew that putting Matt Hardy on ECW was a mistake from the start and apparently WWE is now realizing this as he was hardly even mentioned, let alone there. He could legitimately be the ECW Champ for awhile but for what? Even though he's never held a world championship, his talent is completely above ECW right now. They might have to re-think a storyline to get him drafted back somewhere else.
Terrie Neilson of Las Vegas, Nev. (1.0): Best: Finlay vs. Miz; Matt Hardy video. Worst: Estrada vs. Walker Can we say "desperate"? What the hell was WWE thinking tonight? Or were they even thinking? The first quarter was the only enjoyable quarter, with a break in the rest of the show for the very nice Matt Hardy video. I do like how Smackdown and ECW use the time to show videos of those on the roster who don't get live time. After the first quarter, though, the tailspin started. Poor Chris Harris was left to his own devices to try and make his debut match worth something. Between the crickets chirping in the crowd all night long and Estrada, who can't wrestle himself out of a paper bag, that was a failure. I refuse to blame Harris a/k/a Walker for that one. Nunzio-Evan also suffered due to the dead crowd and whoever fed Adamle misinformation about Nunzio's title history. Assistant Tiffany had an idea before Estrada cut her off in the promo before, probably related to a Bash match. Hopefully there will be followup on that one. Ortiz gets a name change to not be confused with Tony Atlas; Ricky does fit him better and it should have been his name from the start. Tony Atlas hasn't wrestled in years that I know of, and while he's hardly a technician in the ring, Mark Henry can do fine by himself, thank you. So what was this out-of-nowhere turn supposed to be for? There was barely a one-show setup for this and really no need. I really hate to say this as I try to stay away from the up-close backstage stuff, but is this more placating for Henry? Stop before I lose my enjoyment, please.
A.A. Norman of Tulsa, Okla. (5.0): Best moment: Miz and Morrison promo. Worst moment: Debut of Braden Walker. What an awful showing for ECW. The saving grace was the beginning - Miz and Morrison once again are the greatest promo cutters (with no disrespect to HBK and Y2J) and they had a solid match with Finley and Hornswoggle. After this hit, it was all miss for ECW. We have a weak sauce promo debut of Braden Walker, then an even weaker and rusty in-ring debut - is Braden Walker Colin Delaney's fat jobber cousin? He sure acted and looked like it. Mike Adamle, you once again messed up annoucing. Congratulations. Tazz, you once again corrected nearly all of Adamle's announcing mistakes; kudos. He also spoiled the Ricky/Atlas Ortiz name change right before the backstage promo (yet another low moment for the show). Tony Atlas seems like a legend and has a good personality, but I have no idea who he is, sorry. That probably makes me an awful wrestling fan, but could we at least get some legendary footage during ECW instead of all the Smackdown/Raw recaps? Ugh. In any event, awful show and would have been a worthless show if it weren't for Miz & Morrison and later on.
