TORCH QUESTION OF THE WEEK Reax #3: Of Pain & Passion, Have a Nice Day, and Von Erichs?

by James Caldwell, PWTorch columnist

For this week's Question of the Week, we asked Torch readers to make a case for what they consider to be the best wrestling book written thus far. Mick Foley's standard-setting autobiography, "Have a Nice Day" has generated the most votes thus far, so it's coming down to who's the best of the rest. We're still looking for your opinions on Foley's book or any other book worth considering as the best wrestling book ever written.

***

Catherine Piroli, Torch reader: If I had to choose between "Have a Nice Day" and "To Be The Man" as the best wrestling book, I'd have to go with Mick's book purely because I got more of a feel of what it was like for a struggling wrestler sleeping in his car and eating peanut butter sandwiches while trying to make it in the business. Flair's book, while very good, just wasn't as detailed. For someone who had been in the business about ten years more than Foley, I frankly expected a longer book with more detail. Another fantastic book that gets somewhat overlooked is Heath McCoy's "Pain and Passion: The History of Stampede Wrestling". It's honest, thorough, and definitely worth the money. It should be on every wrestling fan's bookshelf. In fact, I'd probably recommend it over Ric Flair's book.

Steve Savino, Torch reader: In my opinion, the best wrestling book ever is "Have A Nice Day", at least until Bruce Mitchell writes his future bestseller on the Von Erichs.

G. Duenas, Torch reader: “Have a Nice Day” is definitely the best wrestling book ever written. It is the one book that no wrestling fan could fail to like - insightful, witty, and personal - and it tells a fascinating, uplifting true story. Foley’s second book is a close second. Very few others are anywhere near his league, but “Pure Dynamite” is definitely worth a read if you can look past the perspective of a bitter Dynamite Kid. Steve Austin’s book is awful, and Hogan’s isn’t much better, while Ric Flair’s was seemingly ghost written by Triple H. It’s a shame, as those three have experienced some of the most unique and memorable moments in wrestling history. Flair’s is probably the best of that group, but only because he’s had a more interesting career. I also think that of all the wrestling books not written by wrestlers, “Sex, Lies and Headlocks” is a great read, while Dave Meltzer’s “Tributes” is extremely classy.

We will continue posting reader feedback throughout the week on this week's question of the week. To contribute your thoughts on what you consider to be the best wrestling book written, send in your name, your pick, and 10-12 lines of text making a case for your person directly to James Caldwell. We'll also be tabulating the results and posting the top reader responses each week in the latest Torch Newsletter.
