Yet another Americas X Cup tournament, this time with Mexico defending the cup against Team U.K. TNA will also crown new tag team champions. Nothing more really needs to be said. Lets take a look at the show.
Chris Harris reminded us that cable theft is illegal.
Highlights from last week were shown, even though it had absolutely nothing to do with tonights show.
TNAs intro aired, and Mike Tenay welcomed us to the show and announced the rules for the Americas X Cup.
(1) Mr. Aguila beat Xtreme Dean at 6:16 to bring the score to Mexico 1, U.K. 0. I cant really say I saw anything too extreme out of Dean. Hes a smallish guy with no muscle definition who was basically out there to make Aguila look good. Aguila won with a split-legged moonsault.
Raven talked about his upcoming contender match with Chris Harris and his destiny to win the NWA Title.
(2) Heavy Metal pinned Robbie Dynamite at 3:41 to bring the score to Mexico 2, U.K. 0. Wow, that was quick. Not really long enough to evaluate Dynamites ability. Tenay mentioned he took his name after his hero, Dynamite Kid. Metal won with a magistral cradle.
A long, uninspired Chris Harris promo aired.
(3) Hector Garza defeated Frankie Sloan at 9:26 to bring the score to Mexico 3, U.K. 0. Tenay mentioned that Sloan is the veteran of the Brits. The lanky Sloan worked on Garzas leg throughout most of the match. Garza came back to win with a gorgeous corkscrew press.
David Taylor was shown in the back chewing out the Brits for not winning yet. He called them a bunch of window-lickers. No, he didnt really say that, Im just kidding. He said he didnt want to have to go home and explain to the queen why they lost. Yeah, right.
(4) James Mason beat Abismo Negro at 5:39 to bring the score to Mexico 3, U.K. 1. Tenay said that Masons style was traditional British mat wrestling. Mason is the biggest of the four team members. A frustrated David Taylor came to ringside with the British flag and lightly tapped Negro on the back with it, but Negro sold it anyway. Mason then locked on a cross-face chicken wing for the submission win.
Kid Kash badmouthed Christopher Daniels and Low-Ki while Dallas stood by trying to look mean. Kash said the only thing big about Low-Ki was his lips. Im not going to touch that one.
(5) Robbie Dynamite & Frankie Sloan defeated Hector Garza & Mr. Aguila at 9:34 to tie the score at Mexico 3, U.K. 3. As dull as the singles matches were, this was an outstanding tag match. It was as if they were saving it all for this one. Garza sold the previously injured leg as he limped to the ring. Once the match started, Team U.K. mercilessly destroyed Garzas knee. Hector managed to tag his partner a couple of times, but Aguila seemed insistent on tagging Garza back in so they could perform some double teaming. David Taylor ran out again and jammed a flagpole into Aguilas throat, allowing Sloan to get the pin.
Christopher Daniels and Low-Ki reminded us that they werent reforming Triple X, just trying to win the tag team titles.
(6) James Mason & Xtreme Dean beat Abismo Negro & Heavy Metal at 7:25 to bring the score to Mexico 3, U.K. 5. Although not as good as the previous one, this was still a pretty entertaining tag match. Taylor came to the ring and delivered a shoulderbreaker variation to Negro while the referee was distracted. Mason again locked on a cross-face chicken wing and made Negro tap out.
A pretty decent Jeff Jarrett promo saw him talk down his opponent for the cage match. In a nice touch, he mentioned past champions Jim Londos and Strangler Lewis.
In the back, Antonio Pena was chewing out Team Mexico for falling behind in the tournament. Armando Quintero translated for Scott Hudson, wildly overacting in the process.
(7) Team Mexico defeated Team U.K. at 12:24 to retain the Americas X Cup with a final score of 11-7. Taylor was at ringside with his team and made his presence known when he tripped Heavy Metal, allowing Dynamite to pin him and bring the score to 3-7. Negro eliminated Dean with a great tombstone piledriver to make it 5-7. Taylor got ready to interfere again, but Heavy Metal ran out and chased him back to the dressing room. Aguila delivered a split-legged moonsault to Sloan to even it back up 7-7. Garza and Aguila then hit a double moonsault on Mason and Dynamite to make the final score 11-7. Pretty good match with a thrilling finish.
Scott Hudson was in the back with Vince Russo and James Storm. Russo said Jarrett would face Storm next week. Storm said he would hand Jarretts head on a plate to his partner, Chris Harris.
Don West talked about NWA-TNA.com and put over their wrestling school. Tenay announced next weeks lineup, which sounds outstanding. Matches scheduled are Monte Brown vs. Sabu, Diamond vs. Swinger, Kazarian vs. Dutt, Storm vs. Jarrett, and Harris vs. Raven.
Scott Hudson was in the back with D-Lo Brown and Apolo, who said they would beat whoever the new NWA Tag Team Champions would be.
Highlights of the NWA Tag Team Title Tournament were shown.
(8) Kid Kash & Dallas beat Christopher Daniels & Low-Ki at 14:22 to win the NWA Tag Team Title Tournament. Dallas was announced as being from the Lone Star state. Dallas from Texas. Get it? How clever. Not a bad match at all. Kash, predictably, did most of the work in the beginning, allowing Dallas in only to no-sell some occasional offense from their opponents. Daniels and Ki eventually began double teaming the big guy and finally chopped him down to size. Kash smacked Ki with a chair and then threw it to Daniels. When Ki saw Daniels holding the chair, he thought his partner was the one who had hit him. Ki got Dallas back in the ring and worked him over with more kicks. Kash hit Daniels with a pipe, then rolled him in the ring. While the referee was rolling Daniels back out, Kash hit Low-Ki with the pipe. Dallas then executed his flipping powerbomb on Low-Ki for the victory and the NWA Tag Titles.
Promos for next weeks PPV closed the show.
Random Thoughts: I have never heard a more vocal crowd at the Asylum. Team Mexico has become way over with the Nashville fans...Team U.K. had a really rocking version of God Save the Queen for their entrance music...Frankie Sloan looked a lot like Trip from the movie Detroit Rock City...James Mason looked like an accountant wearing wrestling tights...As green as Dallas is, I believe the big lug has potential.
Final Analysis: Average show this week. Americas X Cup was fun the first time. It was still fun three weeks later. Three weeks after that, it was still okay. Now, its starting to wear really thin. Were going to run out of countries soon. The singles matches in the first half of the show were just there and the wrestlers seemed to be going through the motions. The show picked up for the second half and delivered some fine entertainment. Dull first hour, exciting second hour. If you have seen any of the previous Americas X Cup PPVs, then theres no reason to order the replay of this one.
