Newcastle, England at Telewest Arena
Report by Jack Kline, PWTorch.com correspondent
(1) Women'sChampionship Match: Jazz defeated Trish Stratus by pinfall. Victoria came to ringside and distracted the ref long enough for Teddy Long to enter the ring and run Trish into the ringpost, shoulder first, allowing Jazz to get the pin. Average/Good women's match.
Crowd have been very vocal so far and a chant of "Jerry, Jerry" breaks out, which is acknowledged by Lawler with a royalwave, when The King & JR are shown on the arena screens.
(2) Intercontinental Championship Match: Christian defeated Booker T by pinfall. Crowd were into this one which was surprisingly very good. Christian wonby pinning Booker T after a series of rolls and reversals which resulted in Christian holding onto the ropes to secure the pin.
Steve Austin approached Teddy Long in the hallway and told him that, due to his interference in the Jazz/Trish match, he was making the Dudleys Vs Rodney Mack & Chris Nowinksi matcha 6 man affair with the addition of Spike and Long to their respective teams. Kane appears behind Austin after Long leaves and Austin asks if he has problem, Kane just walks away.
Recap of Austin/Kane incident from Raw/
(3) Tag Team Championship Match: RVD & Kane defeated La Resistance by pinfall. Good match, crowd were hot for this one, plenty of Rob Van Dam chants (which he milked) and a huge pop for Kane chokeslamming both members of La Resistance at the same time, which was followedupwitha Frogsplash from RVDto get the pin.
Al Snow interview with Goldust.
(4) Goldustdefeated Rico by pinfall. Typical Heat match. Goldust wins it with a powerslam out of nowhere on Rico.
JR & The King say a few words about the passing of "Classy" Freddie Blassie and introduce the video tribute originally shown on Smackdown. Crowd are chanting "Freddie, Freddie", both announcers stand up and applaud.
Chris Jericho's Highlight Reel: Excellent mic work from all involved, crowd really into what was a long segment. Jericho slags of Newcastle and calls the crowd "tossers". Slags of the cheap red carpet and 2 bar stools which comprise the set. Someone did their homework and Jericho hit all the right buttons with digs at Newcastle's failed bid for Capital of Culture and the manager of the local 'soccer' team Newcastle United.
Jericho introduces Eric Bischoff (he and Jerichohug numerous times)who also proceeds to slag of the crowd, including calling someone a "fat bastard", cue the entrance of Stone Cold. Hugh pop for Austin, which he seemed thrilled by with numerous smiles. Austin throws the chairs from the ring, loud Austin chants. More excellent mic work from all involved, they all seemed to be enjoying themselves. Austin announces that the World Championship Match will be a Street Fight.Ends with all 3 drinking beer and Austin giving Jericho the stunner, teases giving Bischoff one and eventually does, citing that it's Okay because Linda McMahon wasn't referring to the UK when she said Austin couldn't touch Bischoff.
(5) The Dudleys defeated Rodney Mack, Chris Nowinksi & Teddy Long by pinfall
Spike pins Long. Okay match followed by 3D on Nowinksi.
(6) Scott Steiner defeated Test by pinfall. Val Venis was special guest referee. Good pop, as expected, for Torrie Wilson. Okay match, nothing special, Steiner won with what looked like a variation of the DDT.
(7) World Championship Match: Triple H (with Ric Flair) defeated Kevin Nash (with Shawn Michaels)by pinfall in a Street Fight. Match starts, Michaels & Flair fight at ringside and Flair blades after going into the ringpost. Flair, whois bleeding heavily, enters the ring and beats on Nash before being chased by Michaels. All 4 fight up the ramp, Flair and Michaels go backstage.Nash teases the same bump used at the last PPV, Triple H through the announcers table, but they end up back in the ring.A couple of ref bumps and blatant striking of said officials, results in no refs being able to make the 3 count when Nash powerbombs Triple H.Flair rejoins and Michaels eventually comes back out to even things up. End comes with Nash readying Flair for the Jackknife when Triple H hits him with the dreaded sledge hammer for the pin.
Okay effort, no real outstanding matches but an entertaining night nonetheless.
