TNA BOUND FOR GLORY PPV REPORT
October 18, 2009
Live from Irvine, Cal.
Just a note: I'll be filling in 'til about the end of the first hour of the show, when James Caldwell will take over his usual duties.
PRE-SHOW:
-Jeremy Borash opened the pre-show by hyping the matches slated for Bound For Glory. He was joined by Joey Fatone, formerly of 'N Sync.
-A video package aired on the Foley vs. Abyss feud.
-Back to Joey and JB. Fatone wanted some action right now, tag-team action to be specific. Well, he's gonna get it.
1- MOTOR CITY MACHINE GUNS vs. LETHAL CONSEQUENCES
Winning team will participate in the Ultimate X Match that will open the PPV. Mike Tenay and Taz were on commentary. Apparently, D'Angelo Dinero was in Irvine, but was called away due to a family emergency, so he will not be participating in the Ultimate X Match. Shelley threw Creed out of the ring, but Creed landed a big boot and an enziguiri back in for a two-count. Lethal got the best of his exchanges with Chris Sabin. But the Guns took over with some double-teaming. Lethal Consequences did some two-on-one of their own, with Creed doing the hesitation dropkick while Creed held Shelley. Fans seemed to be into the Guns more than their counterparts. Shelley fought off a double team and Lethal accidentally clotheslined his partner. Sabin tagged in and fired off some forearms. Springboard clothesline by Creed. Springboard tornado DDT by Sabin, and a sick one at that. First "TNA, TNA!" chants of the night. Cross-body/neck-breaker combo by the Guns, and they picked up the win.
WINNERS: Machine Guns, at 5:53. Fast-paced, high-energy match.
-A preview video of Matt Morgan vs. Kurt Angle aired.
-JB and Fatone introduced TNA President Dixie Carter, who was in the front row. Figured she'd be able to at least get backstage. She complimented the crowd and thanked them for traveling as far as they did for the show.
-AJ Styles vs. Sting was previewed in video fashion. The count-down clock had about 12:00 to go 'til the top of the hour. Taz and Tenay provided some sound-bites in the video.
-Lauren was backstage with Team 3D. Brother Ray was excited, to say the least. He talked about his match for the two most coveted tag titles in the business. He also said he was looking forward to some of the other matches on the card, which he listed off. He plugged Zakk Wylde playing the National Anthem as well. Devon did his "Testify" thing.
-A quick video plugged Bound For Glory, "next on pay-per view."
-JB told the fans to contact their cable provider to order Bound For Glory. Fatone came back into the picture and he talked about the Ultimate X Match as he stood on the top rope. Borash ran down the entire card. Borash asked Fatone to predict Sting vs. Styles. He didn't really do it, just talking about the match in general terms. Borash then talked about the FanFest held earlier in the weekend.
-A video package aired where the wrestlers talked about how important Bound For Glory is. Somebody forgot to put make-up on Sarita. Jeff Jarrett was shown in the video too, for what it's worth.
PAY-PER VIEW:
-A video package spouting the usual buzzwords opened the show. They also had wrestlers talking about their feuds and top matches. Wow, quite long too.
-Mike Tenay welcomed everyone to the show and they panned the crowd- lots of darkness though.
-Dave Penzer introduced Zakk Wylde, who would be performing the National Anthem. He did so on guitar from the aisleway.
1- CHRIS SABIN vs. ALEX SHELLEY vs. SUICIDE vs. HOMICIDE vs. DANIELS vs. AMAZING RED- ULTIMATE X MATCH FOR THE X DIVISION
CHAMPIONSHIP
Everybody paired off to start and the crowd seemed to be into Daniels most. Red took Daniels to the floor and Homicide flew thru the ropes into him. The Guns did some teamwork to take out Suicide on the floor. At this point, most were on the outside while Red and Daniels fought in the ring. Red hurricanrana'd Daniels off the top and to the floor onto everyone else. Giant swing and dropkick from the Guns. Homicide was the first to try for the belt, about 5:00 in. Suicide jumped up to stop him, but both men fell to the mat. More double-teaming from the Guns. They stopped Red from going for his title. It didn't work, as Sabin missed Red and hit his partner with the hesitation dropkick. Homicide got the upper hand and climbed to the belt again. This time, Daniels stopped him and hit a DVD. Red climbed the cables, but Suicide kicked him down. Daniels and Sabin both got close to the belt. Jumping DDT by Sabin. Everybody started hitting their spots in the ring. The big spot was off the top, a sunset flip and German suplex by three guys that took out Daniels on the mat. Daniels and Suicide both climbed to the top of the structure. So did Red. Daniels tried to suplex Suicide off, to no avail. Daniels dropped down to the cable, as did Suicide. Both men fell and it looked really bad. Like, injury-filled bad. Red was able to fight off the Guns in the end to retain.
WINNER: Red, at 15:16. Kind of anti-climactic finish. I know it gets the crowd going, but some of these moves and falls were just too dangerous. They should really scale things back a bit. Otherwise, a good spot-fest.
-The Beautiful People made fun of Lauren backstage during their interview. They didn't seem worried about Sarita and Taylor Wilde.
-The champs got equal time and Sarita said there is nothing more beautiful than gold.
-Tenay and Taz talked about some of the other main events to take place tonight.
2- VELVET SKY & MADISON RAYNE vs. SARITA & TAYLOR WILDE- KNOCKOUTS TAG TEAM TITLE
Referee Jamie Tucker sent Lacey Von Erich to the back, but she convinced him with a kiss to let her stay at ringside. But Earl Hebner came out (to loud "You Screwed Bret" chants) and she seduced him as well. But Earl sent her packing anyway.
Wilde had a couple deep arm-drags on Sky. Madison Rayne took control of Sarita soon after with a dropkick for two. Double-team face-plant by the Beautiful People. Both ladies were down and both made tags. A Wilde pin was broken up but Sarita took care of Sky with a dropkick off the top. Double-team dropkick/suplex by the champs to retain.
WINNERS: Sarita & Wilde, at 2:59. Surprised at how short it was. Fine while it lasted, I guess.
-A video package previewed the Legend's title match.
-Eric Young and Kevin Nash were backstage with Lauren. Young said Hernandez is a black mark on TNA.
3- HERNANDEZ vs. ERIC YOUNG vs. KEVIN NASH- THREE-WAY MATCH FOR THE LEGENDS CHAMPIONSHIP
Hernandez was taken to the outside quickly and double-teamed. Nash got sent into the ringpost and Hernandez took it to Young in the ring 'til Nash came back in. Hernandez tried a delayed suplex on Young, but Nash got to him. It was pretty much two-on-one the entire match. Young went for a cover and Nash sloppily tried to break it up but was late, as Young had agreed that Nash would retain if Young got protected. Hernandez missile dropkicked Nash off the top. He cleaned house and landed a sit-down powerbomb on EY, broken up by Nash. He then jumped over the top rope and onto Young. Back in, the heels took over and Young hit an elbow off the top. Young pulled down Nash's straps to signal the end for Hernandez. As Nash set up for the powerbomb, Young pushed Hernandez's head into Nash's groin and made the pin on Nash (with Nash's shoulder clearly off the mat) to get the win.
WINNER: Young, at 8:53. Finish didn't really make sense as why would EY want to anger Nash and the Mafia any further? I thought Hernandez would come out looking a little better.
-Beer Money and The Mafia were arguing backstage while Brutus Magnus tried to play peacemaker and tell the guys they should focus their attention on Team 3D
4- SCOTT STEINER & BOOKER T. vs. BRUTUS MAGNUS & DOUG WILLIAMS vs. BEER MONEY, INC. vs. TEAM 3D- FULL METAL MAYHEM MATCH FOR THE TNA & IWGP TAG TITLES
Pretty much a TLC match, for those scoring at home. Steiner threw Devon into the railing, then used the ladder against him. Beer Money sent Williams into a steel chair in the ring and Booker took out the British Invasion. Booker tried to climb the ladder to get the belts, but couldn't. Steiner choked Devon with a cable at ringside. Beer Money hit the DWI on Booker. Suplexes galore from Steiner, who came in to help his partner. Frankensteiner on Williams for a huge pop. Booker appeared to be injured at ringside and Sharmell came out to check on him. They brought a stretcher out as Williams got a Whassup Drop on Steiner to rile the crowd. Team 3D came out of nowhere to take out the Brits and Beer Money. At ringside, Zakk Wylde threw a drink into Magnus' face and Brother Ray gave him a chair, which he used to the back of Magnus. Team 3D got the tables, per the fans' request. Stereo chokeslams on Beer Money, but Steiner brained Team 3D with a steel chair (insert uproar over chairs to the head here). Steiner climbed the ladder, but 3D sent him from there through the table. As 3D went after the titles, Rhino knocked them down off the ladder with a chair, but the IWGP titles came down with them at 13:00. The Brits took advantage and took out Devon. Beer Money suplexed Brutus off, using both ladders, but Brutus landed on Robert Roode coming down. Another dangerous spot. Storm got some liquid courage and powerbombed Magnus off the ladder. Big Rob came in and pressed Roode over his head and sent him through a table at ringside. He helped Magnus get up the ladder and grab the TNA belts.
WINNERS: Team 3D (IWGP Titles) and The British Invasion (TNA Tag Titles) at 17:22. Nice garbage match. Entertaining, at least. They didn't give Booker much to do in what could be his last show.
