NWA-TNA PPV #18
October 23, 2002
Live from Nashville, Tenn.
Show opens with Tenay hyping the matches for tonight, including the new graphics
(1) Red wins a 5 way elimination match to earn a shot at the X title. Match starts after all the participants are introduced as once. Tenay says the match is under Lucha style rules. Typical out of control, free for all to start with the prettiest move being a 3 way SAT Boston Crab on Kash. Kash jumps from the top turnbuckle outside onto Joel and smacks his head on the mat. West asks Tenay to explain Lucha rules again. Skipper walks the ropes then hits a huracanrana on Jose who is sitting in the middle of the top rope. Kash overhead slams Red from the top rope. Skipper eliminates Jose with the Play of the Day. Skipper hits a spinning crossbody outside the ring and then a flying headscissors onto Jose to come back in the ring. Joel eliminates Skipper with a Maximo Explosion. Kash eliminates Joel with a Moneymaker (a double underhook piledriver that looks like it will at some point break someone's back). That leaves Red & Kash. Kash gets a 2 with a legdrop. Red gets a 2 after a spinning kick. Red gets a 2 with a tornado DDT. Kash double springboard body attack on Red for a 2. Red and Kash then get 2 counts out of a sunset flip. Kash hits the Bankroll (fisherman's buster) for a 2. Kash double springboard crossbody for a 2. Kash puts Red on the top turnbuckle, Red elbows him down and hits the Infa-Red for the win.
(If you wonder why I don't get the report up until 11 p.m. - these matches are the reason why!)
The scroll rolls as Tenay hypes up an NWATNA.com silent auction with the money going to benefit the hunt for the Washington DC area sniper. (I know it's certainly for a little publicity, but I still think it's a class move.)
Goldy is in the back interviewing Brian Lawler who is looking around for someone, and asks if he can do the interview later.
Footage is shown from last week of Chris Harris & James Storm getting attacked by the non-brothers Michaels & the Hot Shots.
(2) America's Most Wanted (Chris Harris & James Storm) defeated The Hot Shots to retain the NWA World tag team titles. Harris & Storm charge the ring cutting off JB and jump the Hot Shots. They pummel the Shots outside the ring in almost a Road Warriors fashion. After a couple minutes of pounding on the floor they finally get back into the ring. Storm and Harris take turns pounding Chase Stevens. Cassidy O'Reilly trips up Harris giving the Shots the advantage. O'Reilly suplexes Harris for a 2. Tags in Stevens and they use a strange looking double roll thing (I swear I have no idea on what to call that move). O'Reilly locks in a one-legged Boston Crab, lets the move go and tries to whip Harris into the ropes but is chopped down. Harris to makes the tag, but is cut off by Stevens. Harris spears O' Reilly and makes the hot tag. Storm then beats on both until Stevens throws him over the top rope. Storm goes for the Catatonic on O'Reilly, but is superkicked down by Stevens for a 2. Storm then hits the 8 second ride (F-5) on O'Reilly for the win.
Video package is shown of the Siaki/Lynn promo from last week.
Goldy interviews Jerry Lynn who says he'll fight through the pain of his injured right knee and knock off Siaki tonight, as the interview ends Brian Lawler is shown with his face pressed against the camera asking if anyone has seen April.
(3) Jerry Lynn defeated Sonny Siaki in a "Grudge match". Lynn opens the match by attacking Siaki outside the ring, kicking him over the rail into the crowd. Lynn then dives over the rail into the crowd onto Siaki. They go back into the ring where Lynn goes for a bodyslam but his knee collapses and Siaki falls on top for a 2. Siaki then goes to work on the knee, and locks in a one-legged Boston Crab. Siaki lets go. Lynn looks like he is going for a sunset flip down to the floor, but he stops in mid air and legdrops Siaki. Lynn sells the knee again. Siaki then drags Lynn to the post and slams/wraps his knee against it. Siaki then hits a shinbreaker. Siaki goes for another but Lynn gets a 2 with a sunset flip. Lynn gets a crucifix for another 2. Lynn misses a punch and Siaki swipes his leg out from under him. Siaki then locks a side grapevine on Lynn's legs, lets go, waits for Lynn to get up and then kicks his leg out from under him. Siaki then goes for a deathlock variation but lets go quickly so he can lift up Lynn by the leg and slam him to the ground. Lynn kicks off a Siaki figure 4 attempt, and gets a bridging rollup for a surprise ending. Siaki then (predictably) goes nuts and goes after Lynn's injured leg and he screams bloody murder. As the referees come in to break up the fight, Lynn runs across the ring to jump on Siaki. Siaki bails from the ring and Lynn collapses to the mat. He is then helped out by ref Scott Armstrong.
As the scroll rolls Tenay hypes a Commissioner Bob Armstrong major announcement for next week about tile matches.
A video package is shown of Killings-Hennig from last week.
Curt Hennig & B.G. James come to the ring for a promo. Hennig (let me warn you, this may be the most inaccurate factual promo ever.) starts it off by saying that one mark that tried to steal my gimmick was that Diamond Dallas Page." He then says Jarrett takes the cake of Hennig wannabe's. He says he beat his ass when he was a rookie. Hennig then says he started the West Texas Rednecks a couple years ago and had a #1 hit with "Rap Is Crap" and then when he turned around Jarrett was holding a guitar - "Curt Hennig wannabe." He then tells the camera to zoom in and says this is the line that's been heard around the world - "I'm the guy who took down Brock Lesnar at 35,000 feet." He then challenges Jarrett for next week and repeats the Lesnar line. Jarrett's music plays (Hennig keeps talking) but no one comes out. Tenay throws it to Goldy in the back, she is standing at the Gorilla position with Jarrett & Lawler. Jarrett asks Lawler to go with him out to the ring, but Lawler says he's looking for April. They cut back to the ring where James takes the mic and cuts a pretty solid promo on Lawler.
Tenay announces at NWATNA.com that the company has began a silent auction to help build funds to contribute to the Washington DC-area sniper reward fund.
Scott Hall (who Tenay says "isn't on his format") comes out and tongue twists the line "I'm trying to be a good boy, but I'm sick and tired of trying" and calls out Jeff Jarrett.
(4) Scott Hall defeated Jeff Jarrett. Hall takes the advantage early, taking Jarrett outside. Jarrett rolls back in and takes the advantage with kicks. Jarrett tries a cross body press but Hall hits a fallaway slam. Jarrett bails up the rampway, but Hall follows. They brawl in the crowd. Tenay talks about their IC title history together. Hall hits Jarrett with a chair twice in the back. They work themselves back to ringside where Hall slams him face first on the announce table and then rolls him back in. Goes for the Outsider's Edge, but Jarrett backdrops him over the ropes. Jarrett leaps off with a forearm and then slams Hall's head into the ring post. Jarrett then hits Hall in the gut with a chair and rolls him back in. Jarrett drills Hall with some punches in the corner, Hall tries to fight back, but Jarrett stays on top. Jarrett hits a running neckbreaker for a 2, tries for another cover with his feet on the ropes but is caught by the referee. Jarrett then whips Hall off the ropes and goes for a sleeper. Hall then digs down deepfights out of it and reverses a hip toss into a chokeslam. Both men are down as ref Rudy Charles counts them out. Jarrett rolls over on top of Hall for a 2, but Hall kicks out. Jarrett goes for a clothesline, Hall ducks and Jarrett hits the ref. As Hall tries to revive the ref, Jarrett hits Hall with a chair. Hennig then runs out. As he does the lights go out and The Truth is shown on the big screen saying Hennig should be more worried about their match tonight then running in. He says he'll be in Hennig's ass "like an old, cold, rectal thermometer." As the lights come back up, Lawler jumps Hennig from behind. James runs into the ring and chases off Lawler. Jarrett goes for the Stroke on Hennig, but he elbows him off and into a Outsider's Edge for the win.
Tenay says that the auction has raised over 10,000 $ in high bids in 24 hours. Tape is shown from last week of Lawler jumping James.
(5) B.G. James defeated Brian Lawler. As is the theme tonight, they start on the floor by pounding each other against the guard rail. At one point Lawler grabbed the mic and asked "Has anybody seen April?" and then plunked James in the head with the mic. Typical match you'd expect from these two. Near the end, Lawler hit a superkick and climbed the top rope. As he did, Syxx and April are shown at the top of the entrance way in a extended make out session. Lawler was so stunned he fell off the top, crotched himself on the top rope and James then covered him for the win. Lawler is shown crying against the ropes and all the way to the back.
A video package is shown from last week of Syxx-A.J. Styles X title match.
(6) A.J. Styles (w/ Mortimer Plumtree) defeated Syxx in a no-DQ match to win the NWA X title. Syxx cuts a pre-match promo saying while it's no DQ, if Plumtree interferes he'll get his ass kicked. Plumtree joins Tenay & West on commentary. Styles begins the match with an exaggerated crotch chop and is chopped down. After a lockup Syxx runs Styles through the ropes. Syxx hits a perfect flip from the ring onto Styles outside. Back in Syxx hits a spinning heel kick and a face buster. Syxx then uses a surfboard, but is almost counted out due to his shoulders being on the mat. Styles head scissors Syxx outside, goes for a baseball slide but is caught, and dumped neck first on the rail. Syxx then grabs the ringsteps but misses. Styles then throws Syxx into the post. Back in the ring, Styles hits a Spiral Tap for a 2. Syles stays on the advantage working on the back. Syxx fights back but Styles hits a asai moonsault into a reverse neckbreaker for a 2. Syxx then hits 2 spinning heel kicks, and gets a powerbomb for a 2. Syxx then kicks Styles down in the corner and gets a bronco buster. Syxx then goes to celebrate but is powerbombed off the turnbuckles. Styles then rolls up Syxx for a 2, but Syxx bridges out and hits a X-factor for a 2, but the count is broken up by Plumtree. Styles then misses Syxx and hits Plumtree. Syxx hits a Northern Lights for a 2. Syxx goes to the top misses a punch and is German suplexed for a 2. Styles goes to the top for a crossbody, but Syxx rolls through for a 2. Styles goes for the Clash but Syxx reaches the ropes. Lawler runs to ringside and hits Syxx over the head with something . Styles then hits the Styles Clash for the win and the title. After the match, Syxx raises Styles hand. Lawler then comes back in the ring and hits Syxx with the title belt.
As the scroll rolls, Tenay hypes up the silent auction.
(7) Jorge Estrada (w/ Priscilla) defeated Ace Steel. Steel comes to the ring without Plumtree. Pretty much a back and forth match up with Steel looking a little sloppy early. Estrada gets the win with a rollup when Priscilla trips up Steel. After the match Plumtree runs out and argues with, and then attacks, Priscilla.
As the scroll rolls, Tenay hypes up Hermie Sadler's TNA car and the silent auction.
Syxx then comes out and cuts a promo saying that Syles is a world class wrestler, and says he was too worried about screwing with Lawler's woman saying "she's a hell of a piece of ass." but it started as a "rib." He then challenges Lawler to a fight for the rights to April. Lawler then comes out and says "the fight is over" and that he can have her. April then runs out and says that Syxx drugged her and made her kiss him, and that she still loves him. Lawler then runs in the ring and pummels Syxx.
The scroll rolls again, and I wonder what it would take for Wade to pay my way to cover NWA Hawaii events.
Don West hard sells next week. Lawler-Syxx for the rights to April, Red-Styles for the X title, Harris & Storm defend the tag titles, Estrada & Priscilla vs. Mortimer & Steel, and Truth will defend the World title.
(8) Ron "The Truth" Killings defeated Curt Hennig to retain the NWA World title. Hennig runs to the ring and jumps on Killings. After his flipping hairpull, Killings bails out. Hennig follows but is whipped into the post. Truth slams Hennig onto the announce table, and follows with right hands. Truth misses a dive onto Hennig and crotches himself on the gaurdrail. Killings takes back over by choking Hennig with a cable and pounding him with right hands to the head. Back in the ring, Killings continues the assault hitting a 2nd rope legdrop for a 2. Killings hits a scissors kick and hits a fistdrop from the 2nd rope. He then rakes Hennig in the eyes. Tenay brings up why Hennig was blinded last week by saying Truth rubbed "liniment" (Ali-Liston I will never die) in his eyes. Hennig takes the advantage with some chops, but Truth quickly regains control with a flying forearm. Hennig gets a ankle lock but Truth reaches the ropes. After back and forth slaps, Hennig kicks Truth low, and hits a backdrop. Mr. Wrestling III shows up on the apron and is brought in by Hennig. As Hennig tries to peel off his mask, Killings hits Hennig from behind with brass knuckles for the win. The "Evil Returns" promo is shown to end the show.
All in all, a solid show. And the best part - no necrophilia!
