NWA-TNA PPV #16
October 9, 2002
Live from Nashville, Tenn.
By Mike Sempervive, Torch Team Contributor
Show opens with a pan of the crowd - which looks to be packed - and a Don West sell of the show for tonight.
Tape is shown of last week where Ron The Truth Killings is attacked by the man in white.
As JB attempts to make a ring intro, Killings comes out to the ring to cut a promo. Insults the Memphis Grizzlies & Tennessee Titans. Calls out "Team Derelict" of Syxx, Hall, & James as hiring a "hit man" to attack him, and that person will be their partner tonight. West & Tenay talk as the Truth is speaking, which leads to Killings calling out the "baseball card man". West then shows clips from last week where Killings helped jump Syxx & James. Killings then threatens West and goes back into his promo saying he'll kick all of Team Derelict's "white asses tonight." B.G. James & Syxx then come out to interrupt. James says "we don't live in a 'perfect' world - or do we?" and out walks Curt Hennig to a big pop. Hennig says he was hired to do a job, and he's going to do it. Syxx then takes the mic and tells Truth that the'll whip his ass so bad he'll think he's messed up on drugs. Thanks Pac. Lawler & Jarrett attack the faces from behind, they all roll into the ring, the faces clean house. James takes the mic and says we can do it now which leads to...
(1) In a 6-man tag match Curt Hennig, Syxx, & B.G. James defeated Jeff Jarrett, Brian Lawler, & Ron The Truth Killings. Before the match Lawler sits April down in a chair outside the ring. Hennig & Jarrett start the match off, Tenay rolls through a list of Hennig's accomplishments, Hennig starts it off with a smack to the face, headlock, shoulderblock, and then slaps Lawler & Killings off the ring apron as the crowd chants "Jerry's Kid" at Lawler (or is it Jeff?). As Jarrett takes the offense, Tenay rolls through more Hennig accomplishments, Hennig takes back over and tags in Syxx. Jarrett takes Syxx down and tags in Lawler, after a little back in forth, Killings & James are tagged in. James is on the offense early, but Killings comes back quickly hitting several moves including the backflip out of the corner and his scissors kick. Jarrett, Killings, & Lawler use quick tags to all take an opportunity to pound James. Jarrett is back in tries a back bodydrop but is kicked in the face by James. James "hot tags" Syxx who nails Jarrett with a spin kick and a flying crossbody, goes for a bronco buster in the corner but Jarrett raises his leg. Killings is tagged in and hits Syxx with a running powerslam, Lawler is tagged in and delivers a headbutt to the groin. Jarrett comes in and hits a vertical suplex and a pin attempt but Hennig breaks up the count. Killings, then Lawler is tagged back in to resume the offense on Syxx. Syxx fights out of a rear chinlock, and gets a sky high, Syxx gets to the corner to get the hot tag to Hennig. On the outside, Jarrett & James brawl to the backstage area. Lawler gets the upperhand on Hennig and hits the hip-hop drop, but Syxx breaks up the count. Syxx goes for a 2 on Killings but Lawler pulls the ref outside the ring and knocks him down. Syxx goes outside to attack Lawler as Killings goes after Hennig in the ring. Out of the crowd comes all-white pointy hooded sweatshirt guy. Killings takes a swing at him and misses leading to a powerbomb and a Hennig-plex on Killings to end the match. On the back of the man in white's jacket is the name Mr. Wrestling III.
They throw it to Goldy in the back, where James is shown knocked cold, the camera pans over where Jarrett is shown slumped over dropping a pipe.
Crawler rolls across the bottom hyping NWA events, as Tenay talks about famous masked wrestlers.
A video package is shown from last week of the Lynn-Styles X title ladder match.
JB introduces X division champ Jerry Lynn who cuts an in-ring promo on Sonny Siaki. He says that when he retains his title tonight, he'll face him next week. Siaki then comes out and challenges Lynn to come up the ramp after him . Lynn agrees and spears and pummels Siaki on the entrance ramp. Siaki then throws Lynn off the ramp into the steel guardrail. The camera pans down to show Lynn's leg tangled up in the rail. Tenay hypes the fact that his right knee was injured in the WWF last year. (There's better following of WWF storylines in TNA than there is in Stamford) Security & the EMT's come out as Lynn screams "not again!" EMT's load Lynn onto a stretcher and into an ambulance.
Tape from earlier today of Syxx apologizing to Lo-Ki for saying he deserved a title shot against Killings. As Lo-Ki began to respond A.J. Styles comes in and asks "how much ass can you kiss in a couple sentences." Styles cuts a pretty good promo telling Syxx that he couldn't do moves 15 years ago that Styles can do now. Styles then walks away leaving Syxx & Lo shaking their heads.
(2) Cowboy James Storm & Wildcat Chris Harris defeated The SAT's to retain the NWA tag team titles. A very good match. Harris pinned Joel after whatever they call their double team flipping powerbomb. The match went back and forth and even though there was a major size difference, both teams worked extremely well together.
The crawler runs at the bottom of the screen hyping the NWA shows.
They throw it to Goldy in the ring who introduces Chris Rock (who has my Adidas jumpsuit on from 1984) as the crowd goes nuts, Rock says that "NWA-TNA is the best wrestling in the whole world and if you think this stuff is fake, come down and get your ass kicked." It was a very short piece.
The crawler rolls at the bottom, as Tenay hypes the TNA guys at the NWA 54 th anniversary show.
(3) In a 4-way, 15 minute Iron Man match, Ace Steel defeated Lo-Ki, Kid Kash, & Tony Mamaluke. Mortimer Plumtree joins Tenay & West at ringside and admits he's scouting X division talent. The match is all over the place with everyone hitting moves on everyone else, which leads to the guy who hit the move setting himself up to get hit by a move by somebody else. (Whew. Sorry, that's the best I can do on this one. And I thought trying to cover an SAT match was difficult.) Ace Steel pins Lo-Ki and Mamaluke pins Kash at the same time to both get one fall. Plumtree admits to talking to A.J. Styles. Kash pins Mamaluke at about the 8 minute mark to get his first fall. Lo-Ki locks a armbar submission on Steel to get his first win as Kash & Mamaluke brawl outside the ring. Kash press slams Mamaluke off the announce table nearly straight down on his head. In the ring Lo-Ki re-injures the left ankle that has been reported to be hurt, and Steel takes advantage, as Kash stays on Mamaluke. The end of the match is ruined when Lo-Ki goes for a suplex on Steel from outside the ring but is tripped up by Plumtree who holds his foot down as Steel gets the pin. Why is it ruined? Time had run out and the bell had rang before Scott Armstrong counted to 3. JB announces Steel wins the match as Tenay covers and says that he thought time had run out.
In the ring, Don West interviews Hermie Sadler who hypes how he is driving the NWA-TNA car this weekend at Charlotte. Miss TNA Bruce comes out to challenge him. Jeff Jarrett then comes out and asks why they didn't get a "real" NASCAR superstar to drive the car. He says Sadler sucks as a wrestler and sucks as a race-car driver. Sadler then cuts a promo back saying every time he comes on the show to promote it someone insults him. He asks Bruce whether he's a man or a woman which leads to Bruce & Jarrett jumping him. B.G. James comes out to make the save and tells Jarrett "in the immortal words of Karen Carpenter - we've only just begun." (did he just quote The Carpenters?)
As the crawler rolls at the bottom, Tenay hypes up NWA Wildside on Nov. 1 & 2.
(4) Rick & Chris Michaels defeated Sonny Siaki & Ron Harris to become the #1 contenders for the tag team titles. Tenay hypes how the non-brothers Michaels have been around for a while. Rick was a 4-time NWA tag champ with David Young, and Chris was a former NWA North American champ. Siaki & Harris dominate for most of the match as West observes that the Michaels are grossly overmatched. Tenay says Harris is with his third partner in three weeks to try and find the right combo to beat Harris & Storm. At the end of the match, Siaki had Rick pinned with the Samoan Pop (one man 3D) when Harris breaks up the count. Harris tells Siaki to hold Rick up for the big boot, but he misses and hits Siaki who is then pinned by Rick. After the match Ron & Siaki fight when security comes out to break them up. Don comes out and throws Siaki out of the ring. Leading to Tenay & West to speculate that there is something up between the Harrises. (I think I'm getting the feeling that TNA is trying to get ready for life after the Elvises if Jimmy Yang decides to go full time in All Japan.)
The crawler rolls again, as Tenay asks what the NWA will do about the X title match.
NWA official Bill Behrens is shown in the ring and announces that Lynn gets a match of his choice when he is ready to return from his injury, but, since he "won" the Iron Man match Ace Steel will get the shot at A.J. Styles for the X title tonight. Lo-Ki comes out to disagree and says if he would have taken the $200,000 from Plumtree he would have won the match. Plumtree & Steel come out, and Plumtree cuts a promo on Lo and includes the fight that he got into with Tammy Sytch. After Lo responds, Commissioner Armstrong comes out and announces that Lo & Ace will wrestle and the winner will get the shot at Styles.
(5) Lo-Ki defeated Ace Steel by reverse decision DQ. Steel jumps on Lo-Ki's injured ankle to start the match and chucks him outside the ring. Plumtree then drills Lo with a chair on his ankle leading to a countout win for Steel. It's then announced that Lo wins the match by DQ. Armstrong then goes in the ring and announces the division has been nothing but a headache for him and that all the X division wrestlers in the back can come out and wrestle Styles in the ladder match. Lo-Ki will not compete due to his ankle injury.
(6) Syxx wins the NWA X title in a ladder match over A.J. Styles, Kid Kash, the Maximos, Tony Mamaluke & Ace Steel. In the second train wreck styled match of the night. The match was filled with truly insane and extremely painful - and sometimes very ugly - spots. Some of the highlights: Mamaluke dropping Styles on his head twice with back suplexes. Styles springboard Shooting Star outside the ring. Mamaluke faling off the ladder and selling his wrist injury like he had been shot. Joel Maximo brother being hung tree of woe style in the corner, getting drilled with the other ladder by Styles and then being squashed between the two by his brother getting powerbombed into it. Kash hit a moonsault off the top of the ladder on Steel. Kash hitting a DDT off the top off the ladder on Joel. Kash hitting a missile dropkick into the ladder knocking off Mamaluke & Steel. Jose hitting a superplex off the ladders on Kash. At the end of the match, Styles clears the ring and climbs up slowly to take the belt. Syxx comes out of the back and back suplexes Styles off the ladder and climbs up and grabs the belt and the win. (if there is anybody in the X division left to wrestle next week it will be a surprise.)
