RADICAN’S KAYFABE COMMENTARIES REVIEW SERIES
“YOUSHOOT WITH KEVIN NASH”
BY SEAN RADICAN, TORCH COLUMNIST
“YouShoot with Kevin Nash” is one of the best editions of YouShoot I’ve seen, which speaks volumes, as the series has delivered time and time again with various guests in the past. The thing that makes this release stand out is Kevin Nash’s wit and humor. Nash, who spends most of the interview drinking wine and beer appears to be relaxed and gives a lot of good insight on the various questions he’s asked from written and video submissions.
Kayfabe Commentaries once again shows why they are on the cutting edge of the “shoot” genre, as they have significantly ramped up the production values for the “YouShoot” series by using a green screen. If Nash is playing “What’s in the bag?,” it looks like he and Oliver are sitting in a locker room. When Nash talks about his love of good red wine, Oliver and Nash are whisked away to a vineyard setting. The use of the green screen greatly enhances the entertaining value of this series and gives Kayfabe Commentaries a new set of tools at their disposal.
As funny as Nash is, there’s that thing about him where he brags about money in response to any critique’s people have about his career. Nash also doesn’t have anything bad to say about his closest friends in the business like Hogan, Triple H, and HBK, so when the expected questions about those people pop up, don’t be surprised at his answer or lack thereof. At one point, Oliver showed Nash footage of the Hogan sex tape and Nash looked very uncomfortable and instead of talking about the tape, Nash quips that he thought they were watching Dave Bautista in action.
Oliver shows clips of other Kayfabe Commentaries releases with various wrestlers talking about Kevin Nash. The highlight is the segment featuring a clip of Bob Holly sitting Nash, Hall, and HBK down and telling him not to bother him anymore. The look on Nash’s face while listening to Holly is priceless. Nash finally says if Holly had really done that, he would have been fired.
Of course, the drug culture is also discussed and Nash tells some scary stories about the drug culture in wrestling. Nash tells a story about Hall, himself, and an unnamed person that found Christ splitting 100 somas. Later on, Nash tells a story about Warlord handing HBK a syringe and asking him to inject only for HBK to find that he can’t get the needle into where it needs to go.
There are some surprising stories. Nash talks about Samoa Joe cutting a shoot promo on him and Hall at TNA’s Turning Point 2007. Nash said when Joe came backstage, he smacked him twice in the face after Joe told him the comments he made in the ring were unscripted and apologized the next day. It was surprising for Nash to tell this story, as Joe at one time had a reputation of being a tough guy when he was in ROH, but Nash makes him come off like a scolded dog in this story.
If you end up ordering this release, one of the funniest segments I’ve seen on a “YouShoot” is Nash and Oliver talking about picking up women at a bar. Oliver, Nash, and two women are sitting in front of a green screen of a bar and Oliver is pretending Nash isn’t there, but is giving him tips on how to pick up women. Nash goes through this big explanation of how you pick and choose which women to go after in a bar and at one point the topic turns to icebreakers. Oliver, who has been married for over ten years, says, “I found an ice breaker back in the day was to immediately take out some drugs.” If that doesn’t make you laugh, I don’t know what will.
Overall thoughts: (9.0) – This stacks up with the best editions of “YouShoot” that I’ve seen. Kayfabe Commentaries did a great job of ramping up their production values and Nash is the perfect guest for this vehicle. Although he protects his friends and passes off responsibility for some of the things he’s taken part of in wrestling, Nash is genuinely entertaining and funny. I highly recommend picking up this release.
