RADICAN’S DVD REVIEW SERIES
“FACEOFF VOL. 14: NEW JACK vs. BALLS MAHONEY”
RELEASED BY RF VIDEO 2012

The saying too good to be true came to mind when I began watching “Faceoff Vol. 14 New Jack vs. Balls Mahoney,” but after finally sitting down and watching this release, the saying truth is stranger than fiction is more appropriate. Last year, New Jack and Balls Mahoney had - from all accounts I’ve heard - a legitimate confrontation backstage at an Extreme Rising event in June. My sources tell me that Jack attacked Balls backstage before the fight was broken up.

Their issue goes back to New Jack talking about Balls hanging out with fans and doing some pretty disgusting things that I won’t recount here in a hotel room in what was supposed to be New Jack’s retirement shoot with RF Video in 2012. Then Balls did a shoot interview with RF Video calling using a racist term in reference to Jack based on the comments Jack made in his shoot interview.

I couldn’t help but laugh when Rob Feinstein began this release saying both guys are supposed to show up alone, so of course New Jack shows up first with a crew of people. Rob has New Jack’s friends searched by a friend of his who is a police officer. Instead of insisting New Jack’s friends leave, Feinstein allows them to stay. New Jack is searched and the cop pulls a machete out of his pants and tosses it in a garbage can for “safe keeping.”

The one thing that cop doesn’t find in his search is the keychain Jack is carrying with a can of mace attached to it, which comes into play later. The entertainment continues when Balls shows up alone like they agreed to and the interview begins.

They go into the CZW School to do the interview where Jack and Balls are set up sitting in chairs with a guardrail between them. Of course Jack is very angry and right away he tries to bait Balls into hitting him by verbally attacking Balls’s longtime girlfriend. Both guys yell at each other and it’s very much like watching an NC-17 verbal altercation between Daniel Bryan and Kane if such a thing were ever to take place.

As they get deeper into their issues, the big theme with Jack is that he is angry with Balls for being in bad shape because of his past drug use and the example he’s setting. Jack eventually brings in Ahtu, who some of you might recognize from his appearances in EVOLVE in the past, to talk about the confrontation between Jack and Balls backstage at the Extreme Rising show.

Of course, Ahtu is interrupted several times by both men, but eventually he says the confrontation was disturbing because it was like watching a pussy cat get attacked by an alley cat. Just watching Ahtu tell this story made me laugh because of the expression of disbelief on his face while he was telling it.

The climax of this Face Off is very different than what I was expecting when this whole feud started in 2012. The real reason Jack was mad at Balls has merit, but it’s totally unexpected in the sense that it is almost absurd that Jack sees himself and Balls on such a high plateau in the wrestling industry.

Overall, this was an entertaining release from RF Video. Rob Feinstein surprisingly was able to fill the role of Dr. Shelby quite well between Jack and Balls, who finally found a solution to their problems. If you’ve enjoyed New Jack shoots in the past, this is definitely one worth adding to your collection given how crazy things between him and Balls got during this interview.
