Ask the Specialists Roundtable #61
- Question from PWTorch reader Hollie S.: I have a question for the Roundtable - I've read different opinions on Seth Rollins's future in WWE. While he is Mr. Money In The Bank and routinely wins on Raw and Smackdown, I've seen what happens to people like Damien Sandow, Dolph Ziggler, etc. - wrestlers who are talented in ring and on the mic, but are not considered main event material. I think Rollins is tremendously talented, but I am concerned that his future booking will be weak. Will he have a successful cash-in? Is he a future WWE Heavyweight champion? I think and hope so. Your thoughts?
- "Mr. TV" Justin James (@Justin_M_James) responds: Hollie, I see Rollins as having a successful cash-in for sure. At the same time, I think that he is not just “Plan B” in the storyline, but in real life as well. With Rollins holding the MITB case, they have plenty of options and outs in case something goes wrong. Lesnar gets hurt? Have Rollins cash in on him. Etc. I definitely see Rollins as a future WWE Heavyweight champion. Being patient and holding off on the cash-in is great business sense for WWE.
- "Common Fan" Jimmy Eaton (@TheCommonFan) responds: You aren't the only one worried, Hollie! I also think Rollins and Dean Ambrose are the most talented in the company or certainly very high on the ladder. WWE tends to pull rugs out from under people with potential very quickly with another example being Cesaro.
I hope Rollins does have a successful cash-in, maybe even waiting until WrestleMania against a successful new champ (Roman Reigns) if he beats Brock Lesnar? One thing WWE has done fairly well recently is slow burn some angles, even if they did so in a "pulling teeth" fashion with someone getting a reaction they can't ignore (see Daniel Bryan). I actually believe Ambrose may get a real look before Rollins, but we can only hope WWE gives them both the chance to be the face of the company. They certainly have the ability to do so with size being the only thing against them. Thanks for the question!
- "Instant Reaction" Ben Tucker (@BTuckerTorch) responds: Unless Rollins truly aggravates management, I see him having a bright future. He has the Triple H stamp of approval and is one of the first "Triple H guys" who has been a true success. As long as he can find himself a unique character and stand out, he'll have a fine career.
- "Showstopper" Shawn Valentino responds: Thanks for your question, Hollie. I think the biggest surprise after the untimely break-up of The Shield has been Seth Rollins and his excellent portrayal of the weasely heel. He has convincingly depicted a smarmy persona that the audience can genuinely hate. Additionally, he provides evidence that a guy with cool, high-flying moves can still be a heel. I never understood the logic that it was not good for a bad guy to do acrobatic maneuvers. Shawn Michaels and Randy Savage are examples that prove an electrifying high-flier can be a villain through his attitude.
I do not think it is important if Rollins is able to cash in on his Money in the Bank match or not. It all depends on the story they decide to tell. If he loses the match, but he still tells a compelling story in the process, then he will not be harmed. Even if he does win, it all depends on how they follow up a successful cash-in. There have been winners that have cashed in, but they did not benefit. Jack Swagger is a great example. I believe Rollins can be a future Heavyweight champion, but if he does not win it, it does not mean he was not successful. Too many fans have been brainwashed into believing that every great wrestler deserves a run with the World championship. I think that he can definitely be an occasional main event player that is valuable no matter what position he is in the card, similar to Chris Jericho. I have been extremely impressed by what I have seen thus far in his solo run so hopefully he hones this heel act and stays that way for a couple years until an eventual babyface turn.
