Ahead of the latest Republican Party debate Wednesday night on CNN, long-time political reporter David Gergen looked at Donald Trump's role as a pro wrestling showman mixing it up with other candidates who think they're in a boxing match.

Gergen noted Trump's ties to WWE, ranging from WrestleMania IV and V at Trump Plaza in New Jersey to his "Battle of the Billionaires" feud with Vince McMahon surrounding WrestleMania 23.

Gergen also extended the wrestling vs. boxing analogy to suggest Trump is trying to break the rules of a logically-constructed back-and-forth boxing match by introducing steel chair shots to unsuspecting rivals.

As for the spectators watching the events unfold, Gergen writes: "By contrast (to boxing), pro wrestling fans understand they are watching a contest that is usually fixed, so that more than anything, they want to be entertained. They are not interested in logical conclusions or in points scored but in the passions of the show as 'good' wrestlers fight against 'evil' ones."

In actuality, the lack of logical conclusions is one of the chief frustrations wrestling fans have with WWE's booking. This is especially the case because WWE has control over the narrative and outcomes, which creates the perception that WWE intentionally tries to frustrate fans with illogical match conclusions or a lack of effort to fill storyline logic holes.
