In Brief: Ultimate Warrior’s certified autographs from 2008 Donruss products are hot sellers that usually fetch $50-100.

Card Show #11: The Ultimate Warrior

Monday’s announcement that the Ultimate Warrior will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame will undoubtedly bring increased interest to his collectibles. Despite all the knocks against him, Warrior was one of the most popular wrestlers of his era and his colorful, super hero-like appearance still appeals to kids today who never saw him wrestle.

Surprisingly, Warrior has been in very few trading card sets over the years. Topps has included legends in just about all of its WWE sets since 2005, but with Warrior on the outs with the company, he has never appeared on a Topps card.

As regular trading card products go, Warrior has only appeared in the 1989, 1990, and 1991 Classic WWF sets and the 2008 Americana, Celebrity Cuts, and Americana Sports Legends sets from Donruss (now Panini). The rest of his cards were issued in limited quantities outside of the U.S., inserted in WWF Magazine or included with products such as ice cream or videotapes.

Warrior’s most popular cards are his 2008 certified autograph cards from Panini. Panini used the same photo of the Warrior on all cards across all three sets, and there is very little difference between them. Warrior has two different Private Signings autograph cards from 2008 Americana: a basic autograph serial numbered to 250, and a combination autograph/relic card that also includes a swatch of Warrior’s trunks and is serial numbered to just 50 copies. The autograph typically sells for around $50, with the auto/trunks card selling in the $75-100 range.

According to the Americana Sports Legends checklist available at PaniniAmerica.net, Warrior has four different variations of his autograph in that product, which is card #43: Mirror Black (11), Mirror Emerald (/5), Mirror Gold (/25), and Mirror Blue (/128). Only the Mirror Blue has surfaced on eBay within the last 90 days, probably due in large part to the limited quantities of the other cards. The Mirror Blue autograph usually sells in the $45-50 range.

Some of Warrior’s oddball cards have popped up on eBay recently, selling for various amounts. A 1990 Super Stars of Wrestling: Series 3 card from Market-Scene Limited sold for a whopping $99.99 last October. According to information from WrestlingTradingCards.com, these cards were released exclusively in New Zealand.

Other unique Warrior cards that sold in recent months include a 1991 Swanson and 1991 Classic Printing Plate that was used to create the original card in that set. The pre-order cards for WWE 2K14 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 that gave gamers a code to unlock the Warrior have expired, but still sell as collectibles. Collectors are paying anywhere from $4-25 to get one.
