In A Sentence: As Bobby Roode has evolved from a member of Team Canada to one of the biggest stars in TNA, more and more collectors have been seeking out his cards, figures, and other merchandise.
For wrestling fans tired of the 50-something parade that has been trotted out on Impact Wrestling over the last couple years, the elevation of Bobby Roode as a top tier wrestler has been the most refreshing TNA story of the year.
Dating back to his days as a member of Team Canada, some astute observers pegged Roode as a future main-eventer. Many others weren’t so sure, but started to come around when he hooked up with James Storm to form Beer Money. What seemingly started out as a tag team of two guys whose singles pushes had stalled quickly became TNA’s hottest act.
The popularity of Roode’s collectibles has grown with his career. Pulling a Robert Roode autograph from an early box of TNA trading cards sometimes induced groans among collectors; today, many of those same collectors are seeking out his cards and other collectibles on eBay.
Roode is possibly on his way to becoming one of the top stars in TNA. Here’s a look at how his collectibles have evolved over the years.
Trading cards
Roode’s first cards were included in TRISTAR’s initial TNA offering, "TNA Impact," in 2008. When that product was released, Roode was struggling to find his niche in TNA and, as a result, his cards were pretty cold. At the time, his autograph from the 2008 Impact set sold for just a few dollars.
His first cards depict Roode playing up his Wall Street gimmick. In addition to a single autograph, Roode is also paired with former manager Payton Banks (a/k/a Rain) on a dual autograph card.
After that first set, Roode’s cards became considerably more popular. TRISTAR’s second TNA release, Cross the Line, went live shortly after Roode joined forces with Storm to form Beer Money. The value of Roode’s cards increased as Beer Money emerged as arguably TNA’s hottest act over the next couple years.
Since then, Roode’s signature has been included in every TNA set from TRISTAR, so there are plenty to be found. If you’re looking to add his autograph to your collection, you can expect to pay about $6-10. One of Roode’s coolest autographs is his 2009 Impact Gold Autograph, which is limited to 60 copies and inscribed “Beer Money!”
Roode’s signature also has been featured on many different multiple-autograph cards; dual Roode and Storm autographs can be found in almost every TNA set from 2008’s Cross the Line on, and usually sell in the $15-$20 range.
Action figures
Because he never spent time in WWE, Roode has very few action figures. ToyBiz produced two figures of Roode in the mid-2000s. One depicts him as Bobby Roode, the flag waving enforcer of Team Canada, while the other presents him as Robert Roode, complete with a black Rick Rude-like robe.
Due in large part to the poor quality of the figures, the ToyBiz line has never been particularly popular with collectors. These figures aren’t especially easy to find, but they still don’t command very high prices. Loose figures today sell in the $3-5 range, while those still in the package sell for around $10.
Roode’s most popular figure today is the one released as part of a Beer Money two-pack by Jakks Pacific in 2010. These two-packs originally sold at retailers like Toys-R-Us for about $16.99, but today sell for about $35-40 on the secondary market. A loose Roode figure by itself recently fetched $20 at auction.
Other collectibles
If you’ve ever been to a TNA house show, you know just how popular Beer Money shirts are. The merchandise stands seem to sell more shirts of Beer Money than anyone else.
ShopTNA.com has a few different Beer Money shirts available, including one that reads “Milk Money” and shows cartoon images of Roode and Storm as toddlers.
Discontinued Beer Money merchandise continues to be popular with fans as well. Older shirts and hats are still fetching around $25 on eBay; international buyers especially seem eager to snatch them up.
Interestingly enough, TNA’s official site still isn’t offering any merchandise of Roode as a solo wrestler. Keep an eye on the site; if Bound for Glory turns out to be Bobby Roode’s breakthrough pay-per-view, TNA could very likely offer some cool autographs and other memorabilia that may sell out very quickly.
