Report by Justin James, PWTorch contributor
[Q1] Hideo Itami starts the show off to a really nice pop. Nice to see him starting to get some traction, in no small part due to his Takeover: Rival performance. He's facing Bull Dempsey.
The announcers are Alex Riley, Corey Graves, and Tom Philips and Jojo in the ring.
1 - HIDEO ITAMI vs. BULL DEMPSEY
Bull pushes Itami into the corner, then beats on him. Itami builds some speed off the ropes, but runs into a back elbow. Dempsey continues to wear Itami down. Itami makes a small rally, but runs into Dempsey's massive mid-section. Itami fires up with kicks and strikes. Dropkick into the corner, running dropkick ends it.
WINNER: Hideo Itami in 2:55. Itami is back to his pre-Takeover booking of winning the war, but losing most of the battles.
Post-match, Tyler Breeze ambushes Hitami on the ramp, then uses his furry selfie-stick to take a picture, only to realize that Itami recovered behind him. Itami chases him into the ring, then kicks Breeze out of the ring and to the back.
[ J.J.'s Reax: Another round of Itami - Breeze would suit me just fine. ]
Pre-break, they advertise Finn Balor against The Brian Kendrick in the "folks I never thought I'd see back in the WWE" match of the week.
Video package on The Brian Kendrick going back to ancient history. Ezekiel Jackson, Shelton Benjamin, and Carlito make appearances and the voice of Jim Ross is heard. Flashbacks to Smackdown circa 2008.
The Lucha Dragons come out for a match. They are facing Jason Jordan and Tye Dillenger. But, Solomon Crowe interrupts. He says last week was a statement, he is on a mission to become NXT champion, and we've been warned. Apparently he can hack the WWE Network from an iPad.
2 - THE LUCHA DRAGONS (SIN CARA & KALISTO) vs. TYE DILLENGER & JASON JORDAN
Jordan controls for a moment, but Sin Cara tags in Kalisto. Jordan tosses Kalisto around. Sin Cara manages to tag in against Dillenger. Jordan wants to tag in once Dillenger regains control, but Dillenger tells him to relax. Kalisto gets offense against Dillenger. Dillenger gets Kalisto down, wants to tag Jordan but Jordan bails. SDS from Kalisto and the top rope senton end Dillenger.
WINNERS: The Lucha Dragons in 3:45. Nice showcase for the Lucha Dragons's skills, but I'm not sure what the benefit of teasing a break-up of Dillenger and Jordan is, unless it leads to singles matches for these two promising individuals.
[Q2] Backstage, Greg interviews Finn Balor. Balor says he can't look towards Kevin Owens until he gets past The Brian Kendrick, a former Tag Team champion.
After the break, Dillenger says he'll take on anyone until Jason Jordan comes out to face him. Baron Corbin hits the ramp instead. Dillenger looks like he may regret his words.
3 - BARON CORBIN vs. TYE DILLENGER
Corbin immediately knocks Dillenger down, then hits End of Days.
WINNER: Baron Corbin in 0:15. Corbin continues his dominant streak. It would be odd for the break-up of Dillenger and Jordan to merely be a way to put Corbin in a squash match.
Devin Taylor asks Charlotte about her re-match with Sasha Banks next week. Charlotte reminds us that Banks has never beaten her one-on-one.
Backstage selfie video with Tyler Breeze. He claims that Itami didn't get an advantage, but fell into his trap.
A new graphic with a glum Sami Zayn promising that Zayn will address the NXT Universe next week.
Video package on Zayn in Abu Dhabi.
4 - BAYLEY vs. BECKY LYNCH
They trade control on the mat to start, then trade shoulder blocks. Pump handle suplex gives Lynch control of the match. Three leg drops get a two count for Lynch. Bayley ejects Lynch from the ring, then does her new through-the-corner sliding dropkick. Bayley continues with signature offense. Bayley sells an arm injury. Bayley wants a Bayley-to-Belly, but Lynch reverses into an armbar and Bayley taps.
WINNER: Becky Lynch via submission in 4:30. Nice to see Lynch getting more offense and ring time. Is a match against Banks in the cards?
[Q3] Backstage, Devin Taylor asks Rhyno why he is in NXT. He heard people talking about NXT, decided to check it out, and saw highly-motivated wrestlers, the same as he is. He felt that a place like NXT was the place for him to be, and promises to get noticed by ripping NXT up with his Gore.
"Before the break" the cameraman catches up with Jason Jordan. He has few words.
Kevin Owens has been added to the booth for the Balor - Kendrick match.
5 - FINN BALOR vs. THE BRIAN KENDRICK
Balor gets Kendrick to the ropes on the lock-up. Balor controls Kendrick. Kendrick with a sunset flip, but Balor rolls through. Kendrick springs into the ring, but twists his ankle. Kendrick surprises Balor with a cover for two as Owens says that Balor's willingness to give Kendrick a break is why he will beat Balor.
Great shot of Alex Riley as Owens reminds Riley that he was never a champion, and the heel Riley solemnly says that he never had a championship, but he would never hurt a friend like that. Owens decides to just leave the booth before he does something he will regret.
[ Break ]
Balor is steam-rolling Kendrick out of the break. Running chop gets two for Balor. Kendrick gets a boot up, then hits a tornado DDT to finally stop Balor. Kendrick with a missile dropkick, then a tiger suplex into a bridge for a nearfall. Riley acts as if Kendrick hasn't wrestled since he was last in WWE. Slingblade from Balor, then the big dropkick to send Kendrink into the turnbuckle. Coup de Grace for the win.
WINNER: Finn Balor in 8:12. Decent enough match. Interesting to see if Kendrick is back for a single match or making a career change.
Post-match, Kevin Owens re-appears on the ramp to glare at Balor. He eyes Riley, then dumps Riley over the booth. Balor poses in the ring as the crowd goes silent. Balor invites Owens to the ring, but Owens walks away.
Final Reax: Perfectly fine episode setting up the next few months until the next Takeover special.
