Report by Justin James, PWTorch contributor

[Q1] Wesley Blake and Buddy Murphy come down the ramp to kick the show off with their match against the Lucha Dragons for the NXT Tag Team championship. Not much crowd support for the Lucha Dragons.

Alex Riley, Jason Albert, and Tom Philips are in the announcers booth and Jojo is the ring announcer. Nice to hear Tom Philips on NXT (though Rich Brennan has been doing great), but I hope he can get back to the main roster soon.

1 - NXT tag champions LUCHA DRAGONS (SIN CARA & KALISTO) vs. WESLEY BLAKE & BUDDY MURPHY - NXT Tag Team Championship match

Sin Cara and Murphy start. Murphy forces Sin Cara to the corner, but Sin Cara executes a double armdrag to get away from a double team. Dropkick from Murphy grounds Sin Cara. Basic offense from Blake, then a single-arm deadlift powerbomb draws a double tag. Kalisto's hot tag offense dazzles as the ref struggles to control the match. Blind tag lets Blake sneak in the win after Kalisto hits the SDS on Murphy.

WINNERS: Wesley Blake & Buddy Murphy in 4:02 to capture the NXT Tag Titles. The Lucha Dragons have been pretty much dead-on arrival and not connecting with the audience outside of Kalisto's offense. Blake and Murphy are also quite athletic. Odd to see a title change in a match just thrown out there on NXT, though.

Backstage, Bayley is lacing her boots. Charlotte comes in and brings up Bayley attacking her. Bayley starts to apologize for it, then stops and says that maybe she has been too nice, but she wants to play nice tonight. Charlotte tells her that Bayley will stay in-line or else she will destroy Bayley.

Selfie video from Tyler Breeze. He says he lost last week, but he's not embarrassed. He's going to watch the tournament closely.

Either something has gone wrong with the feed, or Tyson Kidd has some weird thing as part of his entrance now.

2 - ADRIAN NEVILLE vs. TYSON KIDD - #1 Contender Tournament match

[Q2] Rapid trading of control to start. Neville kicks away from an attempted leg hold to reset the match. They return to mat wrestling. A boot from Kidd sends the match into a striking affair. Neville with amazing speed and fluidity. Kidd heads to the outside and Neville lets him have a break. Kidd slides across the ring corner to reset the count.

Kidd jumps in the ring then back out to reset again. Neville chases, but Kidd takes him out. Kidd with a huracanrana to send Neville into the ring steps face-first. Neville makes it in at nine, Kidd covers but Neville grabs a rope. Neville is still selling his head/face.

[ Break ]

Kidd is continuing his attack on Neville out of the break. Kidd telegraphs a body drop, then Neville hits a sunset flip, but Kidd rolls through counters with a basement dropkick into a cover for two. Kidd stomps Neville's head into the apron.

Neville springs to life and clotheslines Kidd to the outside. Neville dives over the ropes to plant Kidd into the ramp. Neville sustains his momentum in the ring. Standing moonsault gets him two. Kidd dumps Neville into the ropes and hits a spinning neckbreaker for a nearfall. Neville gets boots up in the corner and schoolboys Kidd, but Kidd rolls through and transitions to a suplex. Neville lands on his feet and kicks Kidd then hits a vicious powerbomb for a nearfall.

Neville to the apron for a springboard move, but Kidd dropkicks him to the ringside. Cover almost gets Kidd the win. Kidd wants the Sharpshooter, but Neville kicks away. Big kick drops Kidd near the corner. Neville to the top for Red Arrow and the win.

WINNER: Adrian Neville in 12:50. Really great in-ring action as you would expect. Too bad this was a tournament match with no build or issue between these two, though.

The new interviewer asks Neville about the prospect of facing the winner of Baron Corbin vs. Bull Dempsey. Neville acknowledges their size and strength, but says he'll return to being champion.

Backstage interview with Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks. They say they are going to win tonight, and Lynch knows to help her win at Takeover. Banks leaves and Lynch vows to win the NXT Women's Championship.

[Q3] Backstage interview with Wesley Blake and Buddy Murphy. They give a babyface promo, putting over the Lucha Dragons and vowing to be fighting champions. This is at odds with their in-ring style earlier.

3 - NXT Women's champion CHARLOTTE & BAYLEY vs. SASHA BANKS & BECKY LYNCH - Tag Team match

Bayley and Banks start things. Shoulder block puts Bayley down, then Bayley responds with one of her own. Armdrags from the corner for Bayley. Charlotte tags in and immediately covers Banks for one. Banks runs to make the tag, then Charlotte wrecks Lynch. Bayley tags in and takes it to Lynch. Lynch distracts the ref to let Banks hit offense from outside.

Lynch with a trio of leg drops into a cover for two and Charlotte is hungry for the tag. Bayley blocks a suplex from Lynch and hits one of her own. Double tag and Charlotte is out for blood. Bridging figure-four leglock and Lynch breaks it up, then pays the price.

Banks uses the distraction to hit Bankrupt, but Bayley breaks up the pin and accidentally clocks Charlotte. Bayley tries to apologize, but Charlotte pushes her. Bayley struggles to control her temper, then loses it. Charlotte beats the stuffing out of Bayley. Banks and Lynch join in and it turns into a full brawl. Ref calls for the bell.

Post-match, Charlotte and Bayley chase Banks and Lynch from the team then resume their fight. Refs pour out to break them up.

WINNERS: No result in 6:00. Really solid match telling a great story. The rare non-finishes in NXT make this one so much more impactful, as I can't remember there ever being a non-finish in NXT.

Backstage, Devin Taylor interviews Finn Balor and asks him how he will feel about facing Hideo Itami in the tournament next week. He knew they'd meet someday, but he didn't know it would be this soon. He says that all bets are off for friendship in a match like this. Hideo interrupts. He says that he broke into NXT, and will take out Balor if needed.

Backstage, Devin Taylor interviews Emma, who is returning to NXT next week. Emma says that things did not quite work out as she had planned. She vows a fresh start and a match against Carmella next week.

[ J.J.'s Reax: Emma is Exhibit A that a loyal following at FSU can't guarantee main roster success. Between a gimmick that isn't really mainstream and a lack of introduction, Emma had little chance to succeed. ]

4 - BARON CORBIN vs. BULL DEMPSEY - #1 Contender Tournament match

[Q4] The crowd starts counting, but Dempsey weathers the first 30 seconds of the match. Shoulder block puts Dempsey down, then he heads to ringside. Corbin gives chase, but Dempsey gets the edge back in the ring. Corbin puts Dempsey in the corner, then rolls over the ropes to slap Dempsey. End of Days and Dempsey is down for the count.

WINNER: Baron Corbin in 1:40. I guess that is the end of the Corbin vs. Dempsey feud. That was really disappointing, other than putting over Corbin really hard. The real test will be Corbin facing Neville to see how he does in a real match.

Backstage, Devin Taylor interviews Baron Corbin. He says he will beat Neville next week. Dempsey says that Corbin got lucky twice and says it won't happen again. Corbin pie-faces him and walks away.

In-ring, Willing Regal is ready for the contract signing. He introduces NXT champion Sami Zayn. Zayn shows respect to Regal. The crowd is booing even before Kevin Owens is introduced. Regal gives Zayn a look that says, "Are you sure you want this?" as Owens comes to the ring. Zayn is focused on Owens. Regal says that this won't go like every other contract signing and end in a brawl. Any physicality will see the match canceled.

Zayn signs the contract without hesitation. Owens just stares Zayn down. Zayn asks if Owens will just stare at him or explain his actions. Zayn decides to do the talking and explain their history. He says he should have seen this coming, but he didn't because everything they did in the past was to get to NXT. He never imagined that Owens would do what he did on the night that the both arrived. Zayn says he will beat the hell out of Owens at Takeover, a rare display of anger.

Owens takes the mic and says that the contract says non-title match. Owens says it was business, not personal. But, he fights for a prize. Zayn isn't the prize, the title is because it means more money to support him and his family. Owens refuses to sign a non-title match. Regal reminds Owens that this was going to be non-title.

Zayn demands that it be a championship match. Zayn says that Owens, himself, and the crowd all want a championship match. Zayn is insanely fired up. The crowd breaks out into "Yes!" chants. Regal edits the contract on the spot to make it a championship match, Zayn initials the change. Owens signs, then throws the pen at Zayn. Regal stops Zayn from attacking Owens with calm words as Owens silently leaves. Regal is fuming.

[ J.J.'s Reax: Best contract signing in a long, long time. Perfectly done. So what happens at Takeover? Does Zayn have to do two championship matches, one against the Tournament winner and one against Owens? Having him beat the tournament winner and lose to Owens would be a great way to put even more sympathy on Zayn and not lose any prestige and continue the issue with Owens. ]

Final Reax: Outstanding episode of NXT. The only complaint is the sudden title switch for the tag team titles. I'd rather see Emma on NXT than never see her on the main roster. The women's division continues its logical path. The Zayn - Owens situation is red-hot and could sell tickets and PPVs if presented like this on the main roster.
