[Q1] NXT has moved to Wednesdays, even though the episode is listed on the WWE Network as the "January 15" episode.
Rich Brennan, Renee Young, and Alex Riley are in the booth with Jojo as the ring announcer.
Tyson Kidd starts the show off with his hooded ring jacket and headphones. He gets a mixed reaction. He is facing Finn Balor, who gets a big pop from the crowd. Some new camera angles accentuate his theatrical entrance. NXT has just nailed the presentation on Balor perfectly.
1 - FINN BALOR vs. TYSON KIDD
Dropkick from Balor, but Kidd rolls under a double foot stomp. Balor continues to press the attack on Kidd. Hesitation dropkick, but Kidd bails to the outside as Balor sets up a foot stomp. Kidd heads to the back, but Balor tosses him back in. Kidd suckers Balor to the outside, then knocks a barricade a few feet back and smashes Balor into it. Snapmare on the outside and the crowd is turning hard on Kidd. The crowd chants "Finn's gonna kill you!" so Kidd challenges Balor to kill him as he embarrasses Balor.
[ False break ]
Kidd is continuing to attack Balor. Kidd puts Balor in the Tree of Woe after a struggle. Suplex from Kidd barely gets one. Tight headlock draws a dueling "Let's Go Tyson/Let's Go Finn" from the crowd. Pele kick from Balor gives Balor the separation he needs to recover. Balor rallies. Big enziguiri knocks Kidd off the turnbuckle and to the outside, followed by a massive flip dive. Both men are slow to recover. Kidd fails to ambush Balor returning to the ring, but Balor gets caught spring-boarding in and Kidd leg screws him in. Springboard elbow drop gives Kidd a nearfall.
Kidd looks for the Sharpshooter and locks it in mid-ring after a struggle. The crowd rallies Balor to keep him from tapping. Kidd re-applies mid-ring, but Balor barely gets to the ropes. Balor dodges the guillotine leg drop, muscles Kidd into the ring, then drops Kidd with a lifted DDT. Foot stomp from the top ends Kidd.
WINNER: Finn Balor in 8:30. Really superb match. Kidd got heat the old fashioned way: get in strong offense against a popular babyface with a good win-loss record. Storytelling 101 here on fine display. Balor is such a great talent and Kidd did his part perfectly.
[Q2] Video package showing Sami Zayn's path to the NXT Championship.
Devin Taylor interviews Bull Dempsey. He reminds us that he is also undefeated. He says that he will beat Baron Corbin soundly.
2 - BARON CORBIN vs. BULL DEMPSEY
Dempsey immediately unloads on Corbin, but Corbin explodes out of the corner. Mid-ring brawl. Back elbow takes Dempsey down, but he slips under the ropes to frustrate Corbin. It gets ugly on the outside. Corbin gets ambushed coming into the ring, but lands a stout right to the middle. Corbin steamrolls Corbin with his belly but Corbin rolls under the diving headbutt. End of Days and Dempsey is down.
WINNER: Baron Corbin in 1:40. I can't believe that a match that ran under two minutes will be the end of this feud, unless the point was to put Corbin over hard. If so, mission accomplished.
Next, Charlotte is almost laughing at Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch on her way to the ring. Total dominance.
3 - NXT Women's champion CHARLOTTE & NATALYA vs. SASHA BANKS & BECKY LYNCH - Tag Team match
Natlya and Lynch square off. They trade control on the mat. Some very smooth sequences here. The match turns into a brawl and Lynch heads outside to cover. Twin baseball slides from Charlotte and Natalya to take the fight outside. Natalya and Charlotte land a double delayed suplex on Lynch. More double teaming from Natalya and Charlotte, but Lynch scampers to her corner for a tag.
Natalya hits trademark offense on Banks, but she turns it around. The double knees in the ropes draws the ref to check on Natalya. Charlotte is hungry for a tag as Banks works on Natalya. Charlotte gets the tag and takes down Banks. Banks escapes a suplex, but Charlotte reverses the counter-neckbreaker with one of her own, but Lynch breaks up the cover. Banks hits a neckbreaker and holds the trunks to get the pin.
WINNERS: Sasha Banks & Becky Lynch in 4:50. This was shaping up to be a good match until the rushed end. Probably making time for the Neville vs. Zayn re-match.
[Q3] Adrian Neville and Sami Zayn come out for their big re-match for the NXT Championship. Renee Young reminds us that Neville has used his tricks to beat Zayn in the past. Polite reception for Neville. Hard to imagine that he got more popular for losing the title, but he did.
4 - NXT champion SAMI ZAYN vs. ADRIAN NEVILE - NXT Championship match
They have a respectful handshake to start, then lock up. Zayn with confidence. Neville is searching for an opening. Arm drag sends Zayn across the ring. Big back drop from Zayn, but Neville lands on his feet. Zayn rests in the corner a bit and Neville gives him the time. Zayn wrangles Neville to the mat. Zayn holds onto the ropes to make Neville miss a dropkick to gain an edge. Neville gets frustrated, pushes Zayn, then apologizes. Zayn is mad and clocks Neville in response. Neville comes off the mat and responds. The match is suddenly red-hot.
Neville sends Zayn to the outside and he sells an injury from hitting the barricade, then Neville goes flying over the top. Zayn on the mat and Neville on his feet heading to break.
[ Break ]
Neville has Zayn in the corner out of the break. Big cross-body from the top gets two for Zayn. Neville floats over on a suplex and then Zayn runs right into a huracanrana out of nowhere into a cover for a nearfall. Zayn sells a head injury on the mat, but Zayn grabs his boot to keep him from going to the top for the Red Arrow. Neville blocks a Blue Thunder Bomb and Neville elbows Zayn in the head. Blue Thunder Bomb from nowhere gets a close nearfall. A trio of German suplexes, and Zayn throws on the third, but Neville lands on his feet.
Neville back flips right into an electric chair position but turns it into a huracanrana that sees Zayn hit his head hard on the mat. Cover for a nearfall. Zayn is half-stunned on the mat. Neville is trying to move him, but Zayn is dead weight. Neville shows concern for Zayn and the ref does, too. The ref allows Neville to continue, but Zayn is obviously in bad shape. Zayn surprises Neville with a DDT into the Koji Clutch, but Neville escapes.
[Q4] Suplex from Zayn, but Neville rolls out of the ring before a Helluva Kick connects. Zayn wants the Torpedo DDT, but Neville catches him with a dropkick as he flies through the corner. Zayn is out mid-ring. Neville to the top, Red Arrow, and Zayn rolls away, but Neville lands on his feet, Zayn charges the Helluva Kick, Neville dodges, rolls him up from behind, and Zayn rolls through into a bridging cover for a nearfall. Exploder suplex into the turnbuckle from Zayn. Helluva Kick follows and Zayn retains.
WINNER: Sami Zayn in 12:10. Crazy match at the end; great build and story here. The second big huracanrana from Neville was downright scary to watch, as Zayn looked like he took a lot of force to his head and neck. After Corey Graves's concussion-caused retirement, that was not nice to watch.
Post-match, Kevin Owens attacks Zayn. Pop-up powerbomb draws big heat from the crowd. Owens puts a foot on Zayn's neck and jaw, then inspects his handiwork and leaves.
Final Reax: Another outstanding night from NXT. My big complaint was the hurried women's tag match. I am also interested to see if the short Corbin vs. Dempsey match was just a stepping stone for Corbin or just a lead-in to something bigger.
