[Q1] William Regal, Tom Philips, and Byron Saxton have the call.
The show starts with Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady. The entire crowd can recite his intro to his promo. They promise to diss, disrepect, and disfigure "Pepe Lepew." The crowd is really into these two. On cue, Sylvester Lefort and Marcus Lois come out. Lefort dumps on Cassady and Amore and New Jersey.
1 - COLIN CASSADY (w/Enzo Amore) vs. SYLVESTER LEFORT (w/Marcus Lois)
William Regal makes some cracks on France, and Lefort manages to get a smidge of offense in before Cassady hits the East River Crossing and the Empire Elbow for the win.
WINNER: Colin Cassady in 0:49. I think if a Lefort match manages to go more than three minutes it will be a record.
Backstage, Devin Taylor congratulates NXT champion Adrian Neville on his win against Rob Van Dam. Neville does not get much time before Tyler Breeze comes in. Breeze congratulates Neville, not for beating Van Dam, but for being able to concentrate on him when Breeze was only a few feet away. Neville says he doesn't care when Breeze cashes in his #1 contender opportunity. Breeze says he cannot do it tonight, because he hurt his hand in a hand modeling accident, and shows a finger splint.
Sami Zayn is billed as facing Justin Gabriel. Of note, Byron Saxton is doing the voiceovers that Scott Stanford usually does.
Quick video package summarizing Bull Dempsey's debut.
Charlotte and Sasha Banks come out. They are facing Bayley and Becky Lynch. Let's home we can see more of Lynch this week and what she can do. Inset promo from Bailey introducing Becky Lynch as new hew "BFF forever."
2 - BAYLEY & BECKY LYNCH vs. THE BFFS (CHARLOTTE & SASHA BANKS) - Tag Team match
Bayley and Banks start things off. Bayley controls Banks and takes in Lynch. Lynch shows a fast-pace style, with lots of arm drags. Bayley and Lynch work over Charlotte in their corner. Double suplex draws Banks into the ring, and she gets sent ringside.
[ Break ]
[Q2] Bayley is getting a beating from the BFFs in their corner and Lynch is flipping out over their tactics. Figure Four headlock on Bayley. They crowd rallies Bayley. Extended beat down on Bayley. Bayley manages to break free and Lynch nails Banks with uppercuts and clotheslines and leg drops. Running leg drop into a cover draws Charlotte in to break up a pin, Bayley is in but Charlotte dumps her. Charlotte tags in and dropkicks Lynch's knee. Bow Down to the Queen ends it.
WINNERS: The BFFs in 9:16. What is the plan with Lynch? she isn't getting enough ring time to show much of her move set or personality, and she just took a loss after only a few moments in the ring off a hot tag. This isn't the way to get her over.
Post-match, Banks trash talks in Lynch's face, so Bayley clears her from the ring.
Backstage, Devin Taylor interviews Justin Gabriel. Gabriel (wearing skeleton gloves like Barry Weiss from Storage Wars) says Zayn reminds him of himself not long ago, hungry and talented. Tyson Kidd comes in and reminds Gabriel that he is a main roster star, and that he lost to Adrian Neville. Gabriel reminds Kidd that he lost to Neville too. Kidd says that Gabriel is in purgatory, and the way out is to climb over everyone else. Gabriel vows to prove Kidd wrong by beating Zayn.
Backstage, Banks wants to know why Charlotte didn't help her against Bayley. Charlotte says they won't be teaming up anymore, but they can stay friends. Banks tries to remind her what she gave up to help Charlotte. Apparently, Summer Rae is facing Bayley to determine the #1 contender for the NXT Women's Championship.
C.J. Parker has new music and a new entrance video to match his new earth loving heel persona.
3 - STEVE CUTLER vs. C.J. PARKER
Parker with early offense gets Cutler into the corner. Parker lectures the audience as he beats up Cutler. Heel kick ends it.
WINNER: C.J. Parker in 1:47. Basic match to re-establish Parker in the ring. Post-match, Parker kicks Cutler out of the ring and gets a mic. He reminds us that Xavier Woods is close to getting a PhD, but says that since he left NXT he has been a buffoon. He wouldn't squander opportunities like Woods has.
[ J.J.'s Reax: effective transformation of the C.J. Parker character and a decent promo, he's finally finding his voice. ]
[Q3] Formal interview with Renee Young and Tyson Kidd. "No questions are off limits." She wants to know why he didn't shake Neville's hand at the end of Takeover. Kidd says he wasn't emotionally straight. She then asks why he shrugged off Natalya and the interview at the Takeover Fallout. He blames his mental state and says that he didn't mean to blow Natalya off. Young asks about his near win in his re-match, and he says that he was glad Natalya was there to see Neville's foot on the ropes, and thanks her for stopping him from bringing the chair into the match.
Young asks why he walked out on the tag team match with Zayn, he says he wasn't emotionally prepared with the match because Natalya set it up. Young asks about the folks who are calling him a "baby" on social media, and Kidd says that these people don't understand him or his relationship. He says he isn't getting bothered by the "Natalya's husband" chants. Young asks if he was bothered by being in her shadow, and he says that he isn't in her shadow and it wouldn't bother him. She asks if he is having marital problems. She no sells the question and walks off.
[ J.J.'s Reax: I liked the intention of this piece, it felt like the kind of thing ESPN might do. It also gave an additional depth to Tyson Kidd's character and his quest for respect and recognition. ]
Bayley vs. Summer Rae is set for next week to determine the #1 contender to the NXT Women's Championship.
4 - SAMI ZAYN vs. JUSTIN GABRIEL (w/Tyson Kidd)
They trade control early on. "Nattie's husband" chant directed at Kidd. Gabriel and Zayn reset, then go back to technical wrestling. Another reset and more technical wrestling. An arm drag from Gabriel starts to shift the tempo of the pace. Arm drags from Zayn, then mat work. Kidd gives Gabriel some advice after a rope break. Gabriel pops Zayn with a clothesline, and he looks to Kidd with satisfaction. Gabriel with a suddenly heelish attack.
[ Break ]
[Q4] They are trading blows out of the break. Jumping kick gets two for Gabriel. Side suplex finally breaks Zayn free but he gets knocked right back down. Zayn finally gets some traction. Blue Thunderbomb gets a nearfall for Zayn. Jaw breaker gets Gabriel some space, but Zayn responds with an exploder suplex to send Gabriel into the turnbuckles for a nearfall.
Gabriel ducks the Hulluva Kick and responds with a thrust kick for a nearfall. Shoulder breaker gets a nearfall for Gabriel. Another nearfall for Gabriel after a springboard moonsault. Gabriel looks furious. Gabriel goes up top, but Zayn knocks him to the turnbuckle. They trade blows on the turnbuckle. Zayn suddenly trips up Gabriel and locks in a Koji Clutch for a submission victory.
WINNER: Sami Zayn in 13:50. Lots of meat for fans of technical wrestling here, but a bit of a letdown if you really wanted to see a fast-paced match between these two.
Post-match, Kidd ambushes Zayn as Gabriel recovers. Gabriel doesn't seem thrilled, but Kidd holds Zayn and encourages Gabriel to join in, which he eventually does. Adrian Neville makes the save and Kidd and Gabriel leave the ring with no physical contact.
Overall Reax: Nice to have a night without the Vaudevillains or The Ascension. C.J. Parker's re-re-re-re-debut was decent. The BFF breakup is being handled well. I wanted to see a faster paced match between Zayn and Gabriel, but what we got was a good match all the same.
