Taped at Full Sail University
Report by Justin James, PWTorch contributor
Pre-credits recap of the Tyson Kidd - Adrian Neville match from last week. Excellent package that really enhanced both Kidd and Neville.
Backstage at Raw "last Monday," Natalya pitched a Sami Zayn/Tyson Kidd tag team partnership to JBL.
William Regal, Tom Philips, and Byron Saxton are in the booth.
Very hot crowd at Full Sail University, instantly cooled off by Sasha Banks coming out with Charlotte and Summer Rae. Charlotte and Summer Rae are glaring at each other.
Alexa Bliss is out to a polite reception. I'm curious to see who is taller here.
1 - ALEXA BLISS vs. SASHA BANKS (w/Charlotte and Summer Rae)
Banks pushes Bliss, and I do think Banks is a touch taller. Shoulder block puts Bliss down. Bliss with some athleticism, wheelbarrows into an arm drag. Bliss with more slick moves. Monkey flip, but Banks blocks a leg takedown. Banks blocks a head scissors and transitions to a backbreaker. Banks with a surfboard, careful to keep her shoulders off the mat. Charlotte and Summer Rae jockey with each other ringside to be closer to the action. The argument is becoming a distraction for Banks. Banks goes to the ropes to yell at them, letting Bliss surprise Banks with a roll-up for the win.
WINNER: Alexa Bliss in 3:45. Bliss has the talent in terms of her speed and agility, what she needs is some more time to get comfortable with her moveset. She seems hesitant at times. I am quickly becoming sold on her presentation, though.
Post-match, Charlotte and Summer Rae end up nearly starting a brawl, Banks tries to stop them, and it's a full three-way split as the crowd chants "Triple Threat."
Backstage, Natalya talks to Tyson Kidd. He says she cost him the title. She points out that using a chair is an automatic disqualification. He gets snippy with her, saying that he didn't need her to go to JBL for a tag team title shot. He acts like his masculinity is hurt because his wife is trying to help him out. Natalya is wounded.
Backstage, a 1920s style film with Aiden English and the new circus strongman-like character introduced last week, as they vow to take over the WWE.
Mojo Rawley is out with his usual high-energy entrance. His opponent looks scared of the entrance itself.
2 - MOJO RAWLEY vs. GARRETT DYLAN
Dylan has a hog on his trunks. He looks like he is cut from the Arn Anderson cloth. Rawley gets Dylan in the corner, but a drop toe hold sends Rawley's face into the turnbuckle. Side slam gets two for Dylan. Dylan with an county fair exhibition style of brawling.
[Q2] Rawley with a hip toss to escape an abdominal stretch. Big rights and a shoulder tackle from Rawley, followed by a pair of Stinger Splashes, Rear View, and Hyperdrive for the win.
WINNER: Mojo Rawley in 3:30. I really liked Dylan here, he was a real throwback, much like Scott Dawson. Rawley reminds me even more of John Cena with his finishing sequence.
Backstage, Sami Zayn checks in on Tyson Kidd. Zayn says that they both took some big losses, but he's excited for a tag team title shot. Zayn and Kidd would make a great tag team, just saying.
C.J. Parker with more environmentally-friendly signs. Edit Stiles lets us know that Tyler Breeze has entered the building. Aiden English and his new partner come out with a 1920s style introduction. The partner (introduced as Simon Gotch) holds a microphone up to the megaphone that English holds. They are the "Vaudvillains." Regal tells is that Gotch was born in a circus, his mother is the bearded lady.
3. -THE VAUDVILLIANS (AIDEN ENGLISH & SIMON GOTCH) vs. ANGELO DAWKINS & TRAVIS TYLER - Tag Team match
Dawkins with a big takedown on Gotch, then Gotch turns it around and does one-armed push-ups on Dawkins's back. Tyler is in, then English comes in to dominate him. Tyler is selling like a champ here a English and Gotch work over his arm. Rolling senton from Gotch followed by a sweet second rope senton from English put it away.
WINNERS: The Vaudvillains in 3:18. I liked a lot of the ring work here, especially from English, but I feel like this is one of those gimmicks that distracts more than it enhances. This would be at home in the 1980s cartoon era.
Devin Taylor interviews Colin Cassady. He says that things have been going as smooth as fine grained leather, but something is missing. He sings "that's amore" but doesn't actually say "that's amore." Yes, that is exactly what has been missing from this show, Enzo Amore.
"Be a Father" ad with Roman Reigns and a postal worker peeping tom'ing on him doing "I'm a little teapot" with his daughter. Much better than the Del Rio ad.
Backstage, Devin Taylor has Rob Van Dam. He says he is here to check out NXT. He adds that Raw and Smackdown are really good, and that's because they came through NXT. Everyone, Rob? He says he wants to wrestle Adrian Neville because he is the best in NXT.
Kalisto is out with some crowd support to face Tyler Breeze. He gets a lot more support when he isn't facing The Ascension.
[Q3]
4 - KALISTO vs. TYLER BREEZE
Breeze with an early advantage on the lock-up, but Kalisto slips around him. Kalisto's speed impresses. Breeze slows it down and wraps himself around Kalisto on the mat. Kalisto finally escapes The World's Longest Headlock and does some really slick moves to send Breeze out of the ring and get the crowd firmly behind him.
False commercial break, and Breeze is stomping on Kalisto in the corner. Kalisto is grounded again. The entire crowd is supporting Kalisto now, desperate to see more of his flashy offense. Breeze with a trio of two counts. Breeze with yet another front facelock.
Kalisto rolls onto the apron and gets a kick in to stun Breeze, then hits a springboard cross-body. Both men are down for a double count. They are up at nine to reset. Schoolboy into an enziguiri on the mat and Kalisto covers for two. Kalisto embarrasses Breeze, but walks into the Beauty Shot.
WINNER: Tyler Breeze in 10:50. This match made perfect logical sense, but was incredibly un-entertaining. It think that seven or eight minutes of it was a headlock or front facelock from Breeze. The crowd was very hungry to see Kalisto's offense, and came to life and on his side when they got it, but Breeze kept him grounded the whole match. I can't wait to see more of Kalisto in a match with less mat game.
Scott Stanford announces Adrian Neville against Rob Van Dam for next week. That is a potentially good match.
Eden Stiles tells us that Tyler Breeze has left the building.
[Q4] The crowd manages to chant "Ole!" in turn to Sami Zayn's ska music. Why can't The Ascension be as exciting in the ring as they are on their way to the ring?
5 - NXT tag champions THE ASCENSION (KONNOR O'BRIAN & RICK VICTOR) vs. TYSON KIDD & SAMI ZAYN - Tag Team Title match
Victor and Zayn start things off. Victor's strong offense is too much for Zayn. Zayn wants a tag but Victor sends him to the corner for O'Brian to come in. Zayn takes a beating in the corner. Zayn is reeling. Kidd looks almost like he has given up as Zayn is cut off from the corner again. Kidd goes to the ramp and acts as if Zayn isn't trying to tag out. Zayn clears O'Brian from the apron, breaks free of Victor, but Kidd is still acting like a baby on the outside, letting O'Brian flatten Zayn. Fall of Man and it is over.
WINNERS: The Ascension in 4:58. The story of the match was the continuation of Tyson Kidd's slow burn as a heel.
Overall Reax: The Tyson Kidd heel turn is being really well handled, but I feel like they could use a Kidd-free episode here and there to stretch it out longer and give some other folks time to shine. The Vaudvillains are ridiculous. The BFF split is also being handled well with an obvious issue that does not need much talking time to explain.
