[Q1] Pre-show video package recaps the history between William Regal and Kassius Ohno, and their slow burn to tonight's match. This is the best video NXT has produced that I recall.
The show opens with The Shield coming out to face Percy Watson, Axel Keegan, and Scott Dawson. It's Brad Maddox and Tom Phillips on commentary. The bell doesn't even ring before a brawl breaks out. The Shield quickly dumps the trio out of the ring and the ref has the bell rung to start the match.
1 - THE SHIELD vs. PERCY WATSON & AXEL KEEGAN & SCOTT DAWSON - six-man tag match
Scott Dawson takes coordinated offense in the corner. Dawson slips away from Ambrose, but Keegan's hot tag is quickly cut off. The action breaks down for no good reason, letting Rollins land the Skywalker for the victory.
WINNER: The Shield in 2:30. There was no logic to this match at all, but the action was fun for a minute. Why is The Shield even on NXT?
Post-match, Dawson takes a beating, then a triple powerbomb. Ambrose summons a mic. They say that justice has been served. Rollins says they run Raw, Smackdown, and NXT. He forgot Main Event and Superstars.
Just as they're wrapping up, Corey Graves gets on the Tron and reminds them that they ruined his title chances twice. He says that he's standing up to them because he runs NXT, not them. He challenges them to a match next week, one-on-one and promises that they will stay down. The crowd isn't sure which of these fan favorites to back. Rollins accepts responsibility for the situation with Graves, and says that he'll handle Graves.
[ JJ's Reax: Good promos all around, and I highly look forward to seeing Graves face Rollins, given their respective talents and ring styles. ]
Backstage, Tony Dawson is interviewing Summer Rae. She objects to not being called "the first lady of NXT." He reintroduces her as asks why she ran out of last week's match. She says that she left her curling iron on and had to leave for safety. Even Paige should thank her for saving everyone.
Backstage, Renee Young interviews Emma and asks what he experiences are like so far. She says her journey has been like Lady Gaga's, but Young is incredulous. Then She says it's more like Madonna's. Young asks her if she is a klutz, but Emma says that her dance moves are tricky. She trips on her way out.
[ JJ's Reax: Bad segment. Emma's current gimmick is a wreck. ]
[Q2]
2 - THE FUNKADACTYLS vs. THE BELLA TWINS - Tag Team match
It's Brie and Naomi to start. Naomi with some innovative offense using her rear end. cameron gets a piece of the action. Nikki with a distraction letting Brie send Cameron to the corner. Neckbreaker can't get Cameron to Naomi. The twins use some sort of tag double leglock rolling move to put away Cameron.
WINNERS: The Bella Twins in 4:15. At the end of their last run in WWE, the Bella Twins had evolved into a pair of decent wrestlers and this match showed that. I wish there was a bit more time to this match or rhyme or reason for it, but there wasn't much to complain about.
Backstage, Tony Dawson interview Kassius Ohno. Ohno says that Dawson will need to speak up since Regal injured his ear. Ohno's wearing a shirt commemorating Regals "a real man's man" vignettes. He claims not to be obsessed with Regal but has memorized his career, and after this match he'll be gone for good.
Ad: In two weeks, it's Kaitlyn vs. A.J. Lee for the Divas Championship, Adrian Neville vs. Antonio Cesaro for the U.S. Championship, Brad Maddox vs. Big E. Langston for the NXT Championship, and Bo Dallas against Wade Barrett for the Intercontinental Championship.
Lengthy WrestleMania Axxess video.
Renee Young interview William Regal. She says he was initially upset about getting physical with Ohno, and wants to know why they are now having a match. Regal says that he is happy being an announcer, but Ohno has unlocked the doors to darkness in Regal's mind. Regal sends a message to Ohno implying some very bad intentions.
[Q3] Post-commercial ad says that next week's match between Rollins and Graves will be a lumberjack match.
Kassius Ohno hits the ring with plenty of time to spare. The ring announcer looks like she is trying to not laugh, which she's done a few times tonight. William Regal comes out to a strong reaction. Regal shakes his finger at Ohno to warn of the impending beating, then they head to commercial before the bell.
After the commercial, a video giving some background about Corey Graves, setting him up as an anti-hero.
3 - WILLIAM REGAL vs. KASSIUS OHNO
Extended tests of strength with locks-ups and neither man wanted to give the other much room. Regal stays on Ohno to keep him on the mat. Regal then outwits Ohno with a leg takedown. Regal works Ohno's arm. Regal starts to look a bit confident after keeping control of Ohno. Regal with his kicks to Ohno while arguing with the ref routine. Ohno can't get any traction until the ref distracts Regal to give him some instructions. Ohno with a baseball slide to the back of Regal's head.
[ Commercial Break ]
Out of the break, Ohno is in the middle of a nearfall on Regal. Big boot after big boot in the corner to Regal. Full nelson from Ohno and Regal finds his way out and knocks Ohno silly. Regal gets more vicious using the ropes to practically rip Ohno's fingers off. The ref needs to stop Regal from dislocating Ohno's fingers in the middle of the ring. Regal back to the fingers. Ohno with a huge kick to Regal's face, buying him some time to apparently put his fingers back in place.
Ohno kicks Regal's head into the ringpost. Ohno wants a front chancery on the apron, but his gingers are too mangled to lock. He drags Regal into the ring, and Regal is acting like he is completely disoriented. Ohno stomps his head hard as Maddox asks if the match should be stopped. Ohno still can't lock in the Kassius Klutch. Regal gets separation, but can barely stand straight. Exploder suplex and then the Regal Stretch, but Ohno elbows out before it's locked in.
[Q4] Regal is on his knees, can barely see Ohno but is still defiant. Regal gets up, but a big boot sends him right back down for a nearfall. Ohno wants the rolling elbow, but Regal counters with one of his own, then the knee trembler and collapses onto Ohno for the win.
WINNER: William Regal in 14:00. I missed WrestleMania due to work (and still have not been able to watch it on DVR), but I will say that the last time I saw a match that affected me like this, it involved Shawn Michaels, Undertaker, or C.M. Punk. Maybe a match like this has little place in the contemporary WWE, with its multiple minutes of chain wrestling, no big-name established stars, lack of high-flying or spots for chanting fans. What we saw was nearly a quarter-hour of two men with a well-established beef trying to inflict as much pain as possible in an effort to completely incapacitate one another, with no possibility of remorse or misgivings. The story told in the ring: Ohno progressively destroying Regal's sense of balance with blows to the head, and Regal keeping Ohno from using his submission hold finisher by working the fingers was perfectly told. I fully expected Ohno to win here, but with a Regal victory, what next? A continuation, or does this settle it? If that was Regal's last match, it could not have been a finer send-off.
Post-match, Regal can't even stand up. His eyes are rolling around a big and he looks totally out of it. Even after replays, Regal is still barely mobile.
Final Reax: This episode existing for only one reason: to provide 20 minutes of content to wrap around the indescribably good match between William Regal and Kassius Ohno. If you enjoy matches other than the typical WWE fare, this is a can't-miss show.
