[Q1] Let's see if NXT is as bad as last week, or if it can recover. Or perhaps it will be nothing but Raw recaps and WrestleMania hype? We know that Big E. Langston is scheduled to defend his NXT Title against Conor O'Brien; Langston has cooled off as a champ and O'Brien has little heat behind him.
Pre-credits, a very short video promoting the championship match.
Tony Dawson, Kassius Ohno, and Brad Maddox are in the booth. So, Ohno is rewarded for disabling an announcer by being made one?
Bo Dallas kicks the show off with a tag team match. He's joining Adrian Neville. Dawson tells us that Grey is out for six months. They are facing the Wyatt Family. Bray Wyatt congratulates the mouse for surviving a night in a cage with the snake, but reminds us that the snake eventually eats the mouse.
1 - BO DALLAS & ADRIAN NEVILLE vs. LUKE HARPER & ERIC ROWAN - Tag Team match
Dallas and Harper lock up and Dallas takes the worst of it. Ohno does a good job at emphasizing the emotional aspect of Grey's injury. Harper is finally able to tag in Neville, who is able to quickly take Harper down. Impressive standing star press. Things break down and Wyatt gets involved, but it doesn't put Neville away.
[ Commercial Break ]
Neville is still isolated out of the break. Ohno claims that the Family's plan of attack is to "not shower." Dallas finaly gets a tag and he cleans house on Harper. Rowan breaks up a pin. Wyatt wants to get involved but Neville clears him from the apron, then a big leap over the ropes takes Wyatt and Rowan out of the game. Dallas ducks a clothesline and lands a belly-t-belly suplex for the win.
WINNERS: Dallas & Neville in 8:45. The mid-match isolation of Neville went on a touch long, but it was nice to not see Dallas in that role for a change. Neville and Harper were the highlights of the match, as expected. I wonder how long they can drag this out for with Grey out of action for six months though? Maybe the returning Evan Bourne will team up with Neville? That would be an exciting pairing.
Pre-commercial, Conor O'Brien has one of his mood-lit backstage promos vowing to get the title. I am stunned at how quickly O'Brien's gimmick went from "pretty cool" to "really lame" just by losing his tag partner.
[Q2] WrestleMania video promoting Cena-Rock II.
Out of the video, Regal ambushes Ohno with an absolutely brutal assault and looks like he is trying to tear Ohno's eyes out. The villain is back. That crowd went nuts.
[ JJ Reax: What stands out here, is that before the feud with Regal, Ohno struggled to get heat in the Full Sail setting due to his status as an independent circuit fan favorite. Regal has been so effectively used here, and despite this feud going on at least two months with no true in-ring contact, the tension is at a fever pitch, and they seem to be able to continue to heighten it week after week with techniques that typically would fall flat. ]
Video for Undertaker-Punk.
After the video, Dawson tries to recap the attack while Maddox goes nuts. Summer Rae does her Michelle McCool impression on her way to the ring. She's teaming up with Audrey Marie. They are facing Sasha Banks and Paige.
2 - PAIGE & SASHA BANKS vs. SUMMER RAE & AUDREY MARIE - Tag Team match
Paige and Marie start, but Paige is frustrated that Rae won't come in. Paige brings Marie to the corner to let Banks get a piece of her. Banks's speed is countered by Marie's size and Banks gets isolated. Rae sends a message to Paige with Banks as the victim. Rae shows off a hard-hitting offense.
Banks is able to reverse and pin then roll across the ring to tag Paige. Rae tags Marie before they make contact and hightails it out of the ring and up the ramp. Paige takes out her frustration on Marie. Kick to the belly then the Paige turner for the win. Paige immediately runs up the ramp to chase Rae.
WINNER: Paige and Sasha Banks in 4:15. I liked what I saw of this match, and it did a good job and continuing to build the involved feuds.
After a commercial break, WWE announces William Regal against Kassius Ohno next week. I would have liked to see that announced on-camera by someone.
O'Brian has nearly no heat, and Langton's reaction isn't nearly what it used to be. He really loses a lot of his allure when he speaks.
[Q3]
3 - NXT champion BIG E. LANGSTON vs. CONOR O'BRIAN - NXT Title match
They trade early offense, then O'Brian gets sent to the outside by a shoulder tackle.
[ Commercial Break ]
Langston is in the middle of five big punches from the break. O'Brian hot shots Langston on the ropes to turn it around. Dawson: "What would it mean for O'Brian to win here?" Maddox: "It would mean that he's the NXT Champion!" Maddox freaks out because O'Brien is taking too much time between punches. Langston makes a sudden comeback with a clothesline off the mat, but a big boot from O'Brien cuts it off.
O'Brian flops around in frustration at a nearfall. O'Brian taunts the fans imitating Langston instead of finishing Langston. O'Brian tries The Big Finish, but Langston is too heavy for him and slips out. Langston hits the ropes hard and steamrolls O'Brian. Langston drops the straps nd hits The Big Ending for the win.
WINNER: Big E. Langston in 7:30. The match had enough back and forth to keep it interesting, and it put a lot more crowd support behind Langston. He had a much better reaction on the win than he did pre-match.
Post-match, he hits the Big Ending again and gives himself a five count.
Final Reax: Enjoyable episode of NXT, with continued progress on a number of fronts. Nice recovery from last week's mess. It's nice to see O'Brian out of the title picture so it can focus on Corey Graves.
