TRUE: GAIL KIM IS ONE OF A KIND
After seeing Gail Kim return to Impact Wrestling, it's clear she is one of a kind. No other wrestler (male of female) has clearly shown they are more valuable in TNA than the WWE. The list is long: Christian, Jeff Hardy, Jeff Jarrett, D-Lo, Mr. Anderson, Tara, Matt Hardy, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff, Mick Foley, Mickie James, Taz, Kurt Angle, and Winter.
Bully Ray is starting to make the case he can join Gail in this exclusive company and a case might be made for Christian and Angle, but neither men have meant anything in the ratings for TNA despite positions at the top or near the top of the card. Kharma gets an incomplete and Matt Morgan is more valuable, but was essentially a developmental guy on TV due to his size in WWE.
Gail showed a crisp and innovative move set in her return, as TNA seemingly unshackled her as a worker in a way that WWE never did. While moving her into a heel role seems counter-intuitive, it also makes her fresh and provides her with an interesting and new character contrasting what fans might have perceived as flat and one dimensional had she returned as a babyface.
Time will tell if Gail can still move the ratings needle the way she did with Awesome Kong, when their matches routinely bumped the numbers 10-25 percent for their segments. However, it was immediately clear that Gail Kim's unique talents are best suited for Impact Wrestling, unlike nearly any of her peers.
FALSE: THERE IS STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
As WWE moves into a major angle with John Cena and The Rock, the success or failure could well rest on whether or not Cena is in jeopardy. Does Cena need Rock's help?
If Cena needed Rock's help, it would make more sense that Rock would give in to his fan's demand that Rock team with Cena. The more heat on Miz and Truth would make Rock a bigger hero for saving the day and increase the demand for Rock to pair with Cena. If the heel Miz and Truth were constantly getting the advantage on Cena by double-teaming him, Rock would be the great counterbalance.
However, last week on Raw Cena managed to handle both Miz and the costumed Truth with a shrug and a smirk, giving the heels little credibility and never pointing to Cena really needing anyone's help. It seemed like he needed a partner to fill out the dance card of a tag team match more than he needed it to physically handle both Miz and Truth. The "big reveal" that he would ask Rock had no spark, no surprise, and it wasn't Cena's way to frustrate the playing field against two heels. Cena has already shown that Cena > Miz + Truth, so adding Rock means little.
Rock's paint-by-the-numbers response of "Hell No," but "Of course I will" was uninspired, but mostly due to the story being so uninspiring. Who is he saving? What have Truth and Miz done that is so daring, bold, and effective to warrant Rock's return, and his return with a partner he doesn't like?
It doesn't take Miz or Truth to be superior to Cena for this story to work, but it certainly takes Miz and Truth to dominate Cena to make Rock's return mean something. What we've been left with is a return that feels as unnescessary as the Vengence PPV did.
However, if Rock's return unfolds to reveal that Cena was luring him in to turn on him along side Miz and Truth, then the story begins to take hold. Layered storylines like this have been missing in recent years, so I don't expect it. It would finally prove in the WWE that there are strength in numbers, so long as the numbers include John Cena.
TBD: CENA WILL TURN HEEL AT SURVIVOR SERIES
Possible hints like a black t-shirt, mystery texts, Kevin Nash tweets, and incomplete stories twists may all be pointing to a John Cena turn at Survivor Series. Or are they?
There are a lot of risks to turning your top babyface, but the rewards are finally starting to seem on par with the risks. Conventional wisdom would say you should have your next top babyface in place before you turn your current one. This would imply WWE is not ready, but how do you ever replace John Cena? You don't, nor do you have to. WWE has top babyface acts like Punk, Orton, Triple H and even Sheamus who could help fill the void. Also, turning a star of Cena's magnitude would invigorate the entire babyface roster out of the opportunity to fill Cena's void. The fresh mega-star heel Cena would help help elevate anyone feuding with him.
The Cena turn is going to be huge whenever it happens. The younger and female demos who currently support Cena are more easily manipulated and they'll be crushed when he abandons them. It will be interesting to see if a heel turn doesn't engender Cena to the current fans who hate him. In theory he could remain a top merchandise seller, only now selling to adult males who love seeing a Cena who has ditched the Hustle Loyalty Respect act to be become a disrespectful hustler, loyal to no one. It wasn't as if the heel NWO act didn't sell merchandise.
There are a lot of pieces in place making a logical, pronounced, and shocking turn of the WWE's top babyface act. The downsides of losing a top ratings draw and merchandise seller seem to be at least balanced with what could be a hot story ratings boosts, and perhaps a merchandise boost from a different set of customers.
In a way this has the makings of a one-man double turn (if that's possible). For the woman and children who love Cena, he becomes a hated villain who abandoned them. Older males, who hate Super Cena's good guy act, could delight in his turn and enjoy seeing him fail, sell, and show a darker side.
Will we here the the first Cena battle chant with men over 12 screaming "Let's Go Cena" while the women and children answer "Cena Sucks" following Survivor Series? It remains to be determined.
