RADICAN”S REVIEW SERIES
“BEST FRIENDS w/ BIFF BUSICK”
RELEASED IN 2015 BY HIGHSPOTS
BY SEAN RADICAN, TORCH COLUMNIST

Best Friends is a new series of interviews from Highspots hosted by Trent Baretta and Chuck Taylor. This edition futures Biff Busick, who has really started to break out on the independent scene and is featured heavily in EVOLVE, although he has also done tremendous work in Beyond Wrestling in the past. Busick also regularly began wrestling in PWG in 2014 as well.

Right off the bat, it’s clear that this is a very informal interview. It’s even more informal than The Kevin Steen Show was on Highspots, which stopped production when Steen signed with WWE in 2014. Trent and Chuck introduce themselves as Greg and Dustin, which are their real names. Busick, Baretta, and Taylor all drink beer throughout the show.

Baretta and Taylor introduce the show and go right into ridiculous questions right away. One of the best parts of the early sections of the interview is when they ask Busick for a Jerry Lynn story and he doesn’t have one because he hasn’t met him. Chuck and Trent’s reaction is priceless. The graphic they show for Lynn on screen is tremendous, as they bring a picture of a nuclear bomb going off with a still photo of Lynn. The pictures are then combined as Taylor and Baretta talk about Lynn’s cradle piledriver.

The show is shot in what appears to be an apartment. Caleb Konley is sitting in the background during the early portions of the show. Ricochet makes an appearance as well to discuss his bathroom etiquette. The Bravado Brothers also make a cameo shortly after the lengthy discussion on how to properly manage yourself in the bathroom. Details aren’t necessary, but this discussion is outrageous. There’s also a small dog name Charlie that Trent constantly tries to hold throughout the show.

They talk about the WWN tour in China last November and tell some funny stories, although some of the terminology is very insider and only Trent, Chuck, and Biff seem to understand what they’re talking about. There is a fantastic Larry Dallas story involving the street meat in China, which they were all warned not to eat in an email they got before going on the tour.

The show bounces around from topic to topic and there’s not a lot of insight into Busick’s career, but I found myself laughing a lot at the conversation. Busick gives his opinion on shaving bodies and Busick says he doesn’t like it. Busick says he knows wrestlers are supposed to tan and change their bodies. Chuck says he doesn’t like tanning. Trent then talks about burning his private area in the tanning bed. Busick says he knows he looks gross, but he doesn’t care.

Busick, Taylor, and Baretta talk about wrestling girls and tell a story about Ernie Osiris getting an erection while wrestling Sara Del Rey in ROH. Taylor says what happened to Osiris has never happened to him, but he’s fought a lot of women. At one point, Taylor calls Trent a horrible interviewer. Trent says this isn’t an interview, it’s just dudes hanging out, which is an accurate description of what this release is.

There are a couple of segments revolving around taking photos. Baretta, Taylor, and Trent have a discussion about going to the promo in high school and Busick asks Trent and Chuck to recreate a promo photo, which is priceless.

Trent and Chuck (or is it Dustin and Greg?) later tease a show-closing segment where they take their shirts off with their guest and tweet a picture to the Rock. They deliver an incredibly funny picture at the end with Busick, Taylor, and Baretta doing the Forth Gunn pose and send it to The Rock. The Rock would often respond to Kevin Steen on Twitter, but I doubt he’s touching that Tweet.

One thing that I hadn’t noticed before watching this interview was that Busick has very dark eyes. Taylor refers to them as black demon eyes. Biff looks deep into Greg’s eyes and he gets freaked out. Taylor says that should be a new segment on the show where the guest kisses Trent.

Trent doesn’t seem to mind putting himself out there during the interview with the exception of getting upset when Taylor tells a story about Trent getting intimate with himself in a bed next to Taylor while they were in China. Later on in the interview, Trent says he has tax issues and is bad at real life. Trent goes on to say he forgets to put his car in park often. “Put in park you f—k” is Taylors response to Trent. Busick says Trent should have Seinfeld entrance music anytime he does something.

Another funny bit is when Taylor and Busick make fun of Trent doing his entrance and Taylor does an imitation of him coming out by coming through the door in the apartment where this was taped. Chuck asks Trent, “Why do you come out like a weird lobster.” Taylor does an over the top version of Trent’s entrance while Busick introduces him while doing his best impersonation of The Fink.

Overall thoughts: (7.0) - Having not heard a lot about the new “Best Friends” interview series before watching this release, I was expecting an interview that would cover Busick’s career. They did discuss some of Busick’s career, but this was mostly just about Taylor, Baretta, and Busick drinking beers and having a good time.

I laughed out loud several times watching this release. The highlights were Taylor doing an imitation of Trent’s entrance and Taylor and Baretta doing a promo picture pose together. Busick told a lot of funny stories as well about growing up and doing things like playing baseball with his car and getting into an accident and another story that stood out was a fight he got into when he was in 7th grade and won a fight with a karate kick to the ribs.

If you’re going into this release looking for a lot of wrestling insight, you’re not going to get much of that here, but Taylor and Baretta were genuinely funny hosts and this release was fun to watch.
