Winner: A.R. Fox

Star rating: (***3/4) – This was a heck of a back and forth contest between Cage and Fox. The announcers did a good job filling in the background of both men and what they have in common during the match. Cage looked really good here going toe-to-toe with Fox at a breathtaking pace. This was a lot of fun to watch if you like fast paced action. It is good to see Cage in EVOLVE, as he has been a standout on the independents for a couple of years now.

Busick helped Gulak to his feet and shook his hand after Hero left. The fans then applauded for Gulak.

Winner: Chris Hero

Star rating: (****1/4) – Great three part match with both men going hold for hold during the early going. Then they moved to Gulak working over Hero’s leg to neutralize Hero’s striking. The pace picked up late in the match with both guys showing great intensity with some brutal chop and slap exchanges and counter sequences. The tombstone finish came out of nowhere and looked brutal. This is a match worth going out of your way to check out.

Caleb Konley came out to very little reaction. P.J. Black was out next for his EVOLVE debut and he got a good reaction from the crowd.

(5) Caleb Konley (w/Anthony Nese) vs. P.J. Black. A.R. Fox came into the commentary both. Fox said he had his eyes on Black. He said he doesn’t know what a dare wolf Is, but he knows what a Fox is. Winner: P.J. Black

Star rating: (***1/4) – This was a fun match while it lasted. Both guys went back and forth the entire match and there wasn’t a lot of selling, but Black looked good and his springboard 450 was sick. Fox was hilarious on commentary. I hope they use him again.

Davey Richards came out to a good reaction from the crowd. He got booed during the formal ring introductions. Davey Richards got a good pop when he was introduced.

(6) Anthony Nese (w/Caleb Konley) vs. Davey Richards. The announcers said they believed this was a first time match. The announcers mentioned that Richards had spit on the EVOLVE title the last time he was here in 2014 after his match against Fox. Neither man could get the upper hand during the early going. Winner: Davey Richards

Star rating: (****) – This was an awesome all-out war between Richards and Nese. They had some big exchanges late in the match that really got the crowd going. I really felt like I was watching a fight at times and Nese looked really good here against Richards. It was great to see Davey back in EVOLVE.

Galloway vs. Strong is up next in a Steel Cage match. The cage doesn’t look too stable surrounding the ring, as there are gaps between the fencing in the corners.

Roderick Strong came out first and got on the mic. He said when this all started, he was trying to give an opportunity. The mic broke up again while Strong was trying to talk. Strong said he was just going to yell because the mic sucks. The crowd chanted that the mic sucks. He said after what happened in Tampa, Galloway had called him the biggest pussy in Tampa. Strong said he accepted the match inside the cage to show him that he’s a bad motherf----er. Strong said maybe he didn’t want the match at all and said it was an unsafe work environment. Strong headed the back, but Galloway jumped him. Galloway and Strong went back and forth on the outside. Galloway dropped Strong neck-first over the barricade. Galloway then nailed Strong from behind with the EVOLVE title. Galloway yelled at Strong and slapped him right across the face. Strong ran to the back and Galloway followed him. Galloway brought Galloway back to ringside and tossed him into the ring. He finally entered the ring and the ref called for the bell.

(7) EVOLVE Champion Drew Galloway vs. Roderick Strong in a Non-title Steel Cage match. Strong continued to hit running sick kicks over and over on Galloway. The ref checked on Galloway and called for the bell.

Winner: Roderick Strong via ref stoppage.

Star rating: (***3/4) – This was a very good Steel Cage match. They had a good brawling sequence before the match started and although the cage didn’t look for sturdy, it fit the vibe of the venue. They had some good back and forth sequence throughout the match putting the cage to use to do damage to each other. Strong getting the upper hand down the stretch and trapping Galloway between the cage and the apron while hitting him over and over with running sick kicks was a brutal way to finish the match. I wasn’t a big fan of Galloway doing a blade job here, as I don’t think it added much to the match at all and in general I’m not a fan of blood in wrestling.

The fans booed Strong when he was announced as the winner. Strong dragged Galloway back into the ring and applied the Stronghold after the match was over. Black came down to the ring and Strong backed away. He then left the ring. Black asked for the EVOLVE title and got on the mic. He said he knew there was a ranking system. He asked Galloway for a match for the EVOLVE Title. I couldn’t make out what Black was saying because the mic kept breaking up. He told Galloway to do the right. He told Galloway he wanted a title match in San Jose. Galloway finally recovered and said he hopes the mic doesn’t cut out. It was hard to hear what he said, but he seemed to agree to defend it against Black during WM weekend.

The fans chanted for Galloway after Black left the ring. He tried to talk, but the mic kept cutting out. He said thanks to people like Gabe, Sal, and others believing in him, he had had a great 7 months. Galloway said in TNA, he was Drew Galloway. He said he would be Drew Galloway everywhere he went and thanked the people for standing behind him. The fans chanted thank you Drew. Galloway thanked the fans for believing in him. He said in Brooklyn he wrestled Strong for the first time and called him one of the most talented men in wrestling. He said he had his number that night and people paid attention to him after that night. He talked about the feud and said Strong had beat him until he was unconscious. He said the EVOLVE title wasn’t the most important thing to him anymore. He said he wanted to beat Strong. Galloway said the feud started in New York and it would end in New York.

Galloway said there should be one title in EVOLVE. Galloway said he believed in EVOLVE and in the ranking system. Galloway gave up on talking on the mic and said he believed there should be one champion. He said Gargano isn’t here tonight. He said he had a plan. He said he knows Gargano feels the same way he does. He said if he beats Nation and Black in San Jose, he wants to face Gargano in a EVOLVE Championship vs. DGUSA Championship Unification Title match at the WWN Supershow. The fans applauded. Galloway thanked the fans and said he loves professional wrestling. The mic cut out again and said he wanted Strong for a final encounter. Galloway tossed the mic and threw a crotch chop at it. He then yelled that he wanted Strong in New York City. The announcers hit the talking points of Galloway’s promo as he left the ring.

Overall thoughts: (8.0) – This was a really good show that was hampered by production issues. The undercard featured a number of good matches highlighted by the awesome match between Chris Hero and Drew Gulak. Nearly everything on the card delivered in spades and from an in-ring standpoint this show, which was announced on short notice, couldn’t have gone much better. Matt Cage and P.J. Black stood out in their debut matches and the wrestler really put forth a fantastic effort in the ring.

I’m not a fan of the NYWC Sportatorium as a wrestling venue at all. When I watch wrestling, I want to be able to see the fans reacting to the matches, but the building was dark and it was impossible to see what sounded like a hot crowd and the way the ring and the ringside area are lit made it hard to see what was going on at times when wrestlers went to certain areas to brawl on the floor. The mic cutting out also made it hard to hear the various promos that were cut to set up matches during WM weekend and beyond throughout the show, especially at the end during Galloway’s promo.

Matt Cage looked really good in his debut match against Fox. He’s been a standout on some of the lower level independents for years and it was great to see him finally get a shot on a bigger stage. He looked really good during his match against Fox and the fans took to him right away. Hopefully Cage is brought back more often.

Black also looked good having a fun back and forth match against Caleb Konley. Fox came in on commentary to scout Black for their WM weekend match and was hilarious while calling the match. I hope he’s used more often on commentary in the future.

Gulak-Hero told a really good three part story. They started with some good technical wrestling. Then the match progressed and Gulak got the upper hand and began working over Hero’s leg to neutralize his striking. Things really picked up down the stretch with both men going back and forth exchanging strikes and mixing in some nice counter sequences. The tombstone finish came out of nowhere and was surprising, but I thought it was an effective way to end the story they were telling with Hero needing to find a way out of the match due to Gulak constantly being able to counter his signature rolling elbow strikes.

Richards was a really good edition to this card and he put on a great back and forth match with Anthony Nese. They had some good hard-hitting exchanges and the crowd was really into the match. The pace picked up down the stretch before Richards put Nese away with the stretch muffler. This is another match on the card well-worth going out of your way to see.

The main event Steel Cage match was very good, but seemed like it was missing something to take it to the next level. They had a good brawling sequence at the start and both men went all-out in the ring going back and forth utilizing the steel cage to punish each other. The finish came off really well with Strong finishing off Galloway with a series of sick kicks to the head while he was trapped between the cage and the apron. I’m not a fan of blood in matches and Galloway bleeding certainly didn’t add a lot to this match. I’m glad they are going to have one more match to blow off the feud, as this didn’t feel like a fitting end to their story.

Despite the production issues, this show is well-worth checking out. EVOLVE continues to present a number of diverse matches and this show delivered a couple of must see matches in Gulak-Hero and Richards-Nese to go along with a number of other good matches up and down the card.
