After watching “The Reunion” it’s abundantly evident WWE needs to blow up WWE Studios and start over. The writing for this movie was bad and cliché-filled. It’s not a good thing when all of the characters in the movie come across as totally unlikable.

Cena plays Sam the suspended cop who is forced to get along with his brothers in order to get the inheritance left by their father. Did I mention that neither him nor his siblings, who all have different mothers, liked their father very much either?

I’d explain the family dynamic, but it’s such a convoluted headache that’s it’s simply not worth it other than to mention that Boyd Holbrook (Douglas) plays one brother who is bail bondsman and Ethan Embry (Leo) plays the juvenile kid brother that none of his siblings ever knew and he just shows up and joins in on the fun. Amy Smart (Nina) is in charge of the money and insists they won’t get their inheritance until they prove they can all get along by running a business together.

Sam, Boyd, and Douglas all head to Mexico as bondsman after Douglas sees one of his clients is wanted in relation to a kidnapping of a billionaire that has been taken to Mexico.

Suddenly, Cena and his brothers become cowboys running away from a drug lord and chasing after the kidnapper with the help of a friendly local woman, who just happens to be part Indian and knows the landscape of the canyons well.

Cena has no charisma in his role and despite being surrounded by known actors; the script does nothing but make you wish the movie would just end. The cliché-filled plot runs amok to a grand finale that sees Cena in his cowboy gear jump off a cliff and land on a helicopter.

Cena, who looks huge in this movie compared to everyone else, looks ridiculous once he dons the cowboy gear and the specter of him jumping off a cliff near the climax is more hilarious than dramatic.

Right up until the end Cena and his siblings bicker and it only makes the resolution of the movie even more confusing. The movie tries to be a comedy, drama, and a western, but fails at all three thanks to the wooden acting and bad script.

I can see Cena having success as an action star at some point in his acting career, but he needs to be surrounding by better writing, as everything he did in this movie felt void of emotion. WWE needs to find better writing and a way to highlight Cena’s strengths as an action star, instead of dropping him in a movie with a ridiculous plot that plays away from the things he can do well on the silver screen.

“The Reunion” is currently playing in limited release in select theatres.
