I wrote a tweet to Irv Muchnick recently about a blog he posted on WrestlingBabylon.Wordpress.com about Triple H hitting Undertaker with a chair shot to the head. Nowhere in his blog on April 4 did he mention that Undertaker took a protected chairshot where he absorbed the blow by putting up his hand. There's a distinction to be made there, but Muchnick is ignoring it.

I exchanged messaged with Muchnick about the matter and gave up because it seemed to be splitting hairs to me. With some time to reflect, I think it is important to note the difference between an unprotected chairshot and a protected chairshot when reporting on these matters. There is a difference between taking the blow full-force to the head from a chair and a wrestler getting his hand up to absorb the blow.

When reporting on the Triple H chairshot, that's an important distinction to make, as in my eyes the incident would have been much more appalling if Undertaker had simply offered up his head to take the entire force of the blow from the chair Triple H swung at him.

I feel that until we know how much subsequently WWE fined the Undertaker and triple H that's important not to rush the judgment despite WWE's history with chairshots in the post-Benoit era.

Here is what Irv wrote using David Bixenspan's column to support his claims: "A guy who signed his email “Chris” sent me this comment on the report here yesterday that World Wrestling Entertainment is again using chair shots to the head, despite public statements and a published “wellness policy” to the contrary:

'to be fair, mr. muchnick, if you saw the wm 28 [sic] ppv, you would have seen that the undertake [sic] put his hands up in front of his face and his hands absorbed that fake chair shot from hhh.'

The best answer to this is the excellent item by David Bixenspan at Cageside Seats: 'After Wrestlemania, it looks like WWE has unbanned chairs to the head,' http://www.cagesideseats.com/2011/4/4/2090779/after-wrestlemania-it-looks-like-wwe-had-unbanned-chairs-to-the-head.

'Undertaker may have gotten a hand up at the last second, but as hard as the shot hit, that probably didn’t help matters much at all,' Bixenspan writes."

The fact is when building a case against WWE, the distinction of whether or not Undertaker got his hand up is important. You can't reply on "may" and "probably" as Bixenspan does to make a case against the WWE. Undertaker did get his hand up and there is a difference between protecting a chairshot and not protecting a chairshot. It can't be dismissed as "benighted over analysis" as Muchnick said when he tweeted me today.

Mr. Muchnick needs to realize that the facts are the facts whether or not he likes it when it comes to building a case against the WWE. Using the term "benighted over analysis" is actually ironic on the part of Muchnick in this case.

I do hope Triple H and Undertaker were fined a significant amount of money. I hope they were fined enough money to send a message to the entire locker room that all chairshots won't be tolerated in the future. In order to shed light on WWE's practices, however, it's important to get all of the facts straight when presenting a case.
